... but then DeWine made masks optional and Hogan made them mandatory. Our cases went down, yours are up.

I think it's probably linked to bars opening too early.  20-30-somethings hit the bars and most seem to ignore social distancing and masks.  Also true, to lesser extent, with some restaurants.

They aren't all doing it, but the bars that aren't enforcing the rules and BAM! you have 150 new cases in a weekend from ONE bar.

It's hardly just Trump supporters not wearing masks.

Miami Beach - which is the global epicenter right now -  is apparently partying every night with complete disregard for social distancing and masks.  I doubt very many of them vote for Trump.

LA is almost as bad.  Good luck finding a Trump voter in that crowd.

Those are major cities where the virus is going to spread more easily, though.

I think in your average town where you have people refusing to wear masks, a lack of leadership is a huge issue. And no it’s not just Trump. People eventually turned on Dr. Acton, too, for instance.

I think I saw a blurb somewhere that Melbourne is battling a new outbreak and people were refusing to distance and wear masks.  So I think they actually issued a quarantine order.

Their number of new cases is in the hundreds, though, so like 2000% less than some of our bigger cities.

Well according to the CDC director, virus will be contained in 4-8 weeks if everyone wears a mask in public and social distances.

So let’s give that a shot and see if it’s accurate.

I don't know who is more annoying.  The people who perceive themselves to be morally superior heroes for wearing masks or the people who refuse to wear masks out of pettiness.

I can see why people are pissed about mask laws.  For the first month everyone was told masks don't do anything and now all of a sudden people are being threatened with fines for not wearing masks.

On the other hand, I always hated when people came to the office sick.  So, objecting to wearing the mask out of courtesy is just dumb.  It's the equivalent of not covering your mouth/nose after a cough/sneeze, because you don't have to.  Special bonus to people who still cry about masks when private businesses require masks.  To me that's the trade off.  No law mandating it, but you're simply going to have to deal with it when private businesses require it.   If you don't like it, then don't go there.

This!

Those, like a few on this thread, that act sanctimonious and calling anyone who doesn’t agree with them about wearing masks MORONS and IDIOTS are just as bad as the “muh rights!” People.

I wear my mask where required, don’t where it where not required but I still stay away/social distance from anyone out in public. I don’t go “muh rights!” but I also don’t call people idiots or selfish for not wearing a mask.

I just go about my day.

We were just talking about all the MORONS and IDIOTS who’ve been saying they won’t “where” the mask, and then you post this^^

Beautiful!

If calling out morons for going to anti-mask RALLIES is being morally superior I’m very ok with being called that.

Same. This affects all of us. I've been taking this seriously since mid-March, and for what? We ALL want normalcy back, and there's a way to get it. When people refuse to listen to experts and do what's right to protect their fellow citizens, they're selfish idiots. Call me morally superior all you want.

Did you call out morons for going to BLM protests? Scientifically there is no difference in how contagious a “no mask” rally and the BLM protests with 1000s and a good portion did not have masks.

Just because you agree with one protest and not the other doesn’t change the science of which one or both is a highly contagious event.

I didn’t see too many of the “sanctimonious” crowd on here calling those going to BLM protests “morons and idiots” due to the highly likely probability of them spreading the virus.

It is nearly scientifically certain that most or a good portion of the upticks and increase in cases are due to the recent protests after the Floyd murder. The delay and timing line up perfectly with the known incubation period.

Were all of you calling out those people as “morons and idiots”?

If not you are not being scientifically consistent, so you are just being sanctimonious.

Morally superior? ok...Nah, I just think we were on a good path on opening up and then people started acted stupid, not following guidance, opening up too early, not wearing masks, and now we could lose college football and school in the fall.

Wearing masks as a public health step is in line with other public health mandates we saw in this country throughout the 20th century that include: washing hands for employees at places, wide teaching of washing hands in schools, vaccines for babies, and for diseases like polio, and improvements in sanitation. All these were things that as a society we decided needed to be done by everyone for the public good to stop the spread of disease. Mask wearing is the latest in that line.

Also, science changes, you know that. Early on, we were worried about masks for hospital workers and front line folks. The guidance was more for people hoarding N95 masks. We didn't really understand  how much just even understand how much cloth masks really help slow the spread. Once we saw more data and study, it became clear that hey, masks do help slow the spread and thus the mandates started to come down.

Just to clarify I didn’t say you all were morally superior, I said you all perceive yourselves as morally superior.  Comes off as pretty insecure to me. You guys do you though. Let me know if you convince any of those people to wear masks.

Trying to be logical and use reason with SnL is about as fruitful as doing the same with QO and Spock.

It’s called an exaggeration. Just like when you say there is 99.9% compliance in Illinois.

I don’t think anyone is ignoring it, most people agree that the protests are a big reason why we’re currently seeing cases spike.

But please do not pretend that the anti maskers who go out without a mask on purpose (to prove their anti mask point) are comparable to a group of people going out to protest for their rights.

Ideologically they are different, but with respect to how contagious the two events are, it should be quite obvious of the two you mention, that protests are far more contagious than rando’s going out in public without a mask.

I didn’t see you calling the protestors morons for protesting during a pandemic.
