Thought of another one:

I think that the song "Puff the Magic Dragon" has nothing to do with a certain substance. That the boy was called Jackie Paper was simply a coincidence. It also helps that the writer of the song agrees.

The car ride scene in Meet the Parents where DeNiro and Stiller address this topic is a classic. "Puff is the name of the boy's magical dragon."

Entertainment is difficult. Different people have different tastes.

I just re-watched The Dark Knight Rises in its entirety since seeing it in theaters as it was just released on Sky (HBO overseas). It is a bad film IMO. Period. The plot is non-sensical, the editing is off, and the dialogue is uninspired. If it wasn't a Batman film by Nolan it would have been as critically panned as The Lone Ranger. I love Nolan's films, particularly The Dark Knight, but the movie was just poor. How it has an 8.6 rating on IMDB.com is beyond me. There are so many throw away scenes, like when JGL leads the kids on the bus to the bridge...WTF was the point of that? It didn't go anywhere, it just wasted a few minutes. Just a sloppy film.

And Avatar sucked too, but most people realize that.

Speaking of: I think Jack Nicholson was a better Joker than Heath Ledger, and that while Ledger's performance was good, it has been over-hyped because of the timing of his death.

The point of the orphans bus scene was to solidify his frustration and contempt for lack of effectiveness and "just following orders" mentality of police/military to explain why Robin would leave the force to join the cape crusader.

Absolutely ridiculousness. Ledger's Joker was just a great portrayal. That film overall was great, the opening sequence alone completely draws you in. But Ledger definitely was brilliant in that role.

Meh, I distinctly recall thinking, "When does he get messed up?" I remember thinking, even, that there were setups for him to show some serious derangement, but the writing somehow took the wussie way out.

As for his portrayal, it seemed like he was trying to be Jabba the Hut half the time with his tongue doing weird things and him making mouth-breather noises. It was lame. He pulled off the evil genius part well, but he barely seemed competent at points in the movie.

So it wasn't all him. Some of it was the writing of his character. However, he wasn't without fault either.

Obviously you won't change your mind as I'm sure you've had this discussion with others before, but I disagree.

Each time he told a story about his "smile" he did a great job of seeming off edge but somehow still in control. I loved the discussion with two-face at the hospital. The chicken scene with batman on the bike was also great. I just think he did a great job of being serious and ridiculous and switch back and forth between those different state of minds while continuing to pursue anarchy.

The Joker is probably my favorite character of all time. It has nothing to do with Ledgers death either. It was just awesome. I still watch that movie for The Joker alone.

It was the last film I saw that afterwards I wanted to get back in line and see it again.

However, Warner Bros. must have paid off the MPAA. I have no idea how that got a PG-13 rating.

Ledger's "Joker" was very, very good. Nicholson's was legendary.

And we could split hairs over who tackled the bigger burden. Nicholson with the weight of expectations and first off the bench, or Ledger having to follow that.

I agree, for 1989. At the time it was a ground-breaking performance because there was nearly a decade of awful comic book/superhero films and Burton's Batman made it relevant again. Looking back, the movie is a bit corny (and the rest of Burton's Batman films are horrible - generally speaking Burton is more style than substance) and Nicholson simply hammed it up for 100 minutes. I loved the movie at the time but I wouldn't watch it again. I would watch The Dark Knight 15 years from now. It is a real film, not just a comic book film.

I find that internally inconsistent. You agree Nicholson's performance was legendary...for who knows how long. But you lost interest, and now you think Ledger's will stand the test of time better.

I get what you're saying, but a criticism of the period is miles apart from criticizing the performance. I'd simply offer you're criticizing the context and not the performance. I can just as easily sit here and say the fawning over Ledger's performance is more the result of a grunge culture as anything.

IMO Ledger's performance is different (and amazing), but not as complicated or diverse as the "original". He's a guy presenting a new spin on "Shane" that competes on its own...but no matter how unique or original it will always remain an imitation or reboot.

I don't think it is inconsistent. Batman (1989) was huge. With respect to the younger people here they probably don't realize what a cultural phenomenon it was unless they lived it. Prince had a hit song, people shaved Batman logos on their heads, everywhere you went it was all Batman. Some movie critics state that it along with Indy and the Last Crusade created the Summer blockbuster (Top Gun was a couple of years earlier, and I can see that being in the mix). Nicholson's performance made the film, but based on previous cheesy, silly villains he didn't have a high standard.

The Dark Knight isn't a great comic book film. It is a great film that just happened to be based on a comic book. Ledger is truly scary, whilst Nicholson just laughed and cackled - in 1989 that worked but the film doesn't really hold up. If you show 1989 Batman to a 15 year old today they would get bored in a few minutes. If you show The Dark Knight to a 15 year old in 2020 it will likely hold up better.
