Nothing tops $4-5 per lb for weight plates.

Dam, I remember that is was like $.50 - $.60 per lbs, at Play it Again not more than 8-10 years ago

I paid similar for dumbbells there

It's closer to $1 per lb normally, now.  A little more for dumbbells, a little less for larger plates, a little more for smaller plates.

I almost pulled the trigger on a couple of 50-lb plates for $100 each, but I decided I wanted ones with handles.  The 50-lb plates with handles are like $180 each right now, plus tax.

There is a guy here in town about 60 years old and he still runs 50-60 miles a week...he’s been running that way at least back to the mid 80’s.....he’s gotta be getting there

He's a genetic machine.  A lot of people could never pull that off.  I'm a stocky built guy.  I ran ~15-20 miles per week for almost 20 years (from ages 25-45).  My knees are wrecked with osteoarthritis now.  I loved running, but it beat up my body.  I know other people who have similar stories.

Guys like the one you described were always a curiosity.  I'd see them in 5Ks and half-marathons.  60, 70 years old and able to run no problem.  Granted they were rarely fat and usually had one of those slighter, small boned builds.  Anyway, that's a pretty impressive acheivment.

When you have that time and motivation, a gym even 5 minutes away can't beat having it at home.  Although I've always found it less motivating lifting at home by myself.  But cardio all day - because all you do at the gym on cardio is listen to your tunes or watch tv, anyway.

Only thing that sucks about the spinlock dumbbells I have is it takes too damn long to change weights.  Between warming up and supersets I spend all my rest time rushing to change plates before my next set.  The IronMaster are easier to change, and it will give me a second set of dumbbells to make life a little easier.

Yeah that’s the dumbbells I got too  I didn’t want them. I really wanted a full set but they were going for like 3 grand and I couldn’t justify that extra cost.

How has your workout/exercise changed as you've aged?

I'm coming up on my 50th.  My changes are that I:

  • No longer run outside, but only on the treadmill for 3-6 miles per week
  • Mix in high intensity interval cario on non-running days
  • Lift lower weights with more reps
  • Lift only in compound movements, not isolating things like curls, shrugs, etc.

All of these have helped me keep going strong when normal aging stuff starts to creep up.  What is very hard for me to do is remember that I'm not 22 years old.  When you get into the heat of things, that "push it" voice is just there.  But I know that the key to longevity and avoiding injury is to moderate and not do stupid stuff that I know will injure me.

How about you guys?

I just one day stopped giving a shit about numbers regarding lifting. Focused more on low impact and total body stuff.

Currently I don't lift at all. HIIT, light runs, and cycling.

I don't like lifting as much as those other things.  My main goal is to avoid losing more muscle than I have to as I age.

I run about 5-10 miles a week. I don’t really enjoy it that much anymore, plus I’m pretty sure I have osteoarthritis in my knee from it. I do a lot of lifting with the push/pull method. I don’t follow any formulas or write down my numbers. I just go and try to spend an hour or so. I’ll run on my non-lifting days.

I’ve never been able to get into any cardio that isn’t running unfortunately. I hate biking whether on an actual bike or stationary. I dislike the elliptical even more although I haven’t messed with it in a long time so maybe I should try it again.

I've slowed down on the one run I do a week, stay in zone 2, stretch and recover

Same with biking and swimming, longer and slower

No longer heavy on squats and deadlifts, more form, and time under tension

So I’ve never liked running but I always did it. But I’ve fought ball of foot pain for the last 5 years and it’s been miserable. So when we started our home gym we bought a peloton and rowing machine.

I don’t think I’ll go back to running. Between the bike and rowing I can get my heart up and a good sweat going and my feet don’t kill me.

Screw that.  Walking takes more time, but all the research I've read says it's just as good for heart health....without the physical toll on your body.

I mean the guy has looked like hell all of my life. I’ll guess 5’9 120, sickly toned and colored.

Running like that ages you had too....heart may be good but guys around age 40-60 that run a ton all look 5-10 years older than they are.

Walking gets it done without the wear and tear

24 hours? Seems intense. I've heard of 16, not 24.

so.. you're just never gonna eat again? when do you eat if you fast for 24 hrs? if its a one time thing I'm not sure how valuable it'd be.

I've done weekly 24s a lot when I was big into IF.

I'd go 2pm-2pm starting Wednesday afternoons. I did it for more of a self challenge than anything. Strict 16 hour fasting is the way to go if you're looking for results.

I've done a couple 48s, I am normally a two meal a day 16/8

The hunger usually subsides after hour 20

If anyone ever asks me, I suggest looking up Dr Jason Fung first

I did some IF for a decent amount of time, maybe 2+ months of a decently strict 16/8...saw nothing from it. Didn't feel any different. My mom enjoys it though.

During the pandemic I hit running pretty decent. Most I've ran in 15+ years, as I put in over 170 miles. Started coaching again (before losing my job) and the schedule was thrown all off.

I now hit the gym with a former player of mine. We are at it at 5am (yuck), and this is Week 3. I love the gym MUCH more than running. I do hate Planet Fitness though. My normal (LA Fitness) is no longer opening at 5am due to the pandemic. I have no other time to go as I teach my kids due to the shutdown, my wife is at work (teaching), and then she has coaching from 7-9pm. So, it's early mornings for me. Deadlifted 225 today, first time I've deadlifted since 2002 probably. Felt pretty good. Was a bit scared due to my back surgery in 2017.

Kettlebell swings: bent knee and try and get the squat motion or keep knee straighter and emphasize getting the bell back between your legs?

You can have knee bend. You're hinging and using your hips mostly.

Anyone have a plug on tube resistance bands? I gave up months ago and thinking I'll start the search again.

I personally don't trust them, make you check them often for breaks and cuts

How many guys at the average gym do you think are on the juice.  I used to go to the LA Fitness in Westlake during the day to lift and there were a lot of bodybuilder types there.  I never gave it much thought.  But some recent articles I've read about steroid abuse makes it sound much more widespread than I ever would have guessed.  Now I think most of those bigger guys I saw fit the profile of someone who uses steroids (or some other type of PED).

So what do you experts at Ohiochatter think?  When you go to the gym, are you in a sea of juiced up dudes?
