LOL Cats!! Kentucky runs a clean bball program (just like their coach) just like Les Miles does with Football. You toot the SEC horn my friend!

Enough of the talk about players "getting paid" or "illegal benefits" for Christ's sake.

    THEY SOLD THEIR OWN STUFF.

This is hardly on the same lines as, oh I don't know...maybe a running back accepting several hundred thousand dollars and a house for his parents or a father shopping his kid's services to the highest bidder.

    THEY SOLD THEIR OWN STUFF.

From the first second this ridiculous story entered the atmosphere I've said the same thing: If the NCAA doesn't want people to have full control of things they are given legally, THEN KEEP IT ALL IN STORAGE UNTIL THEIR ELIGIBILITY IS USED UP.

Now on to JT...IF he was stupid enough to try and fudge the timing on this to protect his players or the season, then he should be dismissed for lying. Period.

In this case, the "cover up" is most definitely far more serious than the "crime" (which I say shouldn't exist at all).

I wasn't even talking about the OSU situation really...I was just talking improper benefits in general.

Like it or not, it was an NCAA violation to sell things they received because they are a part of the football team. History majors aren't getting gold pants. You can argue the validity of plenty of NCAA rules. Fact is, they knew it was a violation and did it anyway.

Like the rule or hate the rule. It doesn't matter. It is a rule and they broke it knowing exactly what they were doing.

This might be true, it might not be. If it is, there should be a lack of institutional control penalty and it should be severe. He should get what Bruce Pearl got, minimum.

The replies here are so predictable. If this was Florida instead of Ohio State, you guys would be all over it. But, it's Tressel and OSU, so there's no way it's true.

    Tell that to yahoo....

After Ohio State alerted the NCAA of the memorabilia sales in early December, the NCAA’s student-athlete reinstatement staff ruled the players were banned from the first five regular-season games of 2011. The players also had to repay the improper benefits gained – $2,500 for Pryor, $1,505 for Thomas, $1,250 for Posey, $1,150 for Herron and $1,000 for Adams. Linebacker Jordan Whiting also had to pay $150 to a charity for receiving a discounted tattoo.
ESPN used it on their bottom line too...

    For Christ's sake.

So we should just take the word of an unnamed source over Tressel, after a full investigation was completed by both Ohio State and the NCAA?

    Exactly.

Because Tressel had nothing to gain ....

Like I said, it might be true. It might not be. How many of you thought the original Bucknuts report was true?

no shit? its not like you are on an ohio based board or anything..

Seriously, how should we react? So far the only "proof" is from an unnamed source. Should we just start believing unnamed sources with 100% certainty without even a shred of other evidence to confirm the story?

Wow, shocking. Its called being a fan and having a bias towards your school/team. It goes for any school.

Most fans aren't saying that it is definitely false, but we are just skeptical when there is little evidence to support the claims. If more evidence comes out, then we can reevaluate accordingly.
  • Fab1b
The reason I am pissed is how the article is being presented. You didn't see Yahoo saying Cam Newton, or the Auburn Coaching staff knew of the pay to play at my school scheme in the title of their articles concerning Cam Newton. The article leads you to believe right off the bat Tress knew, but then the little blurb appears in paragraph two according to a source.....

And you would be running Florida to the gallows with the same report.

If this is true... Jim Tressel should be fired on the spot

Also,I'm listening to a Gainsville radio station, and they are saying that if Tressel is fired, the first call they will make will be to Urban Meyer

    S@#$!!!!!

Now its on the front page of Yahoo! with a title "Coach knew of issues"

If for some reason he was fired, they could fill the job in about a week, tops. Who wouldn't want the job?
  • lhslep134
    I don't believe this for a second.

Jim Tressel would never put any player above the program. He's too much of a class act and he's proven that time and again. If this comes out and he's guilty I'll eat crow, but for now I think it's a ton of BS.
  • Fab1b
I don't see Tress being fired, it may just be me, but even if true I don't see Tress getting fired.
  • elbuckeye28
Additionally, it seems like there has to be a few things to prove for there to be serious problems.

    1. First we have to assume this source did tell Tressel that there was memorabilia at the tattoo parlor in April.

    2. Next we have to assume that this source explicitly stated that this memorabilia was obtained from current players AND was obtained in a manner that would be in violation of rules.

    3. Next we have to assume that Tressel understood what was stated above AND conveyed the complete understanding of the exact nature of the circumstances noted above back to the source.

    4. Next we have to assume that Tressel then did absolutely nothing about this.

    5. Finally we have to assume that Tressel withheld and/or lied about this evidence during Ohio State's and the NCAA's investigation back in December.
