How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!

    I have a feeling that things will be handled this way tonight:

    Smith: Jim Tressel was tipped off to possible violations in April and passed this information onto the Compliance Department. They spoke with the players that were implicated and with the tattoo parlor in question, and at the time there was no evidence that any wrongdoing had happened. Then in December when the FBI became involved the truth came out and punishment was assessed.

    Gee: Jim Tressel is our football coach, he will remain our football coach, he has the full support of the university.

    Tressel: Reiterates what Smith said, apologizes for not being more thorough, then fields some questions from the media and in typical Tressel fasion doesn't really say anything.

    Exactly what I think will happen. The NCAA has already investigated, nothing to see here. Gene Smith clearly layed out the timeline in the initial tat 5 presser and they should stick to that.

    It's unclear whether we was talking about when they find out about the violations of the players in December, or about finding out about this possible violation of Tressel's last night.

    My guess is that he was talking about a possible violation by Tressel and they didn't want to say anything until they knew from the NCAA if this was indeed a violation and what they should do about it.

    Gee commented and said....
    We have reported a violation, a perceived violation, that we were having discussions with them (the NCAA) about the best way to handle it. We reported that immediately when we found it.
    eleven warriors blog said this on twitter..
    We're hearing Tressel will admit wrongdoing tonight, sanctions and suspension possible.

    It depends on the cirucumstances and how/who told him about it and what he did/didn't do.

    Exactly. If Tressel was told about this, we do not know how credible the source is. Any random individual can call/write/email Tressel and say that feel there is wrongdoing happening. In fact, it probably happens all the time and becomes difficult to discern between who is giving plausible information and who is just making it up.

    I think it's important that Gee said "perceived violation." When all of the tattoo information came out, they did not use words like perceived. Instead they came out and said they were going to discussing violations.

    That could be because in December that had talked with the NCAA, determined violations had occurred, and had settled on punishment. Since this was broken by Yahoo! and not by the university there may not have been adequate time yet to determine if it was indeed an actual violation and what the proper course of action/punishment should be.

    The "perceived" may tell you something about how the violations were reported to Tressel last spring and why he may have dismissed them. Just because you get a tip from someone about people screw up doesn't mean it went beyond internal offices of OSU because they didn't find the culprits at that time.

    That could very well be true, but you would think he would say "possible violation" instead. I know it's just semantics, but "perceived violation" gives off the impression that one would think it's a violation but reality is not consistent with perception in this case.

    That's what I was thinking. I can email Tressel and make up some story about a player committing wrongdoing, but since it's not credible and nothing comes of it, he would likely forget I had said anything.

    ^ My blog post on this... basically, you can't say Tressel didn't know SOMETHING about all that has gone at OSU.

    If a university was required to spend man-hours investigating every allegation called in, rival fans would spend morning, noon, and night calling their opponents with bogus allegations of wrongdoing just to waste their time. Any allegation that is investigated should be somewhat credible to the institution. Names, dates, papertrail, etc. If somebody in April had none of that other than "I think your players are doing something wrong but I can say exactly how", you can't really investigate that. Also, back in April, why didn't the informant contact the NCAA when they never heard word come out of OSU about self-reporting said violations?

    Seems fishy that it comes out AFTER the investigation in December.

    I'm sorry but Tressel isn't going to put himself or any players above the program and the contract. If Tressel was tipped, I'm sure he went about the appropriate channels and if it was inconclusive (like many on here have suggested, which I also believe), he had no reason to worry about it from April-December until it came up again.



    I'm starting to now think it went like this:

    April...

    JT to 5 guys: : guys, I heard a report you sold your stuff for money and tattoos, is that true?
    5 guys: No coach, it's not
    JT: okay then

    December

    JT to 5 guys: WTF guys why did you lie to me? Now you either have to promise you're going to be here next year to deal with it or you're not playing in Sugar Bowl
    5 guys: okay we'll promise
