Paleo eating

SonofanumpI try to keep my workouts to 45-50 minutes inlcuding warm up and stretches.
-
Azubuike24I've been doing 10-day cycles, 3 workouts per. Around 90 minutes each. My goal is to put on 15 lbs by Christmas, so these 90 minutes usually get followed by massive re-feeds. It's perfect to do on a weekend, but it also helps that I have a home garage gym w/flat screen TV and kitchen at my disposal. Outside of these sessions, I've pretty much tried to do nothing other than walking. Maybe one intense sprinting session or Kettlebell swing/snatch session every 2 weeks, but that's maybe 15-20 minutes total and it's mostly because I do enjoy some intense stuff.
You guys have any specific goals you're shooting for? It's funny, I'm pretty good at helping others achieve what they want, yet I've struggled when it comes to my personal aspirations. -

I put on 10lbs in the last 20ish days. Don't judge. -
Raw Dawgin' itAnyone ever heard of or try something called a Bear Complex? I tried this and was sore as hell the next day, works everything if you have a short window to work out.

like_thatFor you leangains fans, my housemate has been trying to argue with me how it is unhealthy, etc. I gave her this link http://www.leangains.com/2010/10/top-ten-fasting-myths-debunked.html, and she refuses to accept this source saying it is not a "purchased" site and it is just a blog.
Anyone have any other articles/studies so I can shove it in her face? -
Azubuike24You can own her in this argument. Fasting, when done right, is one of the healthiest things you can do. What are the grounds to her argument about it being unhealthy? I'll point out links based on that.

This is pretty much her argument lol. She is just sticking to the conventions. I gave her these links:BR1986FB;1291712 wrote:Let me guess..."breakfast is the most IMPORTANT meal of the day!!!" "Your body will go into 'starvation mode' Idiot...
The best part of the first source (askmen), is she started this argument by sending my an askmen article that stated skipping breakfast is bad.

Anyway, we are arguing over gchat, and after I sent those links, this was her response:
housemate: im not going to argue with you about this bc i think its dumb and nothing you say could convince me its a good thing do to your body
(yes, despite being a lawyer, she is still a blonde).
Sign of getting pwned. -
BR1986FBYour body would have to be at a ridiculously low bodyfat level to even get close to "starvation mode." Skipping a meal isn't going to send your body spinning out of control. She's a fool.
-
Azubuike24I tend to find the people who argue against fasting are generally carbohydrate-dependent and thus, yes, fasting for someone like that is very difficult. Until you've become adapted to being able to rely on stored fatty acids, the body generally does need fed and skipping a meal becomes a negative. That's a completely different argument than Leangains though. With Leangains, we're talking about a 16-hour "fast", which is nothing. More than half of that is spent sleeping.
Again, it goes back to goals and purpose. For general health, fasting is great. For burning fat and/or building muscle, specific nutrient-timing is crucial. Same with training time. I'd also say that many who feel this way have somewhat of disordered eating or may think someone who is fasting is doing it in an "Anorexic" way and trying to starve themselves. Not at all. I usually do a 24-hour fast once every 7-10 days, but believe me, when that fast breaks, I'm more than making up for it with nutrient-dense and calorie-dense foods. There isn't any "starving" going on in-terms of overall consumption.
I've had this debate with many other trainers, co-workers and friends. It's fun because there is an element of subjectivity and anecdotal response for everyone. However, given her response about not being willing to even look at your evidence, I agree...no reason to keep trying. Let the proof be in the pudding. -

Yeah, when she's sitting at a restaurant eating her huge plate of "carbo loading" pasta, walk up to her, pull up your shirt, grate a shitload of cheese (off your washboard abs) onto her pasta and say 'LeanGains, baby!"Azubuike24;1291771 wrote:Let the proof be in the pudding. -

Lol I still have work to do that, but that would be great. -

I've had several people come at me with similar BS when talking about fasting. I'd rather not even discuss it with them anymore.like_that;1291705 wrote:For you leangains fans, my housemate has been trying to argue with me how it is unhealthy, etc. I gave her this link http://www.leangains.com/2010/10/top-ten-fasting-myths-debunked.html, and she refuses to accept this source saying it is not a "purchased" site and it is just a blog.

People are so set in their ways/beliefs they don't want to acknowledge other methods as being beneficial. I heard some of the dumbest comments when I would try to explain intermittent fasting.
"It's not good, your body needs energy throughout the day."
The funny thing is...two of my biggest haters of IF...are now doing it.
Like Azu said...results speak for themselves. I've said it before, I've been into fitness and dieting since my early teens and I've never seen results in regards to fat loss like I've seen with LG.
The best thing about it? Once you get there maintaining it isn't that hard if you follow the plan loosely.

I have only been doing it for 3 weeks, but I already have noticed a bit of a difference. Nice link you provided, I am going to need to read it more, as I can see there are a few things I will need to adjust to get better results, but so far I am enjoying it. I will have a hard time stricly getting rid of cardio though.
I wrestled, so fasting for me is easy, and it's much easier to prepare for at work. I did the 6 meals a day thing for a long timestarting in college, and I had great results, but if you aren't super strict about it you won't get the results you want. I feel with IF, you need to still be considerate of what you eat, but if there is a day or two you are loose with the diet, it won't affect you as much as it would with the 6 meals/day approach. It was also a pain in the ass to prepare 6 meals a day once I started working. -
AutomatikI was actually pretty skeptical about IF at first. My friend got absolutely shredded in a short amount of time and I was sold. At first I was like "Fasting? F that! I'm not starving myself." I was under the impression that it was like a 24hr fast or something longer than 16 hours. Once I read up, I realized it wasn't THAT drastic. You're still getting the cals, just creating the calorie deficit.
Yeah rippedbody is a bit more detailed than leangains.com I like the section regarding someones current body shape and what they are hoping to gain.
It took me about a month to get used to the 16 hours off. My "feeding" phase is 2-10pm, so it's a bit different than some people but it works perfect with my schedule. A few of my friends do it 12-8. Now it's like clockwork, rarely do I feel myself getting hungry before 2.
I'll be honest, right now I'm hitting my diet/workout plan at about 60-70%...got kinda burnt out, so not crazy dedicated at the moment. I was eating strict as hell from around May-August. Now it's football season and I'm like "efff it." Focus hard on the diet and results will come. 70/30 diet to workout. Most people get it the other way around. -
Azubuike24I'd say it's 95/5 for diet/workout. Now, we're just talking for good health. Once you get into strength accomplishments or mass gains, it's a bit more about training. However, I'll still say it's about 80/20, and the timing of that is absolutely crucial.
Unfortunately, 95% of our society doesn't need to even worry about this. They need to focus on fat loss and health improvement. Those can be achieved solely with diet. If anything, I'd say ONLY exercise on things you absolutely love. That can be simply bodyweight stuff. If they do ANY exercise, it needs to be strength-based. Sadly, convenational recommendations are not focused on diet or strength work, but on "eat less and do more cardio." The sad, sad souls... -

Interesting with the pear. It's funny, I'll basically eat anything. I've had some issues before trying random stuff I find on mountains or trails outside, not having much botanical expertise in what the stuff is (the benefits of an iron strong and healthy digestive system). With that said, cucumbers are something I can taste in ANYTHING. Most would say they don't have a distinct flavor, but I've tried many different ways of incorporating them and it's always somewhat of a tedious thing. That drink sounds decent but not sure I could do the cucumber.Raw Dawgin' it;1293410 wrote:Had a hulk shake this morning...they're disgusting...but i feel pretty energized throughout the morning after one.
