Exactly! Also, it should be point and counterpoint which my post was.

The reason I'm unhappy with Big Red's schedule is because it costs me around $500 to come home to see one Big Red game, and I don't like paying that kind of money just to see BR get a huge lead in the second quarter and then spend the rest of the game clearing the bench. I want Big Red to win, of course, but I would rather see a barn-burner occasionally. I know we have to have some breathers, but I don't think we need that many. I also realize that some teams that were supposed to be competitive turned out not to be (Morgantown, for example).

At any rate, I will continue to support Big Red football whether I'm happy with the schedule or not.
  • ManO'War
So you would like to spend $500 to fly in and see Big Red lose??

This isn't fantasy land where you get to decide the outcome of games. That is the chance you take. You never know what teams will be good from year to year. I flew in from Florida in 2001 for the opener vs Baltimore Mt St Joes....guess what? It was a great game, but they beat us. I would have much preferred a Big Red blow out victory than a loss in the final seconds on the 1/2 yard line.
  • GoChiefs
I'm pretty sure he's saying he wants to see them win a competitive game. Not a loss.
  • 4cards
    ...I agree GoChiefs.

FK wants to get the best bang for his buck and if that would happen to be a Massillon vs Steubenville matchup then so be it. Both teams reload every year, so IMO schedule your visit each year around that game.

But there is no way of knowing that.

Last year one of the most competitive games was Baltimore Mt St Joes...but they are from Maryland so they don't get a lot of hype. Buchtel was also a pretty good game, but according to FWK they are just a "flash in the pan", lol.

Ursuline was a great game, but it was away, so it doesn't fit his criteria either. Massillon is away this coming year, so there goes that game!

What makes games special is that you don't know if it is going to be a competitive game or a blow out by one side or the other. Some of Big Red's best games were the ones that came out of nowhere and became instant classics.

Although I prefer seeing games in Harding Stadium, I do attend away games. I went to Massillon and Pittsburgh two years ago.

I still say Buchtel is a flash in the pan. They are not consistent. They were state runners-up two years ago and then failed to make the playoffs last year. They lost to every good team on their schedule. True, they can be competitive when they want to be, but I still put them in the category of teams we should beat.

you lost that bet . I dont exactly know what a flash in the pan means ,but it sounds like a team that comes out of nowhere and has a great year . Or a fluke team . Akron Buhctel has been pretty consistant over the years and even made the state semis a few years ago and we had to beat them twice in the same year . That desription does not apply to them . You have to give them more than that and they still got two titles against us.
  • FairwoodKing
Are we even going to play Buchtel this year? I heard the rumor that they will be Week 10, but I haven't had that confirmed.

I remember the Kentucky Trinity Team that played us. They led off the season here and some boosters stated "another patsy". They stomped us pretty good 2 seasons in a row.
A lot of these out of state teams we have played featured future Pro Footbal Hall of Famers like Jack Tatum, Joey Galloway ( played 3 games against us ), lance Meil (sic) linebacker for the N.Y Jets, etc.
My point being, these games are almost always enjoyable in some aspects.
    Cheers,;)

Does anybody remember why we played Louisville Trinity in 1969? We had a 2-year contract to open the season in Steubenville with Toledo Scott. Scott came in 1968 and we beat them. After the game, the football mothers served the Scott team a spaghetti dinner as they always did for visiting teams. Instead of eating the food like gentlemen, they had a food fight. To sum it up, they completely wrecked Harding School cafeteria. The Big Red officials were furious. They not only cancelled the second year of the contract, but they send Scott a bill for the damages. That meant we had to find a replacement for Scott in the opening game in 1969 and it had to be a team that was willing to travel to Steubenville. Signing up Trinity was a last resort. Big Red had a good team in 1969 (7-2-1, the tie being Massillon), but Trinity still beat us 21-8. That's the only time we ever played them in any sport.

What were the high schools that these guys played for? I know Roosevelt played for Buffalo St. Joe's, but I don't know the rest.

