Sure would be a sight...will you be at the curb to catch that "free" candy? LOLSeries62;1456093 wrote:Old R...if you feel it's such a good idea, why don't you, rrfan and rr1 get together and do that "VOTE YES to the levy" sign on the truck at the 4th of July parade! It would surely be an opportunity for you all to put your money where your mouth is. Obviously, not that many people in town are reading this blog, and, you three, or however many supporters you all can garner, can all have bull horns and "talk" to the people as you have on here to encourage them to "VOTE YES".
rr1 can make a big poster displaying his demographic statistics and tell the "poor" (that will obviously line the streets of the parade in an effort to get "free" candy), how they are one of the primary reasons for the economic decline of our community and schools!
You can then have redrider555 to "drag tow chains" and brf to "eat gun powder" during the parade to encourage the kids to get on the football team!
...Yeah...that would be a sight to see! LOL!!! -

Old Rider1 cent candy and nightcrawlers. Then head to the tile plant or the pond near the trussel!

RedRider1People currently seeking jobs are able to get those prime seats for the free candy & therefore is unfair and the parade should be ended due to that unfairness.
I'll start the petition to end the long standing tradition & threaten to sue if it is not ended.
If we want to get the word out about the levy we should tell people there's a free candy giveaway at the high school...that would sure bring em out. I've seen it with my own eyes at the downtown holiday event & the bunny trail at the school. People will walk through hell if there's something free on the other side of it...especially candy. -

I don't think the Levy will pass anytime soon. Two 60/40 votes against tells me people can't afford it. Whether we like it or not, school funding as we know it is gone forever, high paying jobs in town are in decline and prices of everything from gas to food are still on the rise.RedRider1;1455644 wrote:Any board member will tell you they've scheduled these types of meetings and nobody shows. I try to be connected to local issues and would definitely have my radar up for a meeting like this...but I think it's more of an issue of people NOT KNOWING these meeting are taking place. Needs to be announced in OrrViews, the DR & on WQKT. I don't think enough is being put out there for people to get involved. If they don't put info out there, and a renewal levy fails, they have no one to blame but themselves...after two 60/40 defeats, I'd hope the message is loud & clear that the community is not feeling a part of the process...just auto dialed & asked for their vote.
I feel it is useless and counterproductive to blame any certain demographic of our society, black or white, rich or poor, doctor or factory worker, times are tough and alot of people are struggling across all demographics.
Our schools are probably going to have to do more with less. -

They are doing more with less & will continue to do so....but at some point they will need an infusion of new money simply to keep the status quo.
To ignore the shift in demographics (that I proved with facts, not assumptions) in our town doesn't make it any less true.
High paying jobs are gone & a once strong middle class has been declining for the last decade.
Not trying to be mean spirited, but there are factors that have us in this situation..,,and the socioeconomic piece is a significant one. -

If the middle class is declining, and it is, then that should tell you that to a degree, people are earning less money. If people are earning less money which is a "significant socioeconomic piece" where do you think the "new money" is going to come from? I'm willing to believe that many of those "high paying" jobs head north on Rte. 57 every day around 4 - 5:30PM.RedRider1;1456516 wrote:They are doing more with less & will continue to do so....but at some point they will need an infusion of new money simply to keep the status quo.

I made that "free candy" comment in jest as I realize your view of the "poor" seems very condescending. I am also well aware that verily all men, including the wealthy, like "free" also, as it is so evident since you are obviously at many of these "free candy" events yourself! But take note...many will come and take your candy, and still, VOTE NO TO THE LEVY!!!RedRider1;1456286 wrote:People currently seeking jobs are able to get those prime seats for the free candy & therefore is unfair and the parade should be ended due to that unfairness.

You can start the petition, but yours and maybe a couple of your "buds" on here will more likely than not be the only signatures on it. The long standing "lost" tradition that you hint at wouldn't be supported by the schools most generous private funding source, so you may as well let that nonsense go! -

How does pointing out that people are poorer than 10 years ago help you achieve the goal of getting a levy passed?RedRider1;1456516 wrote:To ignore the shift in demographics (that I proved with facts, not assumptions) in our town doesn't make it any less true.
Playing demographic blame games only divide, they never unite.
If you want to pass a levy, it would be prudent to attempt to unite people
This is true in many districts, even ones that passed levies.RedRider1;1456516 wrote:High paying jobs are gone & a once strong middle class has been declining for the last decade.
And you can point that out all day long. How has that approach done so far?RedRider1;1456516 wrote:Not trying to be mean spirited, but there are factors that have us in this situation..,,and the socioeconomic piece is a significant one.
None of us has the answers to our funding problems (at least I don't) I'm not going to engage in a counterproductive battle of words with you. We clearly have different opinions. -
rrfanSeries did you create a new name as The Wizard? I have a feeling neither of you are "poor" so tell us why you are against the levy?

sanitizerWith all this being said..... I STILL LIKE CANDY! I remember Jimmy "juice" managed to mysteriously come with with the Oak Street school lunch money out of the cash drawer? He almost closed out the bait shop! We had penny bubble gum and snicker bars for DAYS!!!! I still laugh thinking about her taking all that money!!!! Jimmy was so proud!!!
And eating tile plant fish is why my immune system is bullet proof!!!
BUT on a serious note, I am saddened by the problems facing the Ville and many towns like it throughout Ohio. I guess I want my little town to stay the gem it always seemed to be to me as a youngster. It will be interesting to see how these debates and "spirited" discussion will or will not influence this years football team. I guess on a football thread that will be a legitimate trend to watch as the summer progresses.
And one more thing..... Wooster still stinks! LOL, I had to! -

