Brees also got knocked because he didn't get the issue. He kept confusing that kneeling was about the flag and not black lives. Once he realized that, he corrected himself, rightly.
Kaepernick literally was kneeling about the flag and the BS of "hands up don't shoot" and police murdering blacks. He probably clarified and broadened his position after people with a better understanding of the facts told him pushing false narratives aren't persuasive. It's kind of the same way the origins of BLM have been re-written to reflect a more accurate and equitable foundation.
Kaep mentioned more than once about "getting paid leave for murder" as being unjust. Apparently in Kaep's mind justice does not involve innocent until proven guilty.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
Another quote from that or a subsequent interview. Kaep was 100% protesting the flag and what he believes it represents, or doesn't represent. He said it multiple times in several different ways. It appears Brees may simply be guilty of knowing what Kaep actually said and did instead of accepting the meme it's become as fact.
"When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand. "
