Steubenville Big Red 2012 schedule

If game 9 is not St. Joe's or P South, then it's hard to tell where the team will come from. I'm only sure of one thing-- we will play that week. Reno will get a team from somewhere.

Ah, go ahead and tell us. We won't tell anyone.

How many starters does Big Red have coming back from last year? I imagine there are quite a few.
  • FairwoodKing
How many juniors will be starting for us this year? Two years ago we had a blockbuster freshman team. I imagine this year's varsity team will be young but very good.

Now we know the whole schedule except for game 9. I'm guessing it will be a PA team. Here it is April already. We better find a team pretty soon.
  • Sykotyk
I doubt PA. The WPIAL is in the heart of their league schedule that the league sets. Even the Pittsburgh City League would be in their league schedule at the time. Northwest PA (District 10) even uses a league schedule format akin to the WPIAL now and to squeeze something in their Week 8 would be tough.

Then what do you think about bringing someone down from Michigan?
  • Sykotyk
Not too familiar with Michigan. The Inkster situation was an anomaly.

Week 9 is tough. Only 'nearby' team that could be is if the Pittsburgh City League has an odd-number of teams this year and the open team that week wants to play. Otherwise, it's finding an Ohio independent with that week open.
  • FairwoodKing
Inkster is very up and down. The first time they played us, they were Michigan state runner-ups. The next year they only won about two games. They would be better than nobody.

I now think that our ninth game will come from somewhere outside of the Tri-State area. We've never played a team from Virginia or New Jersey (although Don Bosco has played in our stadium). Maybe this will be the year.

I just heard today that the 9th spot will be filled with a team from W.Va. He couldn't pronounce the name.
    Cheers!

Wouldn't it be something if we ended up with nine games. That hasn't happened since the 1930's. I certainly hope that Big Red finds someone for that week.
  • Sykotyk
They'll find somebody. It's still not _that_ late in the off season to find a team to play a one-off if the deal is right for them. I wonder if any of the other Pittsburgh City League teams are off that week in need of an opponent.
  • FairwoodKing
It's getting awfully late to find somebody. I think we will end up with a 9-game schedule.
  • bigred_dad
hey MOW, What happened to that team you heard we were playing, have you heard anything else?
  • FairwoodKing
Another week has gone by and we don't have the ninth week filled. I am beginning to lose faith that we will get that game.
  • FairwoodKing
Well, there are two surprises for me. First, we got a game. Secondly, it is from Canada. I thought it would be too late in the season for a Canadian team to want to play us.

That Canadian team will have to make one of the longest drives any team has ever had to make to Steubenville for a game. As the crow flies, it's only 164 miles from London to Steubenville. But by bus it's almost exactly 400 miles. I think the only team that ever came farther was Mooseheart, IL, and I'm not even sure about that. Under any circumstances, Mooseheart came by train. Let's be nice to our Canadian guests and let them score a touchdown.

"Lets be nice to our Canadian guests and let them score a touchdown"... Fairwood, you're being too kind...

I just feel sorry for this team. They are going to drive 800 miles to be soundly beaten. I will root for them and hope they score a touchdown or two. And if I'm in the stadium, I will loudly and proudly sing "O Canada." I think those players will learn a little bit about American culture. The very fact that they will be playing in front of 5000 people will be a culture shock.

Why waste time and schedule a crappy team like this? No pitiful Ohio team would come to Harding Stadium to get the big $$$? Better off holding an inter squad scrimmage.
