CAMPBELL MEMORIAL 2011

realdeal6;812583 wrote:I couldnt agree more with that post...If you walk in to the basketball gym there is also not a single thing for any other sport either. These kids coming up have no clue or idea of the great tradition of Campbell athletics. There have been many achievements by so many of their athletic teams and to not have them honored is a real shame.

Before the fieldhouse was renovated, there was a large banner in there which recognized Campbell's 1993 state champion basketball team. It's no longer there. In the old school, there were all sorts of pictures and articles defining the success of the Campbell football program under Ed Rozum. All of that stuff seems to have disappeared. At the old Mike's Place tavern on 12th Street there was all sorts of Campbell Memorial memorabilia hung throughout that establishment. The tavern has since closed. I wonder what became of that memorabilia. The stadium should have plaques, photos, and such honoring all of the Campbell teams that won Steel Valley Conference, Mahoning Valley Conference, and All American Conference championships. Campbell also won the state baseball championship in 1993. The Red Devils had state championships in two sports in 1993. That is a major accomplishment for any school. Where is the recognition? Something should definitely be done to honor Scooter Trgovac and Coach Mickey Soroka. Scooter was a fixture and was the voice of the Red Devils in the pressbox and within the area for many years and Soroka was instrumental in the success of the Campbell football teams under Ed Rozum. Soroka is also responsible for making DVDS of many football and basketball games while he was teaching his multimedia classes.

Dominic Patton is at Campbell, at least as of the last school semester. He is the brother of Darius Patton, the Pitt recruit.

Im hearing numbers are very good at Campbell this year...and Coach Sikora is doing a wonderful job of recruiting his own to stay in town. Im hearing alot of positive and am excited about the upcoming year. I just got my schedule card, we are on the road 4 out of the first 5 games...I think the line is going to be very big, and I think we will see better play out of the qb position than we are expecting.

Sounds good. One thing I am a little concerned about is leadership from the seniors. We need a few kids to step up into those roles.

i think youll have some ups and downs...labrae game away will be a big game, if we can take that i see a campbell/girard rematch for the title. i see the struthers game as deciding whether we get in the playoffs.

If its true of what my brother has said. We should control our own destiny. And we should have a better and more discipline defence. I'm not at all worried about offense. I'm hoping we have a better defense. Defenses wins games. Also i bought a HD Cam so i can video tape all the games. And i will be Having season Games on DVD. I will be Giving the seasons to a select few after the season. I hope i don't get stopped from video taping the games. And i don't think i will be Putting them up on YouTube till the season is over. Anyone know if i will be allowed to tape the games? Cause i did see a few people do it in the stands last year.

I'm pretty sure you'd be allowed, parents do it all the time

I hope so. Cause i want to start documenting the seasons. They should not be locked up and shown. These kids bust there rear off. And they deserve to show there kids what they accomplished. And as long as there is a YouTube there will be Campbell games up on YouTube. Also I'm gonna be Posting the State game Campbell played in 89. as heart breaking it was. It will show that Campbell should have won the game by 14. There was a lot of dropped easy catches. Also i believe with all my heart that if Campbell would have got to state in 90 they would have won.

So none of the kids get copies of their games?
  • reddevil90
More then likely not. There was a Highlight video given but that's it... I have took up where i can to get the kids Videos of full games off of YouTube. Also i will be giving a few copies away to a few Huddle's at the end of the season. Then if anyone wants the 2011 season all i ask is to pay just enough back to buy more DVDs. Like i said I'm not sure how I'm gonna do it. But one thing for sure. I'm not doing it for money. I will not make no money off this just enough to buy DVD to make copies I'm also going to buy a printer that will print on DVDs I guess i could also use LightScribe But you only get a few disks. Like 15. Or i would go that route. Also they will be In HD. 1920x1080.

