Was the movie White Chicks awful? Was that demeaning? Did it hurt anybody's feelings? Did anybody get depressed? Were people rolling around on the ground like they were just shot? Did anybody get fired?

What about the movie Coming To America?

Was White Chicks awful?

Yes, but not just for the whiteface.  That movie sucks.

To answer your question, it was still awful and ignorant, yes.  Were people's feelings hurt?  Probably not, because the ones being depicted were the majority.

But that doesn't make it any less ignorant.

Lol ya'll are going to hurt yourselves with all of this reaching. It's so simple, and O-trap and ptown already explained it. Don't paint your face black. The end.

That's what we do and we've been doing this (not just this subject) for a long time!

The historical context is the difference.  The traditional use of blackface was to depict blacks as slaves/ignorant/stupid/animalistic, etc.  That's why it is offensive to some.  I don't think Megyn Kelly meant anything by her remarks though.  She just said something off the top of her head that, had she to do it over again, probably would not have said.  But so what.  We all do that everyday - at least I do.  People need to cut each other a break and use common sense.

Agreed.  The knee-jerk reaction to her relatively innocent (if still maybe oblivious) comments have been insane.

Every person needs a little leeway when it comes to this kind of thing, because we're all at least a little ignorant of one another's life situation.

But when the end result of the over-the-top knee-jerk reaction is for one person on this site to directly compare blackface to wearing a costume of a black superhero and for QQ to make his typical apples-to-oranges comparison that has no real meaning, it's worth a laugh, at least!

Good; it was intended to be funny

I think it just depends on if it’s funny or not. Dressing up as a criminal and doing black face is not funny. Robert Downey jr blackface was funny

I actually think it was worse when she said Jesus was white

Robert Downey, Jr's blackface was self-aware and intended to be seen as such.  Not unlike Teddy Perkins on Atlanta.

"Funny" is entirely subjective.

The incorrect branch of Romans, who fell away from the true gods (who'd been swiped from Greece and renamed, but whatever) to hitch their wagons to some johnny-come-lately!

Shoot, it was the post-Constantine Romans.

Ugh. Really, do I have to go into this? It's kinda obvious folks...

He can dress up like Black Panther, no problem. He just cannot be in black face. He can wear the mask and be a-ok.

Kelly was specifically talking about her friend wore black face so she could be Diana Ross. That's not cool.

So, again, costumes and masks: Ok. Painting your face black: Not ok.

So if someone is really good at makeup and can make a kids face look just like Black Panther in the whole suit, since the suit is mostly black, this would be racist?

you have to see how dumb that is.

Now, walking around in black face just to make fun of black people would obviously be racist, but doing it to dress like a superhero on Halloween is not racist, no matter how you do it (mask or makeup), and anyone that suggests otherwise is quite frankly a moron.

I've said this before, so maybe it will make more sense now - you know it will offend people, and yet you choose to do it anyway....again, basically the definition of an asshole.

It depends on who is taking offense. If black people (doubtful) you're the asshole. If SJW/NPC (more likely), they're the assholes. And the racists.

Not if black people aren't, no. Actually, they're more than free to be idiots. Being offended on the behalf of people who aren't is bigotry due the the implication involved.

Ahhhhh.....the classic "you're not entitled to your feelings, so it's perfectly acceptable for me to ignore them".  LOL, it's their fault they're offended.

You're entitled to "feel" anything you want. I'm entitled not to give a fuck. And yes, if I hurt your feelings, that's 100% on you.

Well, apparently PayPal has suspended a social media site called Gab.ai because the Pittsburgh shooter used it. And so far two hosting services have dropped them also, without giving any particular reason other than violation of TOS. This is after (or even though) they worked extensively with the DOJ and FBI to gather information. So now there are new calls for government to intervene with social media.

While I would prefer to lean libertarian on this issue, I'm starting to see the point that political ideology censorship has a huge role in this. After all, youtube didn't have this kind of ruckus when  a youtube creator shot people at youtube. Facebook didn't have issues when a person was violently tortured on its services. Twitter still hosts antifa and Hamas.

So there are certain preferences being displayed and they aren't necessarily superficial preferences. But I'm not sure government intervention is the answer.

If we stopped doing everything that offended people, but wasn’t actually racist or homophobic etc, then we should just walk around and not talk to anyone.

I am sorry, but just because someone is easily offended by something that is NOT racist, doesn’t mean you have to stop doing said thing. We are far too “PC” today and people are afraid to talk without offending someone.

Like i said, wearing black face as it has been historically obviously racist. Painting your face as Black Panther for Halloween...if that offends you then you need thicker skin.
