But don't you think defunding the gangs would probably be a much more effective approach?

I think legalizing drugs would be the most effective way to get rid of gangs and gun violence. So I’m fully on board with defunding gangs. It would also help if Betsy Davos would stop defunding schools!

No one is arguing that police don’t need reformed. Unions are a liberal idea... same as in schools it keeps the shitty ones employed for no reason. Get rid of them, everywhere.

The police are arguing that they don’t need reformed actually

Really think making drugs legal will defund gangs?

Expand on this...I'm ignorant to the facts.

I know that federal funding is something around 8% of all education funding. And I also know that per student spending, in general, has done nothing but increase over the past few decades.

They are moving to get rid of public schools by channeling more money to private schools and for profit schools. Most of the largest public schools are in democratic cities. They also aim to remove protections for special education students. Cutting funding for before and after school programs. Ect..

Got it. I'm 100% on board with school choice, and would vote to eliminate the federal DoE if I could, but I guess that's a topic for a different thread.

I don't.  And, incidentally, I support decriminalization not legalization.

But we've now seen a number of developments with marijuana.  First, it has not ended the black market for it.  That's just never going to happen so long as you have taxes and regulation.  Second, the Mexico cartels have started exporting a much more potent "tar".

More directly, has marijuana legalization throughout the US made even a dent in gangs?  And, besides, they'll still traffic in guns, sex and other things.  I think it's a decent assumption that if you eliminate one revenue source, they will find or move onto other sources (which could be more problematic).

Gangs don’t make their money from weed tho. I can’t argue with a lot of your points I don’t have an answer.. I think with gentrification looking at Columbus specifically given more time it will take care of itself. I see streets that used to be overrun with crime and gangs now with 300,000 dollar houses. Hell the short north used to be one of the most dangerous places in the world when I moved here in 98

I see it as the movement got hijacked from the founders. This is turning out to be one of the biggest movements in history and 99% of the people in the movement aren’t advocating for Marxism and don’t know what Marxism is and don’t know who the founders are.

So 99% of the people in the movement don't know what Marxism is - perhaps you are right and I would hope so, because no one in their right mind would allow themselves to be part of a movement that is led by Marxists.

I made a joke about you not knowing what it is. But if I’m being honest I don’t know or care what it is.

Maybe.  But a lot of marijuana does come from Mexico.

And I disagree that gentrification is ending gangs - I think it just displaces them to somewhere else.

I don't know what the solution is.  Gangs exist pretty much everywhere in the world where there are dense areas of poverty.  Dispersing these areas, which is basically breaking it all up into many smaller, hopefully less violent, crime spots isn't typically real popular with the communities receiving that transplant.

It's also interesting to note that Chicago was very successful in dismantling its two dominant gangs.  Perhaps not surprisingly that power void has led to an increase in violence.

Minnesota still has all of their police officers. So until u actually see what it looks like just relax. They haven’t even announced what it would be at this point.

So earlier you said “no one is calling for getting rid of police”

Now that you were showed you were wrong it’s “well let’s just wait and see what it’s like!”

Come on geeblock  you are smarter than this

They're not trying to get rid of public schools they are just looking to defund them and move the money to other more appropriate places where it will do more good especially since the school systems won't reform themselves.
