I can't remember if it's been mentioned here, but they basically admitted they always knew masks helped but they didn't want to overwhelm the system and make sure they had enough for healthcare workers.

Not according to the newest research by the WHO.

This is a big problem with Orange Man's "I'm always right/best" act. Except for sycophants, it's difficult to believe anything he says, even when he's right (the WHO IS a joke).

I'm not a huge fan of Trump, but I'm glad he's called out the WHO.  Their entire reason for being is to be a resource for COVID-type things.  They've been inconsistent throughout and have generally sucked in offering any meaningful help.  They're a "world" health organization, so they're treated as sacrosanct when in reality, no one knows much about what they do.  If COVID is the test of their mettle, it's been a big F.

Dr. Acton maybe could go run it soon.

She can fix it.

Everything they have said so far has turned out to be wrong.

Sure, but I still think it was a mistake to defund them.  Maybe a small cut, but they're still doing good work in a lot of 3rd world countries and the first (possibly only) line of defense keeping some really nasty shit from going global.

Agreed. The WHO sucks on COVID, but their work on polio and other diseases is pretty good. Now, China will just swoop in and have more influence in the WHO. As we step back from around the world, China will gladly step forward....

THis.

I feel like we here about all this 2nd spike stuff.....the only number I would really care about is how many people are actually in a hospital for it.

All I care about is the number of children you've brainwashed into your stupid way of thinking.

And it's hear, not here.

Hear is a verb. "I hear Spock coming. Dude's a fuckin idiot."

Here is an adverb. "Here comes Spock. Dude's a fuckin idiot."

I didn't personally agree with Dr. Acton.  But I don't think she deserves the vitriol she's received.  She's a public health expert.  She was asked for her input from a public health perspective.  She gave that.  It is/was DeWine's job to balance that with other perspectives.  Instead, he paraded her out everyday which essentially made her the "bad guy" when people didn't like his decisions.  Again, I didn't agree with her assessments.  But she did what she though best when she was asked for her advice.  The fact that we all know her name like we do is evidence that DeWine hid behind her.

Perhaps he "paraded" her out because he thought people would listen to a medical professional about a deadly, highly contagious virus. Instead, people decided to whine and cry about masks and go to her house with guns.

Do you have a story that supports that people took guns to her house?  I know a handful of protesters showed up. But the only evidence of the threatening protesters with guns I saw was FB posts from a Dublin social warrior who wasn't physically present.

And I guess that means we just give up then and just let them have it? Cool. Does that apply to Taiwan and Hong Kong to you too?

Thanks.  That is f-ed up.  I don't blame her for stepping down - there are too many nutjobs out there.  I still think DeWine could have done a lot more to keep her behind the scenes.

I think that it was good to hear updates from Dr. Acton and to have a doctor available to answer medical questions from the media, but I think that doing it every day was too much. I think that it would have been more effective perhaps once a week. It often felt like they were just trying to fill time.

Yea.....2 hours every day just made people tune out sooner.  Maybe every other day for the first few weeks then weekly.

I stopped listening about about a week.

That's what we were saying at work. So many days, they didn't really have anything important to announce, so you had random-ass filler (DeWine's wife's recipes, kids dancing on Tik-Tok, other stupid shit) followed by basically just reiterating the same stuff we already knew from previous days, just with maybe some updated numbers thrown into the mix. There's a fine line between being regular and emphatic with your announcements and over-killing things and with having long conferences on a daily basis, it did feel like overkill. Personally felt that having definite Monday/Friday conferences and then doing others if a big announcement had to be made on a particular day would have been better.

Let them have the WHO? They already have it. They're buffoons anyway, screw them.

Interesting. In Maryland, Gov. Hogan's briefing was always quick, usually just 30 mins, maybe more if he had a new policy change. The numbers were given and then questions were asked.

Cool. Man, you just love China taking over more and more of the international institutions and programs. You do know the U.S. created a lot of these post WWII and they were instrumental in promoting pro-western values and science during the Cold War? Now, if we just throw them to China, we are just throwing to China the ability to control their version of values, science, and the international community? I know you say screw them, but in the long game, this may be a dumb play.

Who's to say all of our traditional allies will now shift to China over us in the coming years?

Again, it's already a done deal. China "owns" the WHO. What do you want done about it? Please don't generalize, what specifically should we do?
