Disgusted with Trump administration - Part I

Interesting to watch Trump over in China kissing everyone's ass after spending the last year explaining to Americans why China needs to be held accountable for criminally raping the US.

I wasn't talking about Obama. I'm talking about Trump and all of his blowhard crap about dealing harshly with China. He spewed that out to blue collar audiences in many rust belt cities. Now he's over there allowing Xi to stroke his ego and doing the same in return.

    Facts do matter:

BEIJING, Nov 9 (Reuters) - China Energy Investment Corp, the world's largest power company by asset value, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to invest $83.7 billion in shale gas, power and chemical projects in West Virginia, the U.S state said on Thursday.

The agreement was the biggest among a slew of deals signed during U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit to Beijing. The total value of the deals done during Trump's trip could be as much as $250 billion.

The gas and power agreement marks the first overseas investment for newly founded China Energy, which formed from a merger of China Shenhua Group, the country's largest coal producer and China Guodian Corp, one of its top five utilities.

Beijing is supporting and encouraging its power companies to expand globally, and the agreement underscores China Energy's ambition to diversify into natural gas and the refining sector.

The touted investment would extend over a 20-year period, covering projects for power generation, chemical manufacturing and the underground storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), West Virginia's Department of Commerce said in its announcement.

The deals will likely help create jobs in West Virginia and lift its economy.

West Virginia's gross domestic product declined 0.9 percent in 2016, reversing growth seen in 2015, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"From driving growth and creating jobs to maximizing America's energy potential, the benefits for West Virginia and the country from this new investment will be significant," said U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, West Virginia, according to the statement from the state's Department of Commerce.

These are all fine. However these deals are the types that were in place before Trump ever went over there. The whole setup of the trip was for him to go over with some US executives and ceremonially sign deals that had already been arranged. None of it has anything to do with changing the fundamental trade relationship with China...like he promised to be a beast about.

The money is being invested here, not just by these companies, but by hundreds of other companies and countries that now know America is back open for business, and will not treat invested capital and employers like dogsh!t.

People make a big deal out of this....I didn't think teachers made enough money to PAY taxes...

I can’t imagine many teachers are taking more than the standard deduction.

Maybe on a one off basis here and there, but Trump on his trip did not start any new trade deals, nor did any other country promise to enter into or change their own bilateral trade deals with the U.S.
Meanwhile, all the Asian nations are steaming forward with the TPP, without the U.S.

I am not talking about "trade deals", I am talking about real investments into the U.S. economy.

Again, that is more on a one off basis.
Trade deals have the most impact as it involves whole economies, not just one off companies.

That said, I'm all about and for more and more companies investing here.
But, China is not changing how they operate and Trump's trip did nothing to change that.
Japan isn't changing either, neither is Korea, or Vietnam on their agreements.
  • QuakerOats
The agreements have been no friend of the working man in the U.S.

I will gladly accept $250 BILLION in new investments, not to mention the undertakings of U.S. based businesses in addition thereto.
  • ptown_trojans_1
How much of that $250B will be investing in the next few years?
Curious, as it sounds great, but how much of it is real money and binding deals for projects?
Usually free trade agreements have a quick impact.

I would love for all that money to appear and invest here, but if most of it is over a decade, it does not mean much now then.

Whatever comes of this promised deals, they didn't have anything to do with Trump's visit. These are company deals that were in the works long before his visit, and in some cases, long before his presidency. This is a political gesture - "announcing" these deals while he is there.

To me, the bigger story is why the guy who talked so tough about China for the past two years is now over there smooching butt cheeks like a woodpecker.

    Anyway you slice it,
    Obama's first year: -$1T
Trump's first year: +250B (at least)

Uhh, Obama's 1st year was during the great recession. So, it is apples and oranges.
I hope that $250B happens, but Trump does like to stretch the truth, so I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, Trump's comments about Putin were just fucking awful and a slap to the face to the intelligence community.

So will anything come of this Wikileaks and DTjr news? Pretty damaging leaks revealed DTjr and Wikileaks were in cahoots. Not that we didn’t know politicians and media outlets were silently talking, but to actually read the communications...

Reading this article, it kind of seems like a non-starter. The email to the Russian lawyer/agent was fairly damning (though probably well short of illegal), and I don't think this comes close, based on the below article:

    https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-secret-correspondence-between-donald-trump-jr-and-wikileaks/545738/
"The messages, obtained by The Atlantic, were also turned over by Trump Jr.’s lawyers to congressional investigators. They are part of a long—and largely one-sided—correspondence between WikiLeaks and the president’s son that continued until at least July 2017. "

"Though Trump Jr. mostly ignored the frequent messages from WikiLeaks, he at times appears to have acted on its requests. "

Certainly doesn't look like collusion with Wikileaks to me. Perhaps there was a duty to report this, but I'm not seeing a whole lot that Trump Jr. wouldn't have read on the internet a few hours or couple days later.

Like you said, politicians and the media talk silently, and arguably collude (which is not a crime). If, and I think it's a pretty big if, they can establish definitively that Wikileaks was an intermediary with Russia....then I think you still need a lot more than this to prove the Trump campaign was in any way directing efforts and/or offering favors in return for the service.

It's not nothing, but it's not very much, either.

I don't know, man. I don't think any of this looks good for Trump jr or some of these people.
on the same day that Trump Jr. received the first message from Wikileaks, he emailed other senior officials with the Trump campaign, including Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Brad Parscale, and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, telling them Wikileaks had made contact. Kushner then forwarded the email to campaign communications staffer Hope Hicks. At no point during the 10-month correspondence does Trump, Jr. rebuff Wikileaks, which had published stolen documents and was already observed to be releasing information that benefited Russian interests.
On October 3, 2016, Wikileaks wrote again. “Hiya, it’d be great if you guys could comment on/push this story,” Wikileaks suggested, attaching a quote from then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton about wanting to “just drone” Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange.
“Already did that earlier today,” Trump Jr. responded an hour-and-a-half later. “It’s amazing what she can get away with.”
A PAC run anti-Trump site putintrump.org is about to launch,” Wikileaks wrote. “The PAC is a recycled pro-Iraq war PAC. We have guessed the password. It is ‘putintrump.’ See ‘About’ for who is behind it. Any comments?” (The site, which has since become a joint project with Mother Jones, was founded by Rob Glaser, a tech entrepreneur, and was funded by Progress for USA Political Action Committee.) The next morning, about 12 hours later, Trump Jr. responded to Wikileaks. “Off the record I don’t know who that is, but I’ll ask around,” he wrote on September 21, 2016. “Thanks.”
NOt to mention, Trump tweeted about Podesta emails 15 minutes after WikiLeaks asked Trump Jr. to report..
