How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!

I just hate the title of that article. "Tressel knew...", stating it as a fact but then they state a single unnamed source. Such bush league journalism. If this isn't true, I'd love to see OSU sue those two 'journalists' for libel just for shits and giggles.

Yeah, that's what bothered me when I saw this come across on Twitter. It should say "Tressel MAY have known," or "Source claims Tressel knew," something along those lines.

Were ESPN to pick this up and run with it (wouldn't be a bit surprised BTW) I sure as hell would.

The thing I hate about this is the way Yahoo is presenting it. Front page of their sports site, Trouble for Tressel. Article titled "Tressel knew of gear scheme last April" then buried in the 2nd paragraph "according to a source". Well its either Yahoo knows for a fact or right now its just a source. Yahoo would be better served stating in the title according to sources Tress knew as early as April....dah dah dah!

edit - sorry charliehustle I did not see your post I just said basically the same thing

I don't know much about Yahoo Sports (never was impressed with it so I don't read much on there) but these 2 guys are supposed to be veteran journalists. Making such a lofty acquisition and turning it into fact right out of the gate without an identified source or evidence is pretty low class.

Yahoo did get the USC story blown open when ESPN turned a blind eye to it! I just really hope its not true or that nothing comes out of it dammit!! How can Auburn get by??????????

FWIW, Ken Gordon's twitter is probably going to be the best place to find updates between now and the time OSU officials make a statement.

I said a bigger problem to the NCAA. The NCAA HAS to fall back on their "amateur status" talk to keep their non-profit status as well as other things. If their members are being paid, the amateurism goes bye bye. They care a LOT more about their players being paid illegally than they do their players being suspended a game for smoking pot.

The investigative side of thing is about the only thing Yahoo! Sports has led the way in, mainly because most other legitimate sports news outlets don't do much investigative reporting. Also, it's not unreasonable that an editor and not the actual authors titled the article. Either way, it is irresponsible unless they have hard evidence. And that puts the university in a difficult spot, because if they deny it, and then definite proof is given, it's even worse for them. If there is no hard proof and they do fess up, well, it's till bad.

unless Pryor comes out and says that he was the source, that he told Tressel last April about his selling spree and coach said it was ok. There is nothing going to happen to Tressel.

Either one of two things is going on here:

    1. Yahoo dug around for 2 months after receiving a call from this source but couldn't find anything to corroborate it so they just ran with it. Then they call it a 2-month investigation hoping to make the report sound more official despite the fact that source is passing along hearsay; OR

    2. Yahoo knows more than they put in the report - meaning they can tie it all together and thet are just waiting to release more details in the coming days.

we want #1, and if this were ESPN, I would guess that's probably tthe case. My hunch is that its #2. And that would be absolutely terrible.
I seem to agree with this but I think it's #1

And I would say if it's not important to them why drug test and why have a rule?

Both are against the rules and as such both should be penalized.

Where did I say failing drug tests shouldn't be penalized? I said the NCAA cares MORE about accepting improper benefits than it does drug problems.

It's pointless responding to him. He will twist his own words around. Or yours too.

Espn now has the report up.

OSU, the new Miami. I hope OSU gets hit hard "if" its the truth. The whole last season should be vacated if this is true.

Call me a homer if you want, but I don't not believe for one second that Tressel knew anything prior to the allegations coming out in December. He's not the kind of person that would risk the careers of his players by not conforming to the rules as best he can.

Cats as if you can talk. You and your cheating entire SEC!!

Renardo Sidney(Mississippi State basketball player) and Josh Selby(Kansas basketball player) agree with this. Sidney missed all of last year due to an NCAA investigation taking the entire season and Selby missed 9 games for recieving improper benefits. Haven't seen any kids get suspended that long by the NCAA for drug use.

People said the same stuff about Tiger Woods not being the kind of person to do the stuff he did. Not comparing the two but what people(more so celebs/athletes/coaches)do nowadays does not surprise me anymore.

This thread is going in multiple directions already. To address the posters who debate whether pot smoking is worse than accepting illegal funds, the $$$ is much worse than weed. In addition, a major hurdle OSU will face will be the claims by Gene Smith that their decision to play the players at the Sugar Bowl was because they were just discovered this information weeks prior to the game. If the article is correct and JT knew months in advance, then that does not bode well at all. At best it makes Tressel look like he failed to communicate to the AD, at worst it looks like here was a complete cover up in order to justify playing the players at the bowl game.

    I concur with both sentences.

    Exactly.