We never sent Toledo a bill for the damages; the team doctor appologized and paid those damages: the most serious was the urinals torn from the wall.
I will say this: many fans agreed Toledo was hosed in that game.
    Cheers!

You are correct; we did only play them once; I guess I'll have to check my records better before I post. I remember that they ran from and to the huddle on all plays. They were very well disciplined and had white athletic socks with a green shamrock on each side. Their uniforms looked new.
    Cheers!

In the Massillon tie, Massillon thought they scored toward the end of the game but was called for too many men on the line. The massillon fans went nuts but the flag was clearly dropped before the play was snapped.

The thing I think we all need to realize is that the schedule is made for the purpose of making the team better and not for our enjoyment. I drive 1 1/2 to 2 hours for most games, and even farther for playoffs since I live north of Pittsburgh. Driving that far, I would love for every game to be a competitive game against quality competition. However, I know this is unrealistic. The schedule is made to best prepare our team to succeed in the playoffs. Given the success Big Red has had in the last 10 years, I don't think anyone can complain about the end results. In the end I trust our coaching staff and athletic director to make the best decisions possible when it comes to scheduling. I am not saying that every decision they have made has been perfect. However, I am in no place to criticize anything about Big Red's program considering the success they have had and the enjoyment they have given me. Trust our coaching staff to make the right decisions. I think they have earned that.

Vernon Davis and Arrelious Benn both went to DC Dunbar. Josh Cribbs and Vontae Davis also went to DC Dunbar but I don't think we played them while they were there. Keon Lattimore went to Baltimore St. Joes. Lattimore is the younger brother of Ray Lewis.

^^^^ Id have to say that the schedule is made for the fans enjoyment every bit as much as making our team better . We never schedule all cup cakes and we never schedule all local . Nowadays you can go 5-5 and make the playoffs ,but before the playoff era you had to schedule a meat grinder if you wanted state .
    cheers
  • chrisv160
I didn't necessarily mean that none of the schedule is made for our enjoyment or that the schedule isn't enjoyable. I think we as a whole get plenty of enjoyment out of our schedule. And of course we aren't playing 10 cupcakes. Sure, playing 10 cupcakes MIGHT get Big Red in the playoffs but its not going to make the team better. On the opposite end, we could play 10 stud teams but it might beat our kids up before the playoffs. I think there needs to be a healthy balance of tough games, winnable games, questionable games, and local games. I think our coaches do a great job with that. I just happen to think the number one concern is getting the team better and ready for the post season.

I agree with you completely. Some have to realize that some years Reno may call over 200 teams to fill a schedule; things don't always work out to the satisfaction of the fans. It just doesn't seem to sink in with some of these posters that Big Red Is a division 3 School with average depth. Reno and his staff do an excellent job with average size kids.
    Cheers

And it takes two to tango. Last year Reno mentioned on several occasions that he thought that Akron St Vincent St Mary was a go for game 3, but then they changed their mind at the last minute and we ended up with Bishop Ryan Ontario out of desperation to have 10 games.

Also, we are not realistically going to travel too far and have out team and fans (the ones that do make the trek) arrive home in the wee hours of the night. From past experience it seems that Columbus is about the limit to the west...Akron to the northwest...Warren to the north....and Zanesville to the south. The few times we have went farther (Mansfiled, Chardon, Chillicothe) were really long trips and we didn't bring that many fans. I'm curious to see how many will go to Morgantown this coming year. At least it is all 4 lane highway though.

I'll be going but not sure about that 4 lane highway thing unless you go up to Robinson to get to 79.
  • chrisv160
Well anyone that does make the trip to Morgantown is welcome to join me in Waynesburg for drinks. I lived in Waynesburg for the past 7 years and just recently moved away. I was looking forward to this game because it would have been basically in my back yard lol.

7 to 70 to 79...all 4 lanes unless some rock slides close a lane on route 7.

Personally I always take the back way to Washington...it's a lot quicker.
