Cleveland Cavaliers Offseason Thread 2013

I agree with the redundency in drafting a position we just selected two years ago at #4 was what led me to be pissed about this selection at first. None of the top guys are sure things. Hell Bennett and McLemore are the most "sure" thing in the minds of most analysts. And unfortunately we took guys at their positions the last two drafts.

I like Bennett, Karasev and the little I know about Felix. So overall pleased with the guys we picked up. But I also have questions about the make up of the team. Unless Chris Grant is truly outsmarting everyone and realizes the NBA is going to these smaller lineups sooner than expected and he's jumping ahead of the curve.

Really like Karasev. Setting myself up for a let down but I think he could be a Manu type player for the Cavs. Smart, good shooter/passer. Even the highlight of him driving to the rim they showed last night had a little Manu flair to it.

I like when he says he wants to be better than AK. I like our options with him. Get him over here as soon as we can, IMO.

    1. Anthony Bennett | 6-7 | 240 | SF/PF | UNLV | 20

One thing is for sure, Cavaliers GM Chris Grant marches to the beat of his own drum. No one had Bennett pegged as the #1 pick. He has the talent to go first but issues surrounding what position he will play at the next level and the rumor that he had gained weight during the off-season seemed to drop him a few spots on everyone’s big board. He says he is a small forward at the next level but doesn’t shoot it well enough currently and will have a tough time guarding other 3’s in the league. What he does have is a massive wing span and a versatile offensive game. Chris Grant isn’t afraid to go with his gut no matter how big the risk and/or reach and this pick proves it. – Clayton Crowe

[h=3]19. Sergey Karasev | 6-7 | 197 | SG/SF | Russia | 19[/h]After shocking the world and taking Bennett with the #1 overall pick, the Cavs decided to go with an International talent in Karasev. He was projected a lot higher than this with rumored promises to the Mavericks and Hawks but in the end he falls to the Cavs at #19. He isn’t likely to come over to the NBA this season but he has a lot of value at this point in the draft. He is an above average shooter but struggles with his overall consistency. He is just 19 years old and one of the youngest players in the draft so there is plenty of time for him to grow and develop the consistency on both ends of the floor that he needs to play at the next level. – Clayton Crowe

[h=3]33. Carrick Felix | 6-6 | 203 | SG/SF | Arizona St. | 22[/h]This is a solid under-the-radar shooting guard. Much like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the lack of talent surrounding Felix hurt his draft stock, as many folks didn't see much Sun Devil basketball this season. He struggled (both on and off the court) early in his college career, but came on strong this last season (14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 37.4 3pt%). He is a tremendous transition player and grades out as a potentially elite defender at the next level. He's already 22, so not much upside left, but he could fit in as a nice role player in Cleveland's quickly developing core. -Nick

He is. Chris Grant confirmed both last night and today. Will spend the summer doing Russian sh*t and then coming over

Def would, TT could play the 4, move Andy back to a backup role. Bennett off the bench at the 3/4. He makes us a playoff team I would think. Not sure on his defense though, admittedly I didn't watch many Minn Timberwolves games. I did have him in fantasty though

Did you hear CG today on the radio? He said very resoundingly that this is only the beginning of the summer moves. IMO at this point it's more likely than not that we don't start the year with the entire group of KI, DW, TT, AD, AB, and AV but that's not based on any knowledge of any moves or anything.

Minny is almost guaranteed to match any offer for pek, but it would be a very good signing.

I know that both Bennett and Grant were scheduled to be on 92.3 this morning during the 9:00am hour. They probably have a link to the interviews on their website.

Not much of an NBA guy. Did the Cavs just use their 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks for the SG position that they used their first pick last year on? Does that make sense.

Not just, they did it last night.

The 3rd pick was traded. Their 2nd pick projects to be able to play both the 2 and 3 (although I would say there's a major de-emphasis on positions nowadays anyways), and the 4th is a defensive-minded role player.

    So yes, it makes sense.

I think Bennett can play Small Forward. Antawn Jamison wasn't the shooter or perimeter type player Bennett is and he was able to play Small Forward effectively in the league.

    I love the pick.

And, he'll be able to stretch the floor when he's in at the 4. Imagine a small lineup with a Screen and Roll w/ with Dion and TT w/ Kyrie, Karasev and Bennett able to hit the three or drive to the rim effectively??? Yes, please!
