Let's face it, some people just don't try very hard, or are just not persistent enough. If it doesn't fall into their lap, or if it doesn't fall into their lap in just the right way for just the right amount, they'll just keep drifting.

I never went to a regional campus, so I wouldn't know, but say if you did to to OSU Marion, doesn't the degree still say "tOSU" with no mention of Marion? Reason I assume that is because I know people who went to OHio U Eastern and they would always be like " my degree still says OU on it"vball10set;1618766 wrote:This

Employment numbers are not great statistics. They're something, but they don't paint the whole picture.Pick6;1618647 wrote:I really don't think Ohio is as bad as you and some others make it out to be. I won't claim it's great, but not horrible.
People who looked for work and then gave up without finding anything are EXCLUDED from the "work force" numbers, which essentially lowers the unemployment figure. -

I'm aware of how the unemployment number works. All things relative, it is the best measurement we have to work with, unless you are trying to make some point that more people have given up searching for work in Cleveland or Cincinnati than DC or NYC.dlazz;1618775 wrote:Employment numbers are not great statistics. And nothing is ever going to be normal when you are a criminology major trying to get a job in an IT field. -

Basically, Dlazz has ruled out an entire industry that is designed to help him find a new/better job because he had a bad experience with 1 or 2 people.iclfan2;1618646 wrote:That's the dumbest thing I've read on here yet, and I'm not shocked it came from you. I'm on my 3rd job. 2 of which came with the help of a recruiter (The one that didn't was my job I got out of college). No one is reading your resume you submit online, and 90% of the time they are using a recruiter anyway. Not only that, the recruiter who got me my 2nd job kept in touch and could have gotten me hired at a higher wage in a better industry, and he came looking for me for the job. Had I wanted to stay in Cle I would have taken it. You must have had a shitty recruiter. -

I find it hard to believe that "everyone else" agrees that recruiters are useless or incredibly unhelpful. If that was the case, the industry would not exist. Just curious, but how where the recruiters you worked with incredibly unhelpful?dlazz;1618703 wrote:You must not browse here much.
I was specifically talking about IT recruiters.
I dealt with two and they were both incredibly unhelpful. Everyone else I've talked to in the field more or less agreed with me. -
derek bomarSubmitting a resume yourself works about as often as a fat guy trying to pick up a hot chick at a bar (assuming the fat guy also has no money...chicks dig money). You need a connection, and a lot of the time that comes in the form of a recruiter/head hunter. Just blindly submitting resumes online and waiting for a call back is not the best way to get a job.

They were hellbent on recommending low-paying, contract work in random fucking areas.gport_tennis;1618787 wrote: Just curious, but how where the recruiters you worked with incredibly unhelpful?
"I have a great position for you in Cleveland paying $15/hr for 6 months!" Okay, but I told you I'm in Columbus and locked into a lease...
"Oh! Well I have another in West Jeff for 12/hr!" Gtfo.
The last one I dealt with put me in for a position at a company in Columbus and I heard absolutely nothing from them (or the company) for three weeks. They had me do a video resume thing. It was fucking stupid.
Never again.
IT recruiters are probably great for developers, but for virtually every other position they're not helpful.
Its almost as if they had blinders on and cherry picked "help desk" out of my resume and that's all they'd recommend, even though I hadn't done it in 5 years. -
Manhattan Buckeye"Submitting a resume yourself works about as often as a fat guy trying to pick up a hot chick at a bar"
Agree with this. It is all about connections, and even then it might not help. Just to check the market I sent a resume/cv to a very close friend of the wife (she's going to be in their wedding in October) at a Fortune 100 company. I couldn't even get an interview. I have no idea how bad it is for people recently graduating from college. -

IT recruiters are very helpful. A lot of companies don't even hire direct anymore without going contract to see if you fit. Maybe not helpful with you but I've been in the industry a very long time and everyone I know has used recruiters and they are very helpful. I spent the majority of my IT career at a Fortune 500 company hired originally by contract. We only hired through contracts. IT department of over 700+.dlazz;1618790 wrote:They were hellbent on recommending low-paying, contract work in random fucking areas.

QuakerOatsThe crux of the thread was pointing out how the lack of economic growth in this country (due largely to the anti-growth and anti-business policies of the current administration) is hampering the ability of millions of people, including new graduates, to find meaningful work. Millions have simply lost hope and have stopped looking. Millions more cannot find the type of work they were educated for (yes, some of that is the student's fault etc). We had a horrific recession, and although we want to recover from it, we have an administration whose policies will not allow it to happen. Sadly, the public schools and many universities continue to turn out many who are unprepared and unable to recognize this fact. Maybe a few more years of living in the parent's basement is required for the lights to go on and the barack love-fest to end.

Manhattan BuckeyeIt should go to the politics forum.
I don't get it. I worked for 3 Vault-250 places that at in the aggregate hired about 90 people for their respective summer programs.
My last place = 0
Second place = 4
Third place = 0
No one is hiring. I don't know why, or how the unemployment rate has fallen but it isn't because of hiring. -

It's not pride, its reality. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a degree and believe that it is the #1 school on the planet. US News can have their own opinion based on broken metrics that favor old institutions with larger endowments; what is Harvard or Yale doing to change the world? US News is lazy, they don't even try to be unbiased. I'd take the best and brightest of OSU against the best and brightest of any school on the planet.HitsRus;1618660 wrote:I share your Buckeye pride as my graduate degree is from tOSU. Many of our grad schools are tops in the country, but the latest US News and World Report rankings had our undergrad as sixth in the B1G....16th nationally for large universities. Certainly pretty good, but not enough to write your own ticket because you have OSU paper.
For the sake of argument, let's agree that OSU is a better school than Mount or Muskie or YSU or BGSU....when it comes to hiring, attitude/motivation is at least as important, as employers have to train you anyway.
Having a diploma from a "better" school is like having a big dong...it's nice to have, but unless it's movin' and shakin' in a good direction, it isn't going to satisfy anyone. -
AutomatikOSU is a well known university...nationwide, globally. I like that.

I think Dawson is doing the video resumes...I think those are dumb as well. Some recruiters are really good, some are not, just have to find a couple that listen to what you are looking for and not just trying to fill the current opening. Did you ever follow up with the recruiting companies yourself to get feedback?dlazz;1618790 wrote:They were hellbent on recommending low-paying, contract work in random fucking areas.
