Atlantic Coast Conference Thread

I actually have a contact that is pretty close to the Carolina program. I don't know him very well, but he passes along information to me from time to time, and he has never been wrong. He has some very close ties to people "in the know" at Carolina, and he is not optimistic about Hairston's situation. I'm trying to get some more information from him, but it really doesn't sound good. Some type of new development has caused things to go from bad to worse. Seems like Carolina is about to have an awful season because of some pretty dumb decisions.

Thanks for sharing, iron. You can only glean so much from message boards, which most of the time are full of disinformation. Back when I used to work the Duke Camp during summers, I got to know several people close to the program pretty well. I've lost touch with most of them through the years, but it was nice having info and ticket hookups while it lasted. Nice that you still have a contact.

Anything new, iron? I would have to imagine that with the season about to get fully underway that a decision regarding Hairston is close. Although, I am not entirely sure who is making what decision here and what the new developments were.

As far as I can tell the decision is being made by the NCAA who is "working with" UNC. No decision has been made and both Leslie and PJ will be sitting out tomorrow night's game with Holy Cross.

I just want a decision so the team(and the fans) can move on, with or without both of them.

Toledo just beat BC at BC 94-91. And in the process won me $$$ on a +450 ML bet for Toledo!

The last thing that I was told is pretty much what wildcats just said. The NCAA basically thinks that PJ (and maybe Leslie too) was not completely honest with them. UNC maintains that both players were truthful when answering any questions posed to them by the NCAA. There is some talk that the NCAA uncovered information that was not previously known, however, and felt that it was withheld in some capacity by the players. Basically, the NCAA expected them to describe details about information they weren't asked about.

I don't necessarily know what this new information is, but it seems to be worrisome to many people close to the program. There's a fear that the NCAA is pushing for LOIC, but that absolutely has not been confirmed. As of right now, PJ and Leslie will sit out while the NCAA drags its feet on the situation. Eventually their punishment will be decided and it could be very harsh if the NCAA doesn't accept UNC's stance that the players were honest.

Personally, I think it's pretty ridiuclous that if they somehow didn't mention some detail about their mistakes, weren't questioned about it either, and then are held accountable because the NCAA was too incompetent to ask about it. Also, take this with a grain of salt. It's probably mostly true, but might not be 100% accurate. It's coming from a very reliable person, but it's not like he works in the basketball office. Not very many people know exactly what's going on.

Thanks. I can imagine. Definitely an unfortunate situation for UNC fans. Though it was a different circumstance and not involving an active player, I was sick for weeks over the Lance Thomas disaster. The waiting sucks.

While BC is not an ACC favorite by any means, I think this answers the question from the other thread about whether the Rockets are for real or not. Close calls in the exhibitions mean nothing. Duke actually trailed Drury as half-time approached in one of the exhibitions, and then went toe-to-toe with soon-to-be No. 2 Kansas two weeks later.

I wasn't sure at first, but now the long hold up is clear. The NCAA. That's pretty much all you need to know.

    Thanks for the details, iron.

Yeah, BC loses to Toledo 95-92.

    Look at BC's schedule.

    Vs Uconn
    At Purdue
    At USC
    Vs Maryland
    At Auburn
    Vs VCU
    At Harvard

They have 3 cupcake games in there, but I see them losing 7-8 non-conference games. They will need to do some serious, serious work in the ACC to have any chance.

Agreed. While coaches want to win them, they are ALWAYS giving everyone 10+ minutes it seems, and trying out different combinations of players. Then the season starts, and the 8 man rotation takes up 95+ of the minutes

My thoughts exactly. Really pumped for this season. Not really a Rocket or Falcon fan per se, but because I cover them and work with the ADs/Coaches I want them to do well. Football has always been great for us, and basketball should finally be fun to do as well this year (at least on the UT side lol)

Speaking of North Carolina, they are currently tied with Holy Cross at 25 at the half.

    Go Crusaders! Game on ESPNU.

How much of a slob was Kennedy Meeks if this is what he looks like after losing 40 pounds?
  • reclegend22
Carolina looks like it will pull off the upset. Good game through about 30 minutes, though. Heck of a fight by Holy Cross on the road in Chapel Hill.

Must have been an inadvertent typo.

J.J. Mann is fun to watch. Kid will jack it from anywhere, and doesn't even appear to have to be looking at the basket when he does. Rick Byrd's Belmont up 32 to 30 over North Carolina with 3:13 to play in the first half.
  • reclegend22
Belmont up 41 to 34 at the half. Good game thus far. Typical for a Bruin team, they are relying almost entirely on three-point shooting. In order to win against the much bigger UNC team, they'll have to continue to do so.
  • ironman02
Carolina is 9-28 on free throws. That's 32.1% as a team from the damn free throw line.

Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Belmont holds on for the win.

Without Hairston and McDonald, this team is horrible from the perimeter.
  • reclegend22
Yeah, the free shots are killing UNC. This same problem is going to come back to bite Duke as it did against Kansas (Blue Devils shot 16-of-28 free throws in that one) all season long if things are not shored up soon.

No excuse for teams at this level to be that bad from the free-throw line, the easiest shot in basketball.

McAdoo having himself a nice game.
  • wildcats20
That's a hell of an athletic play by Paige. And it should remain Carolina ball.
  • wildcats20
Belmont will hit a 3, guarantee it.
