The Doug Haas era @ Wooster

It's the kids' defense mechanism to the losing. I don't think anybody likes losing and kids react differently. And I do hope that this has been a valuable learning year for coach. He now knows what he has and hopefully has a plan to take it to the next level.
The persistent problem I see, though, is a continuing lack of toughness. Whether it be on the field or mom calling coach to gripe about something. At some point Coach Haas has to tell these kids to grow a pair, and for parents to shut up. It's his team. Only worry there is will the AD support him. The more I hear about the AD, the less impressed I am.
My high point for Woo football this week was seeing Juice Massaro and the 8th grade squad's fight. Woo's big center/team captain got drilled in the back by an Ashland kid way after the whistle. He was the only kid I saw block anybody the whole game, so half of me wonders if it wasn't planned. He got up and the kid then takes a jab at him. After that, it looked like Ali-Frazier. It was on. Good for him. Fists were flying. Bring him up to dress with the varsity squad next week as a reward! They've had two ejections in three weeks. I've got no problem with that at all. Of course, the head coach was yelling at the kid "why didn't you just take the 15 yards on the late hit?!". jeez.. And I didn't see one kid come to their captain's defense. I've got a problem with that. We wonder what's wrong on Friday nights..sissies are being created much earlier in the program. At least I saw Juice give the kid a big hug on the sidelines after he got him calmed down. I'm sure he won't be invited back to coach next year.
awesome....condone fighting. thats your pride?scarface1;1295052 wrote:As far as the fight at 8th grade game not cool when kids get ejected, agree we need to be more agressive footbal players but there is a fine line between agressive and stupid and it sounds like we crossed it a couple of times.
scarface1;1295430 wrote:Oh i agree it has been rough with the change in coaches. There are way more turnovers than i have ever seen from a Wooster team. A lot of this has to do with young quarterback and new system. I think I told everyone last year when they ran Mccreary out of town to be carefull what you ask for. Not saying the change wont be good in the long run but if anyone from Wooster thought this group would go from 4-6 to a playoff team were very wrong. To change a program like we did it will take a couple years to get averyone on the same page. The worst thing about that is the seniors and juniors are the ones that are going to suffer the most. 90% of this team are the same starters as last year the only difference are QB and a break away threat at running back so the talent is roughly the same as last and the results are also. Feel bad for those seniors going out but hopefully this year will be a learning experience for the program and the new coach and Wooster will come out better off in the long run.
you are better off with the new coach
you should beat orrville,,,,for the last 30 yearsscarface1;1295995 wrote:You are right Rolly if they can beat orrville it will definitely take some of the sting out of a tough year. No way he should play against Orrville next week. As I have said before we have about five seniors who even give an effort. The senior who went home with mom and dad was prancing around after a five yard catch like we were winning by 43 instead of losing by 43. Then another senior after game was more worried about the weather next week than the way we lost the game. This performance is not acceptable and should not be tolerated by this coaching staff. Haas should start the seniors who care and sit the rest I know this wont happen but it definitely would send a message to the team for next year. With all this being said I hope we come out with a much better effort next week and get a win against Orrville GO WOO!!!! -

My son took it in stride...last play of the 1st half...WH is up 22-0. Wooster player has him engaged and drives him downfield on a block and plants him on his backside. Woo player says "You're playin' with the big boys now"....my sons replies..."Nice sledge hammer" and "you guys are pretty good for 2-6".scarface1;1299293 wrote:Dont know what to say about Wooster tonight. That is what i have been saying for three years now no matter what these coaches do they cant win, last year McCreary and the seniors on team ran number #3 off team and he was run off as a freshman and did not even play as sophomore. Yet he starts this year after not showing up to offseason workouts or clinics with new coaching staff. I know he is a hell of a talent but this is not giving the guys that show up and put in work agood example to go by. I know every junior that was on team this year made it to all offseason workouts and lifting even if they were involved in spring sports. The senior captains seem to be the only four still playing with some pride I do hope this can carry us to a victory on saturday night.jaco;1299318 wrote:The sad truth, scarface, is that many of these kids are used to losing and have grown to accept it. Thats what defines a "culture of losing". There needs to be accountability, bu im afraid coach has compromised himself in order to get these "athletes" on the team. Case in point, the sophomore who joined the team two weeks ago and is now starting. Those sorts of kids are cancers. If youre gonna lose anyway, lose with character and send a message, not with clowns. What exactly is the message youre sending your freshmen and sophomores? -

That is the problem we have here 300 these kids, cant play as team and they cant out athletic teams like they could when they were younger hopefully Haas can change that culture around here. By the way 300 your team reminds me a lot of the Wooster teams in mid 80's line up hit them in mouth and let play speak for itself. Good luck rest of the year you have a very nice team in West Holmes.Mr. 300;1299369 wrote:My son took it in stride...last play of the 1st half...WH is up 22-0. jacoFunny you say that, scarface, about them not playing as a team because that fact just jumps out at me too. Its weird. Never seen anything like it. Talented kids who play like they just came out for football a week ago. And I know theyve been practicing together for months but you'd never know it. Theyre athletes, not football players. Big difference. And the sledge..that can go away. These kids need some humility. There are times, though, i think they could use it since it might be the only way of getting a defensive stop.

