Should there be separate championship for public and private schools?

Mahoning County has a population of 240,000 and 17 high schools with football. The population divided by the number of schools with football is almost the same for both counties. To answer your other question, a student transferring to a private must sit out a year.pretender wrote: Small rural communities have fewer kids to pull from. Open enrollment you can draw from anywhere in the state you can’t be serious. How many people in today’s economics times can afford to send there child across the state to go to school? Also if you open enroll then you have to sit out one year, but if you enroll in a private school do you have to sit out a year? (not sure) So what advantage is there to open enrollment if you are not going to play for a year? Coshocton County has a total population of around 37,000 of which 2,800 are young adults between the ages of 15 to 19. That number includes both boys and girls. Coshocton County has 3 school districts in it DIII, DIV, DV. To say that living in a larger area has no advantages is wrong. I will say that the area teams might need to step up there play but to say they have the same amount of talent to draw on is crazy. I hope Coshocton and Ridgewood learn from the experience this year in the playoffs and build on it and who knows what might happen, but I know one thing I will be around to see it.(I hope) -
HeathAlum21This entire thread has turned into a "bitch and moan" session like most of these threads do. I already stated that I thought a three division system would be better (DI and D2, D3 and D4, D5 and D6), but I like the suggestion that has 710 divisions so every school wins a state championship.

newarkcatholicfanHow many students who are not playing sports get financial aid that go to a private school?
I do not know that is why I am asking.
How many public schools help aid the parent of a “new student” find a job in the community?
Again I do not know that is why I am asking.
No moaning on my part just trying to keep some good talk going. -

Most private schools have financial aid that anyone can apply for. I do know that every student who goes to a public school is getting financial aid. Look at your property taxes for proof of that.newarkcatholicfan wrote: How many students who are not playing sports get financial aid that go to a private school?

PaladinI note that, at least in the smaller divisions ( small towns), a Coldwater or Marion Local has kids who come from just those towns. However a Mooney has All Star players from Youngstown, Boardman, Poland, Canfield, etc. Ursuline has All Stars from Youngstown, Hubbard, Liberty, Girard, McDonald, etc in multi-county areas. I long ago concluded the unfairness for this reason among others. I'm aware of the local "scholarship" drives at parochial schools for money for their "students" . It seems more than reasonable to me that if privates are to stay with the publics something has to change for a more competitive basis. Many states opt for a multiplier effect. Some simply go separate. Some folks simply want to ignore the realization of what has been going on but I expect changes to happen as society has come to recognize the unfairness of the economic system as well. Change is going to happen, some way, in the not too distant future. The results have been obvious from the uneven way the system allows a joke of the competition to continue. Numbers simply aren't everything.

i'll ask again. How come Coldwater can win, and you can't?Paladin wrote: I note that, at least in the smaller divisions ( small towns), a Coldwater or Marion Local has kids who come from just those towns. Seriously, quit your whining. You're not changing my mind, and I'm not changing yours. There may well be some tweeking one day, but the current system, as a whole is not changing. Complaining like a little girl won't change a thing -

Most of those schools you mentioned have had many students who have come up through the Catholic school system. Girard has had many St. Rose kids. Hubbard has had many St. Pat's kids. Boardman has had many St. Charles kids. Liberty and McDonald have picked up many athletes from open enrollment. Girard's best player was an exchange student from the Bahamas when they won the state in basketball.Paladin wrote: I note that, at least in the smaller divisions ( small towns), a Coldwater or Marion Local has kids who come from just those towns. Strapping Young LadI agree with the GET BETTER idea. If you're tired of losing to parochials, then beat them. Big Red does it but Indian Creek doesn't. There's nothing in the water in Steuby that makes them better inherently better than kids 5 miles away. But they took their program to the next level now it recruits itself and has snowballed....
Coldwater gets the kids from their town andn develops a winning program.
It should be motivation for the public schools to hire the right coaching staff and work harder as students to build your program into one that attracts people...
Plus it's fun to kick Catholic ass. -

Who's the little girl that started this thread anyway? -
ridgerunner88Coldwater is one of 720 schools. To say the private schools have no advantage is like saying water isn't wet! That being said, should there be separate championships, HELL NO! If you wanta be the best then beat the best........period!

I would have never thought about making private/public seperate, until this year. When a catholic school has a awesome jewish football player, you have to wonder.........What made his family go with a catholic school???:huh:allstar wrote: Split them. Sure there are kids who go because it is a christian school. Absolutely. But how many go just for athletics? -
Strapping Young LadI'm not saying the Catholics don't have an advantage. The Yanks have the advantage by being able to buy the best players. But that didn't stop the D-backs and Marlins from beating them in the WS and the Rays keeping them out of the playoffs then ousting the Bo Sox....
It can be done. COACHING, COACHING, COACHING. EXECUTION, EXECUTION, EXECUTION. -

True: How many titles do the Yanks have? Who's in second with how many?Strapping Young Lad wrote: I'm not saying the Catholics don't have an advantage. It's like 27 and 8 or some ridiculous number like that.
Makes it all the more sweet when a public kicks some saint bishop whatever ass. -
ridgerunner88Once again, if I had a kid with potential, he's going to a winner!

I'm sure it had zero to do with sports.:rolleyes:peachymom wrote:

september63You are a Newark Catholic guy. Your school must be part of the problem then, not the solution!! As I said before, when Newark Cath was going to the finals every year in the 80's were you against the advantage you had then?

It might have to do with sports. It might not. Private schools score much higher on tests and place a much higher percent of their students in college. Why wouldn't a family do what they think is in the best interest of their child and family? I am most familar with the Youngstown area, but many kids there will not go to the public in the city because they are extremely dangerous. At one Youngstown public school the cheerleading coach attacked a police officer during a fight there. The police are called into the Youngstown schools on a very regular basis. I would not put my kid into a dangerous school (public or private).newarkcatholicfan wrote:

catchr22He is not a Newark Catholic guy. He is from Lakewood.

NewarkCatholicfan...............I dont care where he lives now...............the ID says all I need to know. Newark Catholic played in about 7 state title games late 70's to 1990. Are you telling me they had no players from any other district? LOL............laughable. Now that they suck lets call for a change in the very system they benefited from back in the day!!!catchr22 wrote: He is not a Newark Catholic guy. He is from Lakewood. -
newarkcatholicfanI thought everyone knew I did not go to Newark Catholic.
I went to Lakewood and use to post both stories as to why I root for Newark Catholic but after several stupid PM'S I stopped posting them. -
ridgerunner88
Being in the Newark area, why wouldn't you root for NC, they care the most about winning in that area, right there with Licking Valley. To say that NC sucks is........well ridiculous.......they are winners.......period.newarkcatholicfan wrote: I thought everyone knew I did not go to Newark Catholic.

september63OK, they dont suck. Just saying they havent made the playoffs since 1990. Before that, they semmed to be playing in the final four almost every year in the 80's.
-
Strapping Young LadDidn't NC just win a championship in '07???
-
newarkcatholicfanYes they did.
The last two years they have not made the playoffs and that was the first time in the history of the school that they have gone back to back years and not made it.
