How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!

the not-knowing-what's-going-on is killing me--I wish the presser was right now

I think it's important to remember that the memorabilia in question was from a couple years ago, and the violations occurred well before April and December. Unless a person had inside knowledge, most likely in this case players or store owners, neither of which likely blew the whistle on themselves, the concerned party most likely saw the memorabilia and said something. If that is the case, then why would Tressel be concerned about memorabilia that was a year and a half old?

Don't worry about it, I already posted a summary of tonight's presser.

I understand that Tressel (or any coach) can't spend all his time investigating every little bit of information that likely comes in. But for something like this, couldn't someone have verified the details by simply walking into the place and seeing the stuff hanging on the walls?

It'll be interesting to hear the story and it is funny to see the difference in approach that people take when its "their" guy. Two questions for Buckeye fans - 1) if he does say he checked it out and couldn't find anything, are you buying? and 2) if he admits to knowing and failing to report it, does his integrity take a hit in your eyes?

I don't care who calls in, but if someone says your players are trading their Gold Pants and rings for free tattoos, that's not something you just forget. Whether you think it's credible or not is up for debate, but that's not the type of thing you just forget.

ESPN seems to be a little apprehensive about this report as well. It isn't even one of their top stories.

Is it Tressel's responsibility to investigate or just report. I find it hard to believe he would be responsible for investigating something like this.

Meanwhile Yahoo keeps piling on their original story.

If that is what he was told, yes, it would be hard to forget something like that. However, it also depends on how he was told...Email, phone, fax, or face-to-face. If they sent him an email or called his office, you don't know if he really found out or if his office was notified. There are some very broad terms being thrown around. I guess we will find out more tonight.

Safe to report that there will be no nuclear bombs tonight. Tressel is not being fired/resigning.

You're right. It's not like people don't forget appointments, meetings, or worse yet, their own anniversaries and birthdays etc. Therefore, there is no way a coach that likely gets hundreds if not thousands of email, letters, and phone calls each day(many of which probably have false accusations similar to this) can forget about this piece of information. That's assuming he actually even received the information(rather than a staff member or just deleted it).

    A quick question...

    http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17300&SPID=10408&SPSID=87747

Is that how it normally appears in the spring/winter or is that a terrible sign?

The original story of a two month investigation yielding one anonymous claim without a single shred of corroboration?

Haha - now we officially have a meltdown. Site is under construction.

Well we must only plan on playing freshman next year then.

Ok, just a really bad time for updating...

I didn't think Ohio State would tip their hand that egregiously even if it was the case. I was just wondering what was going on when someone pointed it out to me.

This is NOT good, nor will it turn out to be good IMO. You don't take 16 hrs , schedule a press conference with the AD, school president and head coach to deny these allegations. No matter how you spin it, this is not a good situation.
Gene Smith is in charge of the NCAA selection committee. He was forced to fly back from his meeting to deal with this. Not good.

That was kinda funny. In a scary sort of way.

Yeah I saw it posted somewhere else as well. If you look at other fall sports, it still has 2010 coaching staff listed. They obviously haven't updated it yet. I guess it's just one of those coincidences that occurs at a horrible time.

Not a great time to be working on the site and have this happen.

Fine you can believe that. Yahoo isn't going to run a story, and Gene Smith isn't flying in from NYC when he's the chair of the selection committee, and Gee isn't showing up to a press conference to confirm that Tressel got some email that he either didn't read or just forgot about.

    Wake up.

I think the biggest thing that isn't being made into a big deal is Gene Smith is flying in from NYC, whom is the president of the selection committee. You don't bail on that for some run of the mill rumor.

Ehhh. Oregon's situation is much worse with much more concrete evidence, and although I don't keep up with Oregon's situation, I have yet to see a press conference on the matter. I don't think you can read into anything other than these are serious allegations coming from credible journalists and need a serious response.

Agree. I had just edited my comment and included that as you were typing ours. I hope I am wrong. I also have a bit of a connection at OSU. Emailed them..and didn't get specifics...but they said what they are hearing isn't going to be good news for Ohio State University. Now maybe they are hearing what some of us are...but they do have some connections.

You said there is no way a person could forget these allegations. I just tried to show you that people forget much more important things that are much harder to forget. Therefore, it is possible to forget this information. I never said that he did forget it.
