    This really ended up being a great thread with some ridiculous opinions. Also, dlazz made some serious and actually helpful posts... that alone makes it HoF worthy.

    Humor is just one of those emotions that are so personal and simple reactions that it is hard to explain. For example, who you like (or even love) is something that personal. You can list characteristics or things a person has done as "Reasons" for why you like or love them. But that doesn't necessarily explain it as if it was an objective decision then wouldn't we all like or love the same person? Same with comedy. You can list different thing you thought were funny in the show, but that doesn't necessarily explain it.

    That's the very nature of an opinion, sometimes you just have one and there really isn't a good justification beyond it being a completely subjective point of view.

    As I understand it, the Big Bang Theory is simply an extreme satire on the "scientist geek" stereotype. When viewed in that context, the show does have some fairly funny moments. I do agree, though, that the laugh track is way too prevalent and takes away from the viewing experience almost to the point that it's intolerable. The laugh track almost makes the show seem desperate for laughs, in a way.

    If you can get past the constant chuckles, the below clip from BBT is a primary example of the sarcastic nature of the show. This clip actually reminds me of the kind of witty, caustic attributes that I enjoyed so much about my favorite television character of all-time, Dr. Gregory House.

    It's based on nature, it's based on common sense. It's based on a sense of how our society values diversity, values male & female influence and roles. Show me the data that says it's not. I don't believe there's enough data at this point to conclude otherwise, not to mention the inherent difficulty in measuring this factor in the first place.

    I didn't say gay couples shouldn't adopt, I said all else equal I think a traditional couple is more optimal. When I say common sense I'd just ask this question: Do you think any kids raised by gay couples never regret not having a mommy or daddy? If that answer is >0, then I am correct.
    I pretty much agree with Gut on this issue. We can't choose our parents. However, in this day and age culturally, I imagine if we could choose our parents, potential adoptees would choose the traditional norm of a mother and father, male and female, if they could.

    Maybe that won't always be true. But, I think, if you've got one child left up for adoption and it's high quality gay married couple vs. high quality straight married couple, you choose the straight couple. I also don't see why some liberals (in my experience) find this particular view so egregious when there's a large swath of the population who is unequivocally opposed to gay adoption, gay couple in vitro/surrogates, etc.

    There are still people who are racist and those who are absolutely against mix-raced couples. Should we not allow heterosexual mixed raced couples or black couples adopt white children?

    The only difference would be that of numbers. At what point do you deem enough of a percentage of society has changed their views to allow it?

    Heck, take it further. There are plenty of people who think gambling or drinking even in moderation is not morally acceptable. Should we not allows families who partake in those activities in moderation not adopt?

    There is certainly something to be said of a "motherly" figure. I would have been lost growing up without my mom. Just as fathers provide a unique and special connection with their kids, so do mothers. If that makes sense. There is without a doubt a difference between the two. Two dads would just be not a good mix, in my view, as wouldn't two moms. I think the mother and father dynamic offers something more.

    Also, whether you want to admit it or not, we live in a society that, from the beginning of time, has been conditioned to believe in the mother and father dynamic as the traditionally acceptable structure of the "family." Kids who are the products of gay marriages are, therefore by nature, are at very real risk of being singled out and ridiculed and mentally abused by their peers growing up, which is not the kind of situation a young person should have to live through. Is it right? Certainly not. But it's reality.

    So, with that said, is it a healthy environment for a child?

    You can allow it, but you can't force it. Not only is discrimination legal in adoption matters, it is a large part of it. On both ends.
