2013 Orrville Red Riders football

Before you start saying it was because we were 1-9 last yer it wasn't much better in 2011. The average citizen there could care less! The youth there don idolize the players like we used to growing up. Most of them probably don't even go to the games. That's what I have seen-less than 100 people for away games? Sad really it definitely is not what it used to be-tradition? No that many people care and it shows!

I wouldn't argue there. Need more families willing to be involved..to coach, to volunteer, to lend their time.

It does seem to be about following a winner. Nobody wants to drive to Ashland to see us get drubbed. But when we were playing in the state semifinals against Poland in 1999, I swear we filled the entire home side of Fawcett Stadium.

Got a peek at the roster today...about 35 boys in 10th - 12th grades. And that's assuming a few upperclassmen that have said they're going to play actually do. A few always seem to drop off during the summer or move away.

We'll be lucky to have 40 kids and that's including dressing ALL freshmen.

Anyone "on the fence" does not have the right makeup to play as a Red Rider!

Right but sounds like few on this team have the "right makeup"

What will I do without you CC??

Oh, I'll still pop-in and keep an eye on things. I just won't be able to hit many Wooster games this year and see first-hand how things are playing out. I have a feeling I'll definitely be at more Avon Lake games starting this fall. I'll always be there for the Wooster/Orrville game though....so you're not totally free of me!

Saw in The Daily Record where the Orrville volleyball coach stepped down. Things are really starting to get rough over there...

The VB coach stepped down to get back in the district she grew up in...I think. Nothing related to the levy, but we are losing a good coach. However, I think Erin Short (played VB at Indiana U.) works for the schools as a sub and would be a GREAT fit!

Good to hear that you aren't completely vanishing...I enjoy the smack talk!

I think she is from Ann Arbor Michigan, Old Rider! I am just going off a couple of conversations I had with her, so not 100%.
  • BRF
She left because she wants to be teaching at the high school level and was being transferred to the middle school.

    But, back to football.

I hear some disturbing things about kids leaving and kids thinking about not going out.

In the "kids leaving" department.....I wish them well, but be careful what you wish for. Don't bite off more than you can chew........actually, I guess that comment should be directed more toward the parents.

Heard that our week 1 opponent sent our AD an email basically begging out of the game (that is already contracted). I think our stance is we'd let them out of the game but not before finding someone to take their place.

Old...that would be her older sister Erica Short. "Great fit"...I would agree!

Ann Arbor??? Now I know why I never liked her...even though I have never met her!

I heard Dyson is moving to Wooster, Ballinger and Kick are not coming out, Palmer may be moving to the Carolinas, Short to McK, and now I heard that Luke Smith is not sure if he is going to play...Orrville Football whats going on??

Series...yeah, either of them would be great.
  • CCRolly
What position does the Dyson kid play? Was he a RB?
  • rrfan
A bunch of kids that want there butts kissed to come out. Tired of it. Smith kid get your butt to work and get better. It will help you in every sport you play (get stronger, quicker, faster) win win.

Yes..if thats what you call that position in our system.

If Luke does not play...we have NO QB. I don't think he will get any butt kissing, but if I am a team member I am doing everything I can to convince him to play! It is going to be a circus no matter who plays the QB position, but if he doesn't play...it will be a full on Ringling Brothers and Barnum-Bailley show!

These kids need to drag around tow chains and be fed gun powder!!! Honestly hurts my heart to read all these posts..... Hard to realize my little town is going through such a hard time. A question to all you locals, are the powers that be working a plan or putting a plan in place to spread some information about the upcoming vote? What about one or even two sessions a week somplace where locals can come and ask quesitons about what they may not understand? IDK, it just seems like things won't get any better unless someone swings for the fences on getting people informed. As a father I don't care what my income level is, when it comes to my kids I would be interested. I just wouldn't want to stand by while a number of people may be voting the way they are out of not really understanding the levy. I would be doing everything I could to reach those people before the next vote. If not, well it looks like dark days ahead!

With that said I am so sick of the NBA playoffs, baseball...... I am SO ready to hear some pads cracking!!!! Snot bubbles, big eyes!!!!

    P.S.- Wooster SUCKS!!!! LOL!!!!! ;)

He was a RB. He was originally from Wooster and played here through 8th grade then went to Orrville. Would be great to have him back!

Any board member will tell you they've scheduled these types of meetings and nobody shows. I try to be connected to local issues and would definitely have my radar up for a meeting like this...but I think it's more of an issue of people NOT KNOWING these meeting are taking place. Needs to be announced in OrrViews, the DR & on WQKT. I don't think enough is being put out there for people to get involved. If they don't put info out there, and a renewal levy fails, they have no one to blame but themselves...after two 60/40 defeats, I'd hope the message is loud & clear that the community is not feeling a part of the process...just auto dialed & asked for their vote.
  • Old Rider
The people voting NO have their minds made up and I don't see how a meeting will sway them to voting YES. And the fact that both votes failed by such a large margin, thats a LOT of people to try and change their mindset. Retired folks and people without kids in the system will not vote for NEW money! Period! The board better come up with a gameplan more than just asking for your vote over the phone. The one event that comes to mind that brings out everyone in this town is the 4th of July parade...get signs on trucks, walk the route, pass out fliers/info, have students/teachers/admins walking. Have a presence and go BIG!

Renewal levy is about a 1-1/2 months away. So far nothing. I believe they have some work to do before that one and it seems to not be taking place.

I have heard the same from the handful of people I have talked to.

    LOVE the parade idea!!!

I just think if the levy is this important I would be doing something!!!!

It was 2-3 years ago and there was a pick-up truck in the parade with a HUGE homemade sign in the bed of the truck that said "VOTE NO Wooster City Schools Levy". I remember everyone around taking notice and commenting how brave it was for some random person to register for the parade just to voice their opinion. It caught a LOT of peoples attention and I think something similar(obviously Vote Yes), but on a larger scale would open the eyes of some people. Just a thought.

Something in the back of my mind tells me that after John Ritchie's son graduates next year, he will move on to another district and get out of this mess in Orrville and to a district/community that actually supports its schools. Ritchie is a great Supt. in my opinion and I can only imagine how much he "could do" if his hands weren't tied financially as they have been over the last several years!

I agree I could see Richie being gone in a year or two.

Old R...if you feel it's such a good idea, why don't you, rrfan and rr1 get together and do that "VOTE YES to the levy" sign on the truck at the 4th of July parade! It would surely be an opportunity for you all to put your money where your mouth is. Obviously, not that many people in town are reading this blog, and, you three, or however many supporters you all can garner, can all have bull horns and "talk" to the people as you have on here to encourage them to "VOTE YES".

rr1 can make a big poster displaying his demographic statistics and tell the "poor" (that will obviously line the streets of the parade in an effort to get "free" candy), how they are one of the primary reasons for the economic decline of our community and schools!

You can then have redrider555 to "drag tow chains" and brf to "eat gun powder" during the parade to encourage the kids to get on the football team!

...Yeah...that would be a sight to see! LOL!!!
