So far it looks like this...according to various sources.

    1. ?
    2. Buchtel
    3. @ East Liverpool
    4. Brooke
    5. ?
    6. Balt Mt St Joes
    7. Ursuline
    8. @ Morgantown
    9. ?
    10. ?

The only opening for @ Massillon would be week 5. 9 and 10 could be the Buffalos.

Week 1 is the OVAC Kickoff night
I understand East Liverpool dropped us.

I heard they wanted to, but it's still listing the game on their schedule.

I'm starting to wonder why there aren't early termination clauses in high school game contracts.
  • ManO'War
There usually is a dollar buyout.

East Liverpool is exactly the kind of team we should not be playing. They don't win any games so we don't get any computer points. And we play them home and home, so every other year we don't make any money. Even when it's our turn to host, they don't bring many fans. And when it's our turn to visit, it's usually raining and the field turns into a quagmire. All in all, I hope they do drop us.

"Even when its our turn to host,,they don't bring many fans". Why do you care? You make 20 grand a home game anyway...remember?

You're wrong. We make a minimum of $20K per home game. But we should make a great deal more when we play local teams. In EL's case, we don't. Besides, we play them home and home. When we play there, we only get expenses. That means on average, we only make $10K per game. If they were a good team that gave us some competition, I could see playing them. But we got practically no computer points for beating them last year. As a point of comparison, we made $20K and got a lot of Div. I points for beating Buffalo St. Joe's. It was also a competitive game, at least for the first half. The halftime score was only 22-20. They had the 8th-ranked qb in the country which gave us the chance to test our pass defense.

How many computer points do you get from Cardinal O'Hara?

More than we get from playing East Liverpool.

You sure about that? Cardinal O'Hara finished 1-8 in 2011.

So did East Liverpool win any games at all???

I believe EL beat Weir High for their only win of the season.

Big deal. Harding School could beat Weir.

If you want to tell Reno not to play O'Hara, you tell him. Two years ago I told him to drop Wheeling Park. He nearly took my head off. "Who we gonna play? Who we gonna play?" he kept yelling at me. When I said anyone, he started yelling some more.

No matter who we play, I wish football season would hurry up and get here. The fall is the only time of the year when my allergies don't bother me. I also like the cool weather after a hot summer. And, of course, there is Big Red football. I'm already planning to come home to see some games this year.

It's interesting that various people on these various blogs are saying that Big Red should play at Buffalo and DC and Baltimore if we are going to play these teams every year. I said the very same thing two years ago and got beaten up by just about everybody on these threads. I think we should play one really big away game every two years. Call school off and send the entire student body. Yes, it would cost a lot of money, but we have it. I especially would like to see Big Red play a team in DC. Leave after school on Thursday. Spend Friday touring the city and play the game on Saturday. It would be a better educational experience than anything they could learn from textbooks that day. The team could take a couple of hours off from sightseeing to practice. I myself went to Washington with the Big Red Band when I was in high school. Even the rowdiest kids in the band stood in quiet respect at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. The highlight of my trip was to watch the expressions on the faces of my fellow students. I had already been to DC, so I knew what to expect. But my friends hadn't been there and their reaction was remarkable.

We could also play one of the Buffalo teams if they could find a suitable stadium to hold the game. O'Hara and St. Joe's each has a stadium that holds about the same number of people as one of our end zones. The highlight of going to that game would be to see Niagara Falls. It is truly one of the great wonders of the world. They could go to the Canadian side and get the experience of being in a foreign country.

Going to Baltimore would also be great. They could see Fort McHenry where our National Anthem was written. I have never been there, so I would make it a point to fly home for that game.

I know you can tell me many reasons why this wouldn't work, but I think with careful planning, it could. It's just something to think about.

Are you going to pay for all of the passports?? At $125 per person..times about 70, that would add up quickly.

You can get passport cards that are a lot cheaper.

I'm not trying to be an ass by suggesting these things. It's just that I was very lucky. I had parents who took me to see all the sights on the east coast and Canada. They took me to the best restaurants and to symphony concerts. I grew up in a very cultured setting. Then I joined Holiday on Ice and toured extensively throughout Europe and South America. And in more recent years, I joined the Seattle Men's Chorus and toured thoughout the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. It is my great hope that the students of Big Red will have the chance to see some of the places I saw. The obvious method of doing this is through the football team. We have played teams from Buffalo, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Detroit, Louisville, Cincinnati, and more places than I can mention. I say we play one of these teams on the road every two years. That would give the school and the fans time to raise the money. The football team clears $200K a year. Some of that money could be used. This would give added value to the students' education. As I said before, I went to DC to march in the Presidential Inaugural Parade with the Big Red Band. It was a thrill I'll ever forget.

As for Canada, even passport cards are about $80 per person. I guess they could still see the Falls from the American side though.

You also have to remember Ohio's rules for traveling out of state...then factor in the expense, and finding an opponent worth the trip.

I remember playing at Mansfield in 95, and while we travel better than most, our crowd there was about 100 people. If we played really far you would only see a handful of people make the trip.

There is a reason things are done the way they are...it's because they make the most sense.

First of all, passport cards are $55. That's not cheap but it's not impossible.

OHSAA's rules for playing out of state would allow us to make such a trip. And finding an opponent would be easy.

There's a reason big inter-state contests aren't held in a lot of states. Because the locals just won't care. They'd rather see a matchup of two teams ten miles apart than playing some school from some town they'd probably never heard of and in a year won't care one bit about.

I sat with the Inkster scout at one of Big Red's scrimmages in 2010. He said Inkster might be interested in bringing Big Red to the Detroit area for a rally at Eastern Michigan University. Their stadium holds 30,000. I'm sorry nothing came of this.

You should get right on it then, since it's so easy.

I'm sure the school wouldn't mind if all the expenses were covered by Fairwoodking.

Forget Canada. Let's think about DC. That's where you find history. Going to the top of the Washington Monument and seeing one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Going to the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and learning about what these great men did. Going to the Capitol Building and seeing Congress in action. I could go on and on. It would be value added to the students' education.