As of last season, videotaping was permitted at Campbell Memorial Stadium. There are even some areas in the top deck of the home side bleachers where one can set up a tripod to mount a camera on. Ironton defeated Campbell in the '89 championship game because Campbell made mistakes early, including a fumble deep in its own territory in the first quarter. Ironton turned one of those mistakes into a touchdown a few plays later. Ironton's other touchdown was a perfect pass. The Campbell kid had it well covered. The pass was just right on the money. The pass hit the kid right in the hands and in stride. I can never fault our DB's coverage on that play.
Ironton also stopped the vaunted Campbell sweep and did a great job of containing Shawn Patton. I believe he rushed for around 50 yards or so for the entire game. I do know that Demond Drayton was the leading rusher. Toby Walker did not get a single carry in the game.

I did hear that Patton broke his nose early in the game and it affected his play. There were a few dropped passes by the Red Devils. But I believe Ironton won the game because they stopped the Campbell sweep and contained Campbell's speed. And they also did a decent job limiting the yardage on the Campbell belly plays. Coach Rozum went with his bread and butter back in Patton. And Ironton stopped him. If you watch the Ironton defense, Ironton used one of their linebackers, # 36 Brownstead, to "spy" Patton. Make no mistake about it, Ironton was a very good team. From my perspective, it would be great for Campbell to play Ironton during the regular season. I know it's a long trip. But the game could be played on a Saturday. Sign a two year contract where each team plays at home. The basketball team has been going down to Ironton for the past few years. Ironton would be a much better opponent for Campbell than a team like Ashtabula Edgewood.

The 1990 game vs. Loudonville was another story altogether. I seem to remember QB Huleo Gore breaking off a long run deep into Loudonville territory in the first half. The play was nullified because of an illegal and totally unnecessary block downfield by one of the Campbell receivers. Loudonville also got a huge break in the second half when on a punt attempt the snap went over the punters head. The punter picked up the loose ball and ran for a first down and then some, deep into Campbell territory. A few plays later Loundonville scored a touchdown and then converted a faked kick placement into a two point conversion. Coach Rozum stated that the long gain on the punt attempt was due to a breakdown of responsibility on the play. On this night, the better team lost. But give credit to the Loudonville defense because they contained McCullough and Drayton enough to where they did not break off a long gainer.

It would be great to see Campbell become the state powerhouse they were in 1989 and 1990. To do that, the Red Devils need to improve a great deal on defense. On offense, the talent is there to make a deep run in the playoffs. Also, I feel that in order to win a state championship a team needs to be able to pass the ball effectively along with having a good running game. The days of just run, run, and more run and winning a state championship with a one dimensional offense are over.

Wow Dean. You got that on the nose. I have yet to Watch the State Game. I was there in the freezing cold. I cant believe i forgot about patton's nose. And you are right!! I recall when we came back to school that week after the game Patton had a nose brace on. Wow i forgot all about that. And I remember asking him something about how that happen. He said something like They hit like a F&^*(EN trains. More then a few players have said Ironton knocked them silly! The loudonville game was ours. And the Player your talking about that make the illegal hit was Emery Dubois if that's how it was spelled.

Also didn't Campbell fumble twice in a row early in 89....

A Campbell and Ironton rematch would just make me more then happy. Yeah and the Ashtabula Edgewood team is only level 1 points for div 3. I'm almost positive there is not going to be any help in the level 2 area! That could haunt the devils. Girard is going to be Girard.. Struthers with a new coach and some nice returning players on both sides. And a couple of other teams this season could give the devils a headaches. But it will all come down to defense. If they get on track we could be OK. but to be honest i have not seen a playoff defense from Campbell in years. even in this turnaround so far. we had some good defensive games last season. Like the Martin Ferry's game. But we gave a ton of points up in other games. If Coach can get that size we have motivated enough we can compete with the likes of Ursuline. Anyone hear anymore about the younger Hughes. I know he hangs with Patton. So that is not good for either one of them. But in closing Campbell is getting closer Huddlers! We know its a matter of time before they brake out one spectacular season to remember. I would hope its With Ja,les and his brother and this years team. We shall see.

