Big Red turns down ECOL invite

  • september63
Ummm........If I did not violate any rules. Why would the post need edited? As far as staying on topic, he said the gambling ppl would bet on Big Red. So I replied. Where does something like that need editing?
  • GoChiefs
It's already been explained as to why it was edited.

He mentioned gambling on HS sports. I said we dont do that here. Where is the off topic? calling gambling on HS sports degenerate?
  • GoChiefs
Don't give me that. The 'gambling' comment wasn't the issue. The part about being 'corrupt' was the issue. I guess you fail to remember the second part of your post? End of it.

I believe I meant to say degenerate. My bad on corrupt.

If Big Red got in the Big Ten, you'd all say, "this is a dumb move, Steubenville will kill everyone they play in the Big Ten!"
We don't know for sure that we will dominate, but we have history on our side. Over the past five years we have gone 68-4 with two state championships. Twice we played Dover, the ECOL champ, and we beat them both times. We have only lost one regular season game in the past seven years. During that time we had wins against Massillon, Poland, Ursuline, Woodland Hills, and some other very good teams.

Let's put it this way: If Big Red gets into the ECOL, the gamblers will bet on us to win every game.
Let me rephrase this. The gamblers? on HS Football?

^^^^^You can actually bet high school football in the Valley through local bookies, in fact, it's huge! Same thing up in Ytown.

Granted..they did only play one good team. But that wasn't of any fault of their own as most years...their schedule would have been a good one. But it just seemed like everyone they played last year was in a slump.
We played Zanesville from 91 thru 2005, and we know they will have some good teams from time to time. We went 12-3 against them.

I know that Las Vegas gamblers have bet on Big Red games. Every time I'm in Vegas, all I have to do is say I'm from Steubenville and I'm treated like a king.

thats funny, im not from steuby and as long as i'm spendin they treat me like a king also. go figure.

I got treated like a king without "spendin".

I have been there twice for a reunion and once to present a paper at a professional conference. I am not a gambler. I allot myself $50 for gambling. When that is gone, I stop. Yes, I go sightseeing and I see the shows. I also took my rollerblades with me. The Strip is a great place to skate. But the gambling casinos did not get rich from me.

You can not bet on high school football in Vegas, end of story! Fairwood is is refering to the fact that a ton of people from Steubenville have relocted to Vegas and work in the casino industry.......go figure, live in Vegas and work for a casino, who'd of thought.
  • bloozebrother
yeah.....go figure. if they would have bet on steuby they would have won a ton!

Big Red might dominate in football but they will not dominate the conference in every sport.

Maybe you're not supposed to bet on high school games in Vegas, but I know that when Big Red played Central, a lot of betting went on. I'm sure these were just friendly bets.

But you're right-- a lot of Steubenville people have moved to Vegas and Atlantic City. I think Jimmy the Greek had something to do with that.

We should do very well in wrestling, baseball, and girls' basketball. We may not dominate, but we will be competitive.

Thanks for agreeing with me by making it sound like I was trying to slight other sports.

Exactly, friendly bets. Jimmy the Greek may have influenced some people to move to Vegas or AC but it really stems from all of the illegal gambling that goes on in Steubenville, although, it's no where near what it used to be. Steubenville was a gambling hot bed back in the day.

Sorry. I didn't mean for it to come out that way.

Seen this on another site from a pretty good poster...again...like everything else...this is still just speculation and word of mouth.

"Steubenville in the ECOL is a virtual lock now. SCC is not. From what I'm told, it looks more and more like IV will come back, but it's not a done deal yet."

What division is Indian Valley in? And would Big Red ever want to play them?

I have been saying from the start that I believe Big Red will join the ECOL for the simple reason that the school never would have let this rumor get started if there were not some truth to it. If it was not going to happen, I think Reno would have said so in no uncertain terms.

I'm still against it. I like our schedules in football the way they are. Just over the past five years, we have played Massillon when they were regional champs, we played Inkster when they were state runner-up, we played St. Joe's in 2005 when they were otherwise undefeated and won the big-school poll state championship in New York, we snapped O'Hara's 26-game winning streak in 2007, we gave Canton CC their only two losses in 2007, we gave Wheeling Park their only regular season loss in 2008, we beat Woodland Hills when they were WPIAL champs, etc., etc. Most of the games like these will go away if we join the ECOL. I just can't see us playing Cambridge and Marietta every year.

Oh, well, that's just my opinion.

Good for SCC, IMO, we don't need to play in this league.

Indian Valley is D-IV in football and Big Red would never play them in football. Personally I feel that IV should join back with the ECOL and play in the "small school" division, although I have spoken to some that feel they are starting to build some success in the PAC at lower levels that they didn't see while playing in the ECOL. That said, I'm not sure how they could justify not playing in a league with Claymont, Dover, Phila, Cambridge, Meadowbrook, Coshocton, River View and even Big Red mainly just for travel issues in favor of driving to Wayne and Summit counties.

I don't get why you think Big Red will not be able to play the big name teams they have been playing in their OOC schedule should they join the ECOL. You would only have 5 locked games per year, leaving you 5 open dates to schedule whoever you want. Dover, Zanesville and New Phila are not going to be teams that Big Red can just roll ever year. Will they beat these teams 8 or 9 out of 10 times? Very possibly, and history shows that to be the case. But what teams do they not do that to? I think it would be good for some of the other bigger schools in the Eastern District to get a shot at Big Red every year and hopefully raise their programs closer to that level. Plus, until another Zach Collaros is walking the halls of that high school, you probably aren't going to beat Mooney or whichever parochial school has loaded up that year, so you might as well take a shot at winning some conference championships.
