Big Red turns down ECOL invite
-
FairwoodKingNow I hear that the ECOL teams are going to meet on May 3 to vote on Big Red's acceptance. I also hear that Cambridge and Marietta are against it. I can understand Marietta's reluctance. They have no chance of beating us in football in a normal year and they probably don't look forward to the long road trips for the other sports. Cambridge may feel the same way.

ferflogDepending upon whom you talk to, you get different reactions to Big Red's adventure into the ECOL. I can assure you that Meadowbrook will be voting in favor of Steubenville's acceptance. Our basketball coach (who is also our AD, for now) is looking forward to playing the Big Red in basketball, even though we graduate 7 seniors and will probably be awful next year. He just looks forward to the competition.
Some have suggested that Zanesville is against Big Red's joining the league, but I have been unable to verify that. ZanesVegas would know the ZHS scoop if someone want to PM him. He can be found on the "Huddle" or on the MVL Forum. -

Again..travel has never been an issue for them either.FairwoodKing wrote: Now I hear that the ECOL teams are going to meet on May 3 to vote on Big Red's acceptance. FairwoodKingI have mixed feelings about Big Red joining this league. On the one hand, it would make things a lot easier for Fred and Reno because they wouldn't have to worry about scheduling so many football games every year and dragging in these out of state teams. On the other hand, I don't know how enthusiastic the Big Red fans will get about playing Cambridge and Marietta on the road.

When do we start playing these teams in football? 2011 or 2012?ferflog wrote: ECOL Principals voted today to admit Steubenville to the ECOL. It is now official.

GoChiefsThis link says to look for football to start in 2011.
http://www.wtov9.com/news/23436630/detail.html -
FairwoodKingThat same link also says there will be no crossover game.
-
FairwoodKingDoes this mean the end of our series with Massillon?
-
GoChiefsCorrect, no crossover games will be mandatory, so that will leave you with league games in weeks 6-10. I'd imagine Massillon would want to try to move the schedule around so they could keep the series going. Surely, they could fit Steuby in the first 5 weeks somewhere.
-
coyotes22Well, when we join the Fed, I imagine we will have to play them within weeks 1-3 anyway.
-
wags6817Did anyone release which schools voted against?
-
ferflogMarietta and Cambridge. I'll find out the third.
-
pepperpotDoes this mean that Big Red might have to play 5 away games ??
-
WooHaa!This is very interesting in regard to other sports. Will they be required to play two games against conference opponents in all other sports? That's alot of travelling.
-
WooballI believe they will play 2 games against schools within their division, and only once against the opposite division. So all "Scarlet" schools will play each other twice in basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc, and only play the Gray schools once.
My question, will the NBC still make the claim of being the "premier" DII-DIII league in the area, or state as they sometimes claim?
For Big Red, I would assume some years they will play 6 home games and the next year 7. With 5 conference games, they will either have 2 or 3 of those at home. So unless they can do some creative scheduling, it will be almost impossible to have 7 or 8 home games yearly. -
ts1227Steubenville and Marietta aren't going to participate in middle school sports (unnecessary travel) and Steubenville hasn't even discussed freshman sports.
Luckily, they have the OVAC to fall back on for all of that stuff.

ferflogRiver View was the third school that opposed Steubenville's admission to the ECOL.
-
WooHaa!I'm probably missing something here, but why would Riverview vote against them if they are not going to be in the same division?
-
J-DoverI'm excited too see this happen.
-
just_a_swimmerWOW
I just read this in the TR.
I really can not believe Stueby did this but hey.....i think it is a good thing. Phila needs to step up to the plate now. They can't beat Dover with our bestest teams. Now what?
I guess it is time to start thinking HS football. Na not quite yet. -
ManO'WarI'm more excited for our bball program...hopefully this will giveit a kick in the shorts.
