2013 Wayne County Athletic League Football

  With the playoff hunt ending for Norwayne, the season is officially at a close for the WCAL teams, so I thought I'd get next year's thread started.
  
  With Norwayne being 27-2 over the last two seasons, including two WCAL championships, one of which was outright, they still have to be the favorite next year. I'm curious to hear who else is going to be doing damage next year.
  
  Do Northwestern or Hillsdale bring a lot back next year or are they possibly victims of a large graduation hit?
  
  With Smithville in an odd position (decisively worse than the top three teams in the league this year, but also decisively better than the bottom four), will they move up or down to any degree?
  
  With Dalton's young squad now having two years of experience under their belt, should we be watching for a better record from the Bulldogs next year?
  
  Should we see any fluctuation out of Chippewa, Rittman, or Waynedale next year? Any of them going to surprise someone?
  
  Thoughts?

  Hillsdale loses quite a few players to graduation, but they return one of the better running backs in the league in Mager. The program may also take a small hit with the failure of the levy enforcing a $300 pay-to-play fee for each kid and each sport. Northwestern, however, returns a strong nucleus of players from a team that made it to the playoffs this year. The most notable of those returners being Noletti.
  
  Norwayne certainly has to be the favorites heading into next year, and Dreher certainly looks like a POY candidate.

  As a Norwayne fan I can't wait to see what dreher and the WR group he has coming back with him can do. It will be very interesting. Maxwell at RB should be a good enough to keep teams honest. Defense has enough returners to get the job done
  
  Northwestern will be tough and grown up enough to want some week 10 and 11 revenge
  
  Can't ever count out what the other 6 teams will round up.

  Norwayne has to be a big favorite again.
  
  Northwestern lost some people but Noletti & Smith are both back. Maybe they can even challenge Norwayne next year....but probably not is more likely.
  
  Hillsdale still has some ammo....and the best coach in the league.
  
  Smithville loses Bates. Not sure about the rest (Buss, Shane, etc.) Anything can happen in the Emerald empire (just ask Keith Schrock)
  
  Dalton should be better. Almost everyone returns and the coaching looks sound. Fix the execution issues at several positions and the Dawgs could be a dark horse.
  
  Waynedale...start a thread, hire a therapist and avoid Apple Creek until the civil war subsides.
  
  Rittman...another year of Bill Dennis, not much else needs said.
  
  Chippewa...get the forks out...so they'll be ready to stick in at the appropriate time (I'm thinking week 3)

  Maltarich definitely deserves credit - for turning the Norwayne program around and following it up with the success he's having at WH. That said, Harbour is 36-5 in 3 years with a semi-final appearance following a state championship.

  I don't think anyone is saying Harbour deserves NONE of the credit, but let's be honest: The guy came into a pretty sweet deal. Thus far, he hasn't really had to face any real adversity, which is when a coach's holes start to show.
  
  Again, I think he's a VERY good coach, but I'd agree that Williams has the nod over him. Besancon has had experience turning programs around at other schools, but we definitely haven't seen enough of him yet in the House that Keith Built to make an informed opinion.
  
  Of course, I hope he reflects his former mentor in the coming years.

  Harbour is a great coach, it doesn't get any better than winning a state title. He also deserves kudos for using schemes that play to his players strengths. Otrap is spot on about the adversity side of things though. When he arrived the cupboard was stalked and community members and Maltarich already had the feeder system up and rolling.
  If Harbour stays around for another 5 years and keeps the Norwayne express piling up wins, it will be hard to argue he's not the best coach.
  
  I gave Williams the nod because Hillsdale rose up out of complete and utter ruin under his tutelage. The Falcons were absolutely terrible for decades. He was faced with building a program to respectability, changing a culture of losing, and getting rid of those gay blue uniforms before moving into being a contender.
  
