True. Never, ever, ever have I seen or been party to under-the-table payment.I Wear Pants;1486219 wrote:As someone who has worked on a farm I can confirm that no one has ever been paid under the table. -

I think that one issue with the two-tiered system is people would continue to claim "discrimination" because he/she wasn't hired for a job due to a hiring of someone who doesn't earn as much -- i.e., a 25 year old (more pay) misses out on a job because a 16 year old (lesser pay) gets it.Manhattan Buckeye;1486216 wrote:^^^ There are many legislative movements to make it a two-tiered system, and IIRC there was a law about this in Ohio regarding farm work. I could be wrong but it makes sense. If the farmers had to pay everyone $15/hour or whatever "living wage" is being touted during planting and harvest season most farms would be out of business, and young people wouldn't have jobs.
That, or farmers would just pay people under the table, not that it happens of course.
Even though, it makes sense to me, I think there'd be all kinds of more problems with it.
As someone who grew up on a farm and knows plenty of farmers, I can confirm that people do get paid under the table.I Wear Pants;1486219 wrote:As someone who has worked on a farm I can confirm that no one has ever been paid under the table. -

I should have made it clear I wasn't responding to the minors part.queencitybuckeye;1486222 wrote:Not sure how history tells that much of a story here. The current minimum wage is X. If you make it a number less than X for minors, some businesses who hire lots of minors will hire more of them. I know for a fact that the restaurant industry would like more people, but simply can't afford little Johnny at $8, but can at $6.
For minors? How so? -

And certainly not at auctions either.I Wear Pants;1486219 wrote:As someone who has worked on a farm I can confirm that no one has ever been paid under the table.
One of my best memories from summers in college was one of my buddies calling me up and asking if I wanted to make $100 for four hours. We go to a home auction, it probably lasted a bit longer than four hours but all we did was carry stuff out of the house into the lawn. Some heavy stuff, but not too bad. At the end the barker said he wanted to shake my hand and put a c-note there. Good work if you can get it. -

I'm going to assume you're much older than I am. Because if you were bailing at the same time I was you got ripped off big time.thavoice;1486265 wrote:The good ole days as a kid working all day bailing hay and getting $20 cash money.......and ya thought it was a great deal!!!! -

Try putting in about 500 square bails a day for only 10 bucks! I guess good old family bonding time sweating your balls off and being covered in hay seed can take the place of cash, though.thavoice;1486265 wrote:The good ole days as a kid working all day bailing hay and getting $20 cash money.......and ya thought it was a great deal!!!!

Say probably 24-25 years ago! But that pay was better than my first job at the park in the summer making $1.80/hr.....I Wear Pants;1486271 wrote:I'm going to assume you're much older than I am. Because if you were bailing at the same time I was you got ripped off big time. -

I'm sure it was. And I don't know about you but I actually had a good time bailing. It was basically hanging out with my friends all day while throwing things.thavoice;1486277 wrote:Say probably 24-25 years ago! Manhattan Buckeye^^^ Crap pay (but tax free) and everything was fun and games until someone picked up a bale and there was a black snake hanging out. That made for some interesting reactions.

Yep, out of all the chores and stuff I was expected to do during the summer, that was about the most fun of them. Long day, but fun.I Wear Pants;1486278 wrote:I'm sure it was. reclegend22When I bailed hay in the early part of the 2000s, my friends and I were paid $10 an hour. Were we getting scammed? I need to know if I need to send a goon out to his farm to collect any debt. Thanks.

Don't know that I agree with that. But I will say some percentage of what black people attribute to racism is experienced by all people but recognized for what it is - simply rude or bad behavior. I believe there is "far more" racism than white people realize, and "far less" racism than black people perceive.Scarlet_Buckeye;1486382 wrote:That Oprah Winfrey is a hypocrite as she is one of the biggest reverse racists you'll see (against Caucasians). <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <wunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <wontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> -