Quick Question for anyone that might know. The reason i have yet to move is because i got called back to work. And there will be a Opening for comcast in the next few weeks. But my son failed Math and the school is not sure if he is eligible to lay this season. I hear from a few people that even with Summer school he will not be eligible. i tried looking it up at the OHSAA and you know how they have there site set up. I cant find anything other then he is more then likely ineligible this season. One subject and that hurt him this season. So even if i did move it wont probably matter.

Yes, two early fumbles in the Ironton game. The first one did not hurt because the defense held and Ironton missed a field goal. The second fumble resulted in an Ironton touchdown a few plays later. Ironton was very solid fundamentally and just as strong up front as Campbell was. Campbell had the edge in statistics at the end but Ironton had more points, which was all that mattered. In those state championship games, I feel a team needs to do something differently once in awhile on offense.............throw on first down, run a trick play or two, i.e. something the opponent had not seen on film. Our bread and butter was the running game, especially that sweep, which Ironton completely shut down. Ironton also played very well on special teams, keeping Campbell from taking a kickoff or punt to the house. Patton seemed to be frustrated after he fumbled. And I am certain the broken nose affected his breathing and vision. Drayton ran well. But Ironton also kept him from the long gainer. I have no idea why Toby Walker was not used on offense. There had to be a good reason for it other than to keep him from getting tired on defense.

The illegal block in the Loudonville game was indeed by Dubouse. He didn't even have to touch the Loudonville player. He blasted the kid from behind. The end result was a 15 yard penalty which in reality was something like a 50 yard penalty because Huleo's long run was brought all the way back. That was huge.

Campbell will have good size up front again. But a couple of the bigs they may be counting on are just sophomores. Of course McWilson was just a sophomore last season and he did a good job. Campbell needs to really improve on defense. They lack that aggressiveness and still give up too many points vs. the good teams. By comparison, Campbell gave up 51 points in losing to Akron Manchester in the playoff game from last year. Manchester's QB was just a sophomore and he picked that secondary apart. The 1989 team gave up a grand total of 62 points in their 10 regular season games. As far as key games, I believe they all are. The younger Hughes will be a sophomore. And from what I have heard, he is going to be in the mix for the QB spot along with Reyes. There are always issues with the Campbell kids. That's why I wait until the scrimmages begin to see who is on the roster and who is not.

Well I'm ready got the HD cam and the tripod. Just need help hiding the cam on the away games. LOL anyone up to helping free game DVDs.. LOL But i hope i can video the aways games. I'm hyped up. I cant wait till ITS FOOTBALL TIME IN CAMPBELL!!!!!! Man its sad when i was younger i hated when it got close to winter. Now that I'm almost 39 i cant wait. Last year was the most fun i had in years. Every game finally meant something. And we got that spirit back that has been missing for years. But one thing i can remember. We still didn't travel well. till the last few aways games. I can remember not having a seat and having to stand in the bitter cold at the struthers game when they played at struthers. I also remember a real nice and warm night in i believe 91 when Adams went off on the struthers D and at the time smashes the single game rushing record. I do believe Ja'les beat that this year against Girard. But one thing. Adams did what he did in 3 quarters. Cause he was out for a full querter. Wonder what he would have ended up with if he played the whole game. He could not be stopped that night. That kid had moves and breathtaking speed. But his only downfall was he was real skinny. skinny like Ja'les. But back in the late 80 early 90's the lines where bigger and somewhat stronger. I wish i had that season too. But i don't think i will be able to get it. If anyone has the season i will make a copy of the of the 64 season in return if you don't have it. I basically want the season for the Struthers game.

Guys, believe me, the last thing I want to do is leave you hanging, but until it's final one way or another, I gotta stay hushed.
