2013 Orrville Red Riders football

I was reading the Daily Record today and I noticed that Tignor's Hometown Hardware in Wooster is holding an Anniversary Celebration tomorrow, Saturday the 15th. FREE t-shirts to the first 30 people in the doors at 8 A.M. and FREE food to all who enter, all day. I don't know if there will be free candy or not but you guys might want to check it out.

Also, I'd like to see Orrville win against any of the Division I playoff teams we lost to recently, that went on to win the Region those years. Not to mention....I've already witnessed Wooster football playoff wins in my lifetime....so nice fail there also. Aren't you one of the guys that swore Devault was the problem with your team last year. Yeah, he's a terrible coach....so you OBVIOUSLY know what you're talking about.
    Ya panties in a bunch!!

Heard Dick Schafrath was in Wooster's weight room this week. He was regaling the boys with stories about the Wooster-Orrville games he played in 60 years ago. Told them he was going to help coach and would be on the sidelines for them this year. I think Dick is 76 or 78? He's had some health issues, I know. Very classy of coach Haas and neat to see Wayne County's greatest football player and future HOF'er on the sidelines this year. Sadly, only about a quarter of the kids even knew who he was, but that's a generational thing I guess.

Great note from Mike Plant today about the passing of Ellis Fields Sr.

"FAREWELL, MR. FIELDS -- Many Orrville boys and girls -- now well into adulthood -- lost a valued mentor when Ellis Fields Sr. passed away June 1 at the age of 86 after a long illness.

A 1944 Orrville High graduate who served in the Navy before a long career at Quality Castings, Mr. Fields was also a baseball man through and through. I know that he did a lot of good work while associated with the Orrville Area Boys & Girls Club, as a member of its Board of Directors and as a coach, a role he also filled in Little League. One of his sons, Ellis Jr., was a slick-fielding first baseman -- with an afro that rivaled Oscar Gamble's -- on the 1976 Red Rider team that made it all the way to the state tournament, the only OHS baseball team to do so.

After the funeral services at Grace Brethren Church in Wooster, as I stood in the hall waiting to go into the dining area, some pretty significant pieces of Red Rider football tradition walked by. First, Warner Harper, Orrville's version of Jim Brown from the mid-1950s, went past, still looking physically impressive. Then came Reggie Williams, an outstanding linebacker at OHS and The College of Wooster before embarking on a long, distinguished career in the military and then in business, along with Tyrone Barnett, the star back on the great 1960 Rider team who went on to play at Ohio State.

Finally, there was Mr. Fields' brother, Dr. Robert "Bobbie" Crigler, a three-sport star at OHS who, while in college, became a boxing and wrestling champion. When Dr. Crigler graduated from Ursinus, he became the first African-American from Orrville to earn a college degree, as well as becoming his college's first African-American grad, and he went on to earn a Master's Degree and a Ph.D."

Mr Williams & Mr Barnett were in the inaugural class of the OHSHOF of 1991, Mr Harper (called the best athlete in OHS history by Bobby Knight) was inducted in 1993 & Mr Crigler in 2007.

Mr Fields is not in the HOF & I'm not sure he's ever been nominated, which is too bad. According to his obituary, he was very involved in the lives of Orrville youths through Orrville Youth Baseball & the Orrville Boys Club & I believe ran a basketball camp as well. Sounds like the start of a worthy nominee.

RedRider1, let me know where I can send my nomination in for Old Rider to join the next class of the Orrville HOF. The way he talks, I can't believe he's not still suiting up on Sundays...

Pissed ya off enough on the other thread that you had to come here and take a jab??? I like how you play CC! And yes...If my body could still do it, I would love to still be playing.

Some of us prefer to not act like we're still in high school is all. You're getting as annoying as some of the newer Rider posters from last fall.

CCRolly - Honestly how are the generals looking this year? Should probably look around. I am sure there is a Woo town thread. I don't think you or Old Rider should get too mad, nothing wrong with taking a little pride in the program and town that raised us? You and the woo included. Old Rider - Any word on kids showing up in the gym and on the practice field getting ready? Just interested to know if they are getting it in and getting ready.

    What makes the grass grow??????????????????
  • Old Rider
    Blood..Blood..Blood!

Haven't heard much on field or weightroom workouts...just hope the kids are putting the work in NOW and can still taste that 1-9 season.
  • sanitizer
    still taste that 1-9 season
    Yes! Motivation!

I was told by coach Mike Burkholder that "loosing doesn't hurt very much if you don't invest much and winning isn't as sweet". Loosing only hurts when you care enough to really prepair to win. I hope these kids put in the work and understand the honor in it? Another interesting year for the ville.

What exactly happend to the riders last year? They didn't seem like a team that would finish 1-9 after the NW game. Then again we weren't expecting a 2-8 season either

If we don't block the punt against you guys we go 0-10. We stunk in every way possible! Much the same for this year...how about you guys?

Here's a weird one...went by Woo's weight room facilities a couple nights ago and the varsity practice field was filled with Orrville youth football players practicing. What was that about? Has the construction torn up their practice fields? Dogs living with cats...anarchy...
  • CCRolly
They shouldn't have let them into town. Send them to Apple Creek. :D

These levies keep failing and Orrville kids will be practicing at other facilities/schools...permanently! Was is it a camp or parks/recs deal possibly? I agree CC...they shouldn't have been allowed in town. How do we know for sure that it wasn't Haas trying to poison our kids or even worse...recruit them??

LOLed at this so hard my secretary came in to see what was so funny!
  • CCRolly
There isn't anyone worth recruiting from Orrville. That has always gone the other way if I'm remembering correctly.

There are only 2-3 Wooster posters that post on here very often, so you may have a problem finding that thread. Wooster has some good athletes returning this season, but it will boil down to the line and if the defense can finally come together. Would be nice to have a good RB to count on also. Tough non-league schedule of Medina Highland, Wadsworth, and Chagrin Falls should get us ready for the OCC.
