It was in the newspaper the next day that they accused him of saying it, so it’s not like they didn’t say anything at the time because they did.
"Gator Bait" cheer cancelled.

This one brings an interesting "twist".
Ok, reading what Gator Bait meant a 100 years ago is a sickening racist thing.
I am 99% sure that the people that first starting saying it for Florida Gators had no idea, its just that "Gator Bait" sounded better than "Gator Food". I am 99% sure that the school and fans had no idea about the history as well and they OBVIOUSLY didn't mean African American babies, they meant their opponents.
So, with that given. We are taking words with what people currently mean by them and making it "racist" even if the word didn't originally mean that way. Antebellum is a word that literally means "before the war" with no specific war as part of the definition. However, "now" some people use it to glorify the south before the Civil War, so we have to stop using that word...
If we are going to get rid of antebellum because some people have changed the meaning of the word, then why would we get rid of Gator Bait? It is quite obvious that the phrase had been changed in meaning. The team is the gators, and the opponent was "fed" to them. It has nothing to do with race. So they, even inadvertently, changed the meaning of "Gator Bait" then why can't we decide to still use it as the modern meaning has no racist undertones?
I mean is the standard what the word means now, like with antebellum, or what it meant originally, like with gator bait?
Or is the standard that the word/phrase has EVER had any racist undertones then we have to phase it out? If so then our English language is REALLY going to get a "haircut".

The better question is what happens when there's no more Gator Bait, Aunt Jemima, statues or other superficial means of appeasement left? Not to say some of those things shouldn't go, but I don't think it's going to affect any real change in society. "Hey, what are we going to do?....I don't know, let's get rid of a couple of cheers and hope that's enough"

Another Oklahoma State quarterback, Mason Rudolph, used the n-word last season. He received no penalty and still has not apologized.

Only according to NFL Jussie.

Lol in Columbus Ohio.

2. You are being obtuse and it isn't funny. If you don't believe that a mentally unstable person who is on drugs can turn violent then you don't understand and have never had to deal with it. Once it is violent, what in the hell is a social worker going to be able to do?
3. There was nearly a taser used, the officer had it out and warned if they didn't comply that the taser would be used to force them to comply. So yes, the armed police is the only reason they ended up at the hospital where they needed to be.
I’m not being obtuse. First, if the police are defunded and the funds go elsewhere, are the social workers just not going to be trained? Can they not learn how to shoot a taser?
The gun wasn’t used, so my point stands. If it was used, to family member would’ve been shot, which solves zero issues here. The gun not being present would solve that issue though.
My best friend is a sergeant in Toledo. You know how they are trained to handle coked out people, mentally disturbed people, and drunks? The same fucking way they are trained to handle a violent spouse at a domestic dispute call. That they are violent, dangerous and potentially lethal to you. He’s said it’s preposterous, and I agree. They aren’t trained deescalation at all (only in a passing lecture to get the state funds). They aren’t trained in how to handle someone who is violent, but unarmed. They just aren’t, and they (or whoever handles the calls moving forward) needs to be.

You must not know any social workers. They’re majority small women that rely on cops when they have to take kids out of a house. Different worlds. Community “policing” is a stupid idea.

Keeping things as they are is also a stupid idea imo

Why? How would you change it? The majority of people are in support of their local police.

1. Saying “did they shoot your family member” was being obtuse.
2. So you believe the social workers will all the sudden be trained in hand to hand combat do deal with a violent situation? I am obviously extremely happy that a gun wasn’t needed at the time but the belief that such violent situations would never require lethal force is rather naive.
3. As someone else said, just the gender and physical make up of most social workers alone makes this idea preposterous.

Yea you’re right it’s cool. Hey we investigated ourselves and we found that we did nothing wrong. Rinse repeat.

9 unarmed blacks died last year. 18 whites. That’s like 0 with the amount of interactions cops have had. The pandemic the media portrays just isn’t true. Do cops need no unions and reform inside, yup! But going away and giving fake power to dummies ain’t gonna do it.

If that is how you see things I don’t have the energy to try and change your mind. While those deaths I think are a catalyst it’s about way more than that in my mind.
Why do these social workers have to remain the same people? Why do these social workers have to be the ones responding to the calls? Lol.
It’s possible to start a new department. To have better training specific to these situations. To allow the police to respond to the true threats to society. I’m old enough to remember when TSA wasn’t a fucking thing. Guess what? We decided to fund a new federal department...it can happen again, if people are willing to let it. Fuck, half the police I know want this to happen, they hate responding to these situations. Not what they signed up for.

Why do we require social workers to get a college degree but not police who can actually kill you? You should at least have to have a college degree or 4 years of military service to be a police

I was talking to my wife today about this same thing.
I don't know that military service is a great guage of making a good cop. I don't necessarily want people with a soldier's mentality roaming the streets enforcing laws.
1. Reduce the number of laws, thus reducing the number of interactions between the police and everyone else.
2. That's it.
I forgot about this story until I saw this earlier today. Fuckin' joke.
