Still hitting it pretty good.  Took a few weeks off after I got back.  Toughest as always is the eating part!   Gym added a new thing called threshold that tracks your intensity of your workouts which is addicting and a great way to gauge how hard you really are working.

How does it work?

Basically just reads your HR and workout intensity.   Gives calories burned but I'm always skeptical of that segment in any program.    Charts it for you, sends an email summary,  and the HR zones are displayed in monitor's around the gym so you can see it in real time.   I like it because I then challenge myself to increase my HR, and not rest too long or too short.

Scroll half way down and it describes it.   They provide a HR monitor or u can use your own and its....free!    -

Still doing well. Going on regular visits to gym (we have one in neighborhood as part of HOA) for 2+ years now. Went from 218 lbs, to 190 lbs. Then tried to build the muscle mass back up to around 200. Currently sitting at 202, but leaner and much stronger (I'm about 6'1).

Never dieted, but definitely got more selective on what I eat. Just make healthier meals in general, but didn't cut anything out. Traveling as much as I do is tough on a diet, but on the flip side, I get bored in the hotel room, so I'll spend double my workout time in the gym (although hotel gyms can be limiting).

Not sure I have a current goal for 2018. 2016 was lose the 25 lbs. 2017 was build up the mass 10-15 lbs. I guess just keep myself at this level would be the main goal. I hate running, so maybe try and run 2 times a week (currently I go 1-2 miles once a week) and build up decent cardio...like 8 miles or so. I just can't go more than about 5 minutes (treadmill or outside) without wanting to slit my throat while running. Despise it.

Side note...we have the bench/squat/whatever bar in the gym, but it's on the "training wheels". I.e. the bar isn't free and you don't have to balance it.

Does anyone know about what the difference is in actual weight to a free bar. For instance, if I bench 250 on this bar, is it only about 200 on a free bar?

Likely.  It is not a new theory as HR monitors have done this for years but what makes it good is that members can see the real time access on monitors instead of looking down onto and using thier own device.   You can use the app to track workouts outside of the gym if you have a monitor.   I know my brother's gym in Pittsburgh has something similar .  They have a class designed for it I think  but mostly its to track the intensity of any Work out

I concur.  I used to be like that but now my limit is negative 5.   On the TM I just do hiit with incline sprints.   Any sort of distance....he'll no.

I have been in a rut the last couple of weeks with the holidays. Wondering if anyone has a free workout program, with schedule and exercises available online they would recommend? I find I do much better if I can just look at the schedule, and say, "OK its tuesday and this is what I have to do."

I have access to dumbells, treadmill, eliptical, and a universal machine. I'm in decent shape as far as lifting, and I look pretty good but my cardio is crap. Any recommendations with links would be appreciated.

I'm assuming you mean Smith machine?

There really is not a conversion,  but I would use 75% as a rule of thumb.   It depends on much experience you have with free weights.

Not sure if I posted this on the old site, but Imy gym has free classes with the membership and I started doing Yoga (vinyasa) once a week at the beginning of November.  I used to be one of those "Yoga is boring" people, but in a class environment I don't find yoga boring at all.  The classes seem to go by very quickly.  It is probably because I am in discomfort for most of the moves.  I feel a lot better after class though.  After doing it for two months I have noticed the benefits, especially with weight lifting recovery and squat depth.  I went for a jog for the first time (sans sprinting) in awhile and ran 8 miles.  I felt pretty good.  I can see why pro athletes do it and why people call it the fountain of youth.  I am going to try and incorporate it twice a week to my schedule eventually.

I'm shocked to read how many calories vinyasa is claiming you burn in an hour. More than 1 hour of running. Hard to believe.

I remember the yoga portion of P90X kicking my ass when I did it way back when. As I get older I think I should probably give it another try, my flexibility is shit.

Yoga is legit. Not only will it make you burn serious calories, it will also humble you.

PLT: P90X3 yoga is only 30 minutes.

Smith. Yes, that's it. Thanks. I figured it was about that as well. I'm at like 250 on the thing, but last time I used a free bar for benching it was closer to 190...

It is def very humbling and I can also see why it burns a decent amount of calories.

I'm not a fan of treadmills or indoor tracks but I just can't run when it's this cold outside. It kills my lungs and I never feel very loose. Usually I won't run when it's less than 40 but next week in Dayton it's finally suppose to get back to mid 30s and I may make an exception.

My running is continuing to progress. Last summer I could barely run a couple miles at 9:30/mile pace. I'm up to 3-4 miles now around 8:10/mile now. I'm doing a 5K time trial towards the end of each month. I did 24:40 towards the end of November then 24 flat at the end of December. Shooting for 23:30 in a few weeks.

My weight peaked several months ago at 250lbs. I'm down to 229 as of the other day.

This is hard to believe and goes against human instincts.  Distance running should be at zone 2 (220 minus age 70%-80%), 2 minutes slower than race pace for extended distances for 80% of your running workouts.  I.E. 5-6 miles at 10-10:30 pace for a better 5K time.

I wouldn't put too much thought into it. I'm not running 6 miles on a treadmill/indoor track anyhow. I can see the progress so I know what I'm doing is working. If my workouts start to stagnate then I'll start to consider how I can be more by the book.

My main goal right now in the middle of the winter is to just show up and do something. When it gets warmer and I can get outside I'll reexamine the process.

I just signed up for a 10-mile Tough Mudder with my brother-in-law in June. I haven’t ran more than a mile in 8 years and my only cardio is basketball. Hopefully 2 months is enough to train because I don’t think I’ll want to start running before spring.

I did a Tough Mudder in the mountains about 6.5 years ago without training at all. It was rough, but I made it through alright. If you train pretty solid for 2 months you will be fine.

Drinking flavored sugar water as a health benefit on another thread reminded me.  Anyone else see Dr Shawn Baker and his experiment with going full on carnivore for 6 months?  Interesting, but I don't want to give up my vegetables.