I've been saying this all year and all you have to do is look at other teams we play. Only one team in OCC has the athletes we do and thats Mansfield Senior. The other teams play real good team football we better learn this fast or next year could be just as bad.jaco;1299400 wrote:Funny you say that, scarface, about them not playing as a team because that fact just jumps out at me too. gohardorgohomefirst of all, i have been around this program longer than any of you. you guys have no idea what really goes on inside of that locker room or on saturday mornings during film session. the fact that the supposed amazing junior class and jv team means nothing. if they were so good they would be playing on friday nights. the post by scarface about players working out in the off season and what not means nothing. they workout to get better themselves, not to earn a starting spot on friday night. regardless of the situation, the best will be in every position. if you have a son on the team but not on friday nights then he isn't good enough. its that simple.

never said most talented kids arent playing on friday nights just said talent doesn't always equate to a good football player and obviously the kids playing friday night are not as good as they think or they would have way more wins than they do. And by the way unless you have been around the program for thirty five years or more dont think you've been around longer than me or other people around town. At some point the players have to become accountable for the play on the field, or lack there of.gohardorgohome;1300095 wrote:first of all, i have been around this program longer than any of you. you guys have no idea what really goes on inside of that locker room or on saturday mornings during film session. the fact that the supposed amazing junior class and jv team means nothing. if they were so good they would be playing on friday nights. the post by scarface about players working out in the off season and what not means nothing. they workout to get better themselves, not to earn a starting spot on friday night. regardless of the situation, the best will be in every position. if you have a son on the team but not on friday nights then he isn't good enough. its that simple. -

Lets not start this again its the same kids as last year. Same talent level. New coach was to make team better. Thats all i heard last year one constant is players sorry but that is the truth until attitudes change noting will.frustrated fan;1300161 wrote:I'm just wondering if anyone one feels the coaches should be held accountable? -
frustrated fanThen I guess you are saying they shouldn't be held accountable? I can't understand how you can completely blame the boys. Your sone must be a junior because those are the only players you don't rag on. I will be curios to see if its the coaches fault or the players next year if things look the same. Good luck to ALL the players that are wearing a Wooster jersey at the Orrville game. Whether you start or stand on the sidelines, be proud of the colors you are wearing!! I hope they end their season with pride!

jacoI'll be curious to see what coach does different, or the same, next season. First year is obviously a learning experience. I dont want to dog any one kid or class. It's a team sport and those kids work hard. But i would not have guessed this team to have only two wins unless the sophomore QB struggled alot - and that wasnt the case. It's a head scratcher, for sure. Just too much talent for two wins. One thing i would like to see is more emphasis on basics..tackling, blocking, tackling.. Were a very poor tackling team.

As do i always hope kids play with pride and it is all players that need to step up but if coaches are to blame next in line is seniors who should step up and make everyone on this team accountable. As a senior player once, we would of never let any of our teamates act this way during losses wether it be seniors or juniors or sophomores. And I dont rag on all seniors just the ones that are standing out to me and a lot of fans who notice this stuff and if you read the whole thread you may notice that other fans from other schools notice this behavior also. With this said I will always support Wooster athletics .Win or lose it is just time for all kids to start becoming more accountable for acting and playing the game the right way it cant always be someone elses fault my kid included. If things look the same next year and we have players acting the way i seen after game friday night they will be called out also my kid included.frustrated fan;1300194 wrote:Then I guess you are saying they shouldn't be held accountable? You are right Jaco it is a team sport but there are way to many kids worried about who gets the touchdowns or press clippings on a 2 win team just not right. And a new coach needs more than one year to adjust to new kids.jaco;1300260 wrote:I'll be curious to see what coach does different, or the same, next season. scarface1As far as the jv team goes i would like to say one thing. They may be second teir players but their record over last two years is 15-2. that is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but this group has learned to at least play as a team. No these guys may noy have the athletic talent of the varsity players but they do play as a team. If these guys are not good enough for friday nights like gohardorgohome said then that means every team on our schedule except two have better talent than us and i do not believe this for a minute.

CCRollyThe fact of the matter is this, Wooster football team has one week left to "salvage" another losing season. A win over Orrville (finally) would make another losing season a little more tolerable. Something does need done to change the losing mentality that surrounds this team, a culture change. I think Haas can do it, but unfortunately for the program, it will truly be addition by subtraction as far as this senior class goes. Not quite sure what it's going to take to get more of the kids focused and committed to the off-season program, but until that dedication is found, we're going to end up with the same result year-after-year. Here's hoping that the Generals will come out and find a way to play their most complete game of year against Orrville next Saturday....Go Woo!

jacoMy greatest wish regarding West Holmes and Millersburg is that those people would just stay down there. Don't drive up to our restaurants, stores, theaters...just stay in the hills.
Should be a competitive game Saturday night. This one game is basically the entire season for two groups of seniors. Certainly not the season either team hoped for, but ending on a win is always a heck of alot better than going into the off season on a sour note. -

and that's a losing attitude. JV is crucial to developing a team. Many stars on Friday nights and key players were once, i know it's hard to believe, good JV football players. They may not quite be ready yet, whether they need to get stronger, bigger, or they just aren't mentally ready yet. Some of the best players on friday nights have been playing football since they are young, but don't start on Friday nights until their junior and sometimes senior years. That is why there is JV. It's not there to throw the "bad" players on. It's there to develop kids.gohardorgohome;1300095 wrote:first of all, i have been around this program longer than any of you. you guys have no idea what really goes on inside of that locker room or on saturday mornings during film session. the fact that the supposed amazing junior class and jv team means nothing. if they were so good they would be playing on friday nights. the post by scarface about players working out in the off season and what not means nothing. they workout to get better themselves, not to earn a starting spot on friday night. regardless of the situation, the best will be in every position. if you have a son on the team but not on friday nights then he isn't good enough. its that simple. -

scarface1Rolly there is one thing in your post that isnt quite right. The senior captains on this team and one other starter give it everything they got each game. They should not be lumped in with the few I have been critical of, but you are right about the losing attitude just hard for a few guys to change it. And with that I am done with the senior talk. I wish them all the luck in the world Saturday night and hope they do something we couldnt do the few years i played and that is beat Orrville.