The best was watching her count out the dozen nightcrawlers and then reach right into the sour patch kid container never even considering the worm bedding/guts/slime on her hands. As for the football season...just hope that we have a QB, because if Luke Smith doesn't play...we have ZERO! -

I'm not The Wizard, I do however agree with his conversation, especially post #304.rrfan;1456547 wrote:Series did you create a new name as The Wizard? I have a feeling neither of you are "poor" so tell us why you are against the levy?
Many people have lost jobs and their livelihood, for some, it's difficult to recover from that. It doesn't necessarily equate to "they don't want to work".
I can't speak for "Wizard", however, no, I'm not poor, nor am I wealthy, my wife and I need to work to maintain the little we have and to prepare for retirement. We support the community by paying our taxes, and buying here! Am I against the levy...let's just say with the ever increasing cost of fuel, energy food, etc, etc, I don't need nor want any additional taxes and my property taxes are high enough, which through my property taxes, I pay plenty to support the schools.
I've also experienced layoffs and downsizing, I've had my workload doubled because of it without any increase in pay. I gathered myself together, performed my job without complaint and thanking God that I still had employment. So, maybe some teachers will have to deal with that. I'm told that "adversity builds character"!
It seems to me that some of the teachers that stepped down had retirement as an option and people like brf are more likely than not doing just as well or better financially in retirement. At least they have an income! -

How good was Smith at QB? Is he a sophomore or junior this year? Do you wonder if Short was given a fair opportunity last year that he might still be here? Maybe Smith saw that and said "poor pass blocking, running backs bailing out, concussions imminent, forget that noise"! LOL!!!Old Rider;1456570 wrote:...As for the football season...just hope that we have a QB, because if Luke Smith doesn't play...we have ZERO! -

He is average and will be a soph. Does not give us near the run option that Bryce would have. I don't know why or what triggered the Short family's decision to move, so I have no comment. I certainly thought he was our BEST option at QB last year and should have saw more time earlier in the season. So if that is the reason he is leaving for McK...then I guess Donald is doing what any father should do...and that is look out for your kids and make decisions that will put them in a better situation to succeed as a student/athlete. I think he will have a tough time at McK, but then again maybe he will play bball only???I would agree with your last statement and expand by saying I think there are kids and parents thinking about injuries/concussions and that too has contributed to low numbers from jr.high on up.Series62;1456583 wrote:How good was Smith at QB? If they've done nothing else at McK, they've got him in the weight room and I see some results.Old Rider;1456611 wrote:He is average and will be a soph. I believe that if they have to start fresh with a qb, and seemingly with the entire football team, you'll find out the strength of your coaching staff as it sounds as if they're going to be starting from the ground and will have to an extent, build a program. Time will tell. -
rrfan
Thank god that McK has a weight room...I sure wish Orrville did! Short got a fair shot at QB last year and he was not very good. If he is "a running QB" he would not have made it through a single game without getting hurt. I wish him luck at McK because he will need it to see any time.Series62;1456653 wrote:If they've done nothing else at McK, they've got him in the weight room and I see some results.

You act like the teachers have not been going through the downsizing and more work load. It has been going on for years in order to try and keep from going to the tax payer for more money.Series62;1456578 wrote:I'm not The Wizard, I do however agree with his conversation, especially post #304.

The tired old stereotype that they get "3 months off" in the summer & work from 8am to 3:30pm every day (never nights or weekends)....and have aides do all their work while they gossip in the lounge. All the while collecting fat pay & Cadillac benefits.
People see teachers as a group who have had it pretty good and are using this vote as a way to knock them down a peg because they're "successful."
Saw a bumper sticker that said "if you choose not to fund schools, you'll have to choose to fund prisons."
I'd like that spirit that our President talks about...of people paying their fair share, to apply to schools. Isn't paying a "little more" worth it for our kids? Or is that only applicable when talking about taxing the rich? -
RedRider1And series, I've never been to the bunny trail....and my kids will never dart in front of cars for free candy...I'd rather them keep their dignity and spend a dollar to buy it at Buehlers.
I've worked the downtown holiday event...it's rarely people that you see patronizing downtown businesses any other day of the year, but give away hot dogs & popcorn & they're all over it. Doesn't help those downtown businesses a lick though.
Need much more "we" & a lot less "me" in society in general right now.
At the end of the day, we'll get the schools we deserve. How sad that we'll have these beautiful new buildings but bare bones services to offer. -

losing their dignity , come on that's a little tough .I've seen children from all types of families regardless of income enjoying getting that free candy . you talk about tradition in Orrville . well that's a tradition, the free candy at the parade. I think the only people worried about them losing dignity is the parents. on a serious note I sure hope we get a win on our turf this year. RR1 are there any other teams that we play down this year .RedRider1;1456807 wrote:And series, I've never been to the bunny trail....and my kids will never dart in front of cars for free candy...I'd rather them keep their dignity and spend a dollar to buy it at Buehlers.