  
  Another candidate that isn't far behind in the "great coach" conversation is Thut. He did a rebuild job on the perennially pathetic Huskies and has taken 2 different eras of kids to week 11...(almost 3, the 2001 huskies narrowly missed the playoffs)
  
  Bescancon is another guy who seems to have a knack for taking turds and sculpting them into diamonds. All the shenanigans surrounding the Schrock ouster may have affected perceptions of him and even slowed the team development last year. Even with that baggage, a team he coaches shouldn't be taken lightly.
  
  Doty will soon be on the hot seat if Dalton doesn't start looking like the teams of old. It's a shame too, because he should have been the one to enjoy the Billker year. That year of playoff success is crucial for a guy in Dotys shoes. Dalton is a small district in an era where soccer, cross country and even golf are competing for a very limited pool of kids. Combine that with the growth of the Northern WCAL schools and you have a recipe for built in disadvantage.
  
  The other 3 coaches.....well,
  I'm staying out of the Apple Creek fray....they have enough a-holes with strong opinions, I'm not needed.
  
  Billy Boy and Rittman....my opinion is so offensive, vulgarity and tasteless pics are needed to properly express it.

  Given that profanity is a no-no here, I'm not sure an accurate representation of 1_beast's opinion on Z in possible.

  I know it's not football season but lets expand this conversation a little. What has happened at Norwayne recently really had very little to do with Maltaraich. From what I here he has gotten way too much credit when it comes to Norwayne's recent success. From what i hear he had little to do with the youth program and even was against kids playing tackle football too early. My friends say he was rarely seen at youth games. Disconnected was the word they used. The media created that connection. He didnt coach any of this years kids and had little impact on last years seniors. That aside I think we need to give Harbour credit for at least one thing. He put his kids in the right system. I dont think anyone can argue with that. The spread offense has turned the WCAL on it's ear. They have been incredible over the last 2 years. The unfortunate thing is, I dont think they'll be able to continue it for long. I think they will have success next year but not at the level they have had over the past 2 years....I hope I'm wrong. I like being on top. We are going to see what Harbour and his staff are made out of over the next couple years. Everyone knew that the 2 classes that just graduated were loaded. They had been talking about it for years. They are losing 3- 1st Team All-Ohio players, 2 - 2nd teamers and an honarable mention lineman. 8 or 9 starters on defense and some of the best offensive players in area history. How do you possible replace those guys? Dreher is back with alot less talent around him. He was sensational this year but will he flourish without Berger, Mitch K, Smith and John Zimmerly? Zimmerly was one of the best the area had ever seen. Mitch K and Richie Smith were as good as anybody in the area and no where near as good as Berger. Maybe the best WR ever in Wayne County. Croftcheck, Scruggs and Barb gone off the line! That's just on offense. 2013 will finally tell us what Harbour is worth. Good luck to the Cats but I'm not nearly as optimistic. You cant stay on top forever

  These were all very good players for sure, but...classifying some of them as possibly the best ever in Wayne County? The receivers definitely benefitted from being in their pass-happy system and the RB had a great OL opening some major holes every week. I have seen better in both cases. I watched Berger drop 3 passes in their final defeat and there have been alot of receivers in the area with better speed. Again, great players but not the best ever.

  Maybe Bobcat went a little overboard in making his point, but what he said about some of those players is valid. He never said "Player X is hands down the best the county has ever seen at Y position." He just said "maybe" and "one of the best." I'm not qualified to judge all that history, but Zimmerly and Berger (and Wallace) have to be in the conversation. Saying that Zimmerly had some major holes to run through does not accurately sum up his career. He rushed for a ton of yards in a "pass-happy system" with a hamstring problem part of the year. He broke tackles and ankles when there were no holes and made huge blocks. He was a beast on defense as well. Berger dropping a few passes in that last game doesn't cancel out the monster receiving year he had and the contributions he made in the previous year in big games on both sides of the ball. If Norwayne's two year run was at least among the best in county history then some of those players should be at least considered as "among the best" in county history. They were better than "very good players."
