Paleo eating

Justin, I've been doing it for like 18 months, but have only purchased the actual coffee beans twice (Dave Asprey's Upgraded Coffee). Otherwise, I've just tried to find the best sourced coffee I can, and test those out to see what they do. As far as the recipe, it calls for grass fed unsalted butter and MCT oil. Other people use Coconut oil, but I've found that the NOW MCT Oil (on Amazon) works well and is very high quality. Basically, I'd say this:

12 ounces of coffee (whatever kind you want)
2-3 TBSP of grass fed unsalted butter (I buy unsalted Kerrygold in bulk from Trader Joe's as they usually have 2/$5)
1-2 TBSP of MCT oil (NOW MCT Oil)
I also throw in a little Stevia (Sweet Leaf is the brand I use)

The important step is to put it in a blender and blend it, immediately pouring it into a 16-24 ounce cup/mug. Without the blender, it's basically a waste as you don't get the latte-like and frothy texture if you hand mix it.

Dr Kno, I lost a decent amount of weight about 5 years ago, but hadn't really discovered Paleo or even just eating higher quality food. It wasn't as much of a weight loss thing, but a way to feel great and eliminate many of the typical irritants people complain of. Health-wise, I never get sick. I'm able to really slack on the typical "cleanliness" things without any issues. Things like washing hair, washing hands, brushing teeth, dry skin, acne, sunburn and even things like being prone to bug bites. Not nearly as important, if not unneeded. I mean, people avoided things like gum disease and cavities forever without any modern preventatives.

For instance, I do oil pulling (swishing MCT/coconut oil for 20 minutes and spitting it out) everyday and might brush my teeth and floss once or twice a week. Absolutely zero dental problems if you don't eat things that cause problems to begin with. Hair washing, I don't use shampoo. I'll do a combo of baking soda and apple cider vinegar once or twice a week. No dandruff or any scalp issues. Again, not putting crap into your body and compounding it by using a chemical solution topically everyday does wonders.

Those aren't necessarily the "diet" things you were probably asking about, but that took me about 2 years to really figure out and reduce all cravings for refined sweets, sugar, fried things in toxic oils, etc. It really can be that long to become very healthy in the gut and with digestion. Now that I'm there, it's an absolute breeze to just make it a way of life.

To me, I have this debate often both with friends, colleagues and online. There's two different wants to look at it.

    1. From a health perspective, Paleo basically eliminates all of these things (grains, legumes, dairy, seed oils, etc) because even if you aren't seeing or feeling the effects of their consumption, it's still causing inflammation and complications in the gut. This is something, on the surface, that a typical, hard-training athlete may not notice. They may feel better, get bigger, lift heavier and move faster/longer when eating rice, quinoa, soaked/sprouted grains, etc. This is where you have to evaluate the risk/reward. For me, I was hardcore Paleo for almost 2 years. I have since added white rice, soaked oats, certain legumes and raw dairy. Other things such as grass-fed (non-raw) dairy, nut flours specifically, are "concessions" made just as the previous 4 things I listed, but don't personally agree with me, so I avoid them.

    2. From a training perspective, there is no doubt that a higher performance at the top 5% level or higher is enhanced short-term by these things. Anyone who has tried to do HIIT cardio or CrossFit fasted or in a Ketogenic state can attest. Personally, my strength isn't affected at all, I can still max out in lifts regardless of carbohydrate consumption. Where I suffer is going too long ithout carbs and being able to sustain an hour or longer of higher reps. I simply can't do it with any intensity. From this perspective, and it being the one most in the training/fitness world are coming from, Paleo isn't necessarily for everyone.

The arguments arise not because either side is wrong, but because you can't simply say "Paleo is great for everyone." A Paleo TEMPLATE is great for everyone though. A template where each individual finds a baseline, does some measurements, bloodwork, etc...and then removes, adds and tweaks everything to see where they feel the base for their goals. If your goal is to lose fat, and you don't care about getting stronger or lifting more, fine. Go ketogenic for a period, training your body to maintain weight using stored energy and I almost guarantee you can always revert to that to drop weight. If your goal is to simply gain size, you can put on major muscle and get super strong without putting on any fat with a program like Ferrugia says. Another problem is, most people want to do BOTH of the above. They want to get stronger, build muscle, lose fat and get healthy. You can do all 4 at once, but not at the 100% extreme. Compromises have to be made. One goal has to take presedence over the other.

The good news? It's pretty much a given that Gluten, processed foods, crappy quality oils, fats and even certain non-organic and/or GMO produce is garbage. The bigger the list of "the obvious shit" grows, the more awareness there is and the less people can claim to be uninformed. Even some of your staunch members of the health/nutrition and medical fields are slowly getting on-board because the evidence and anecdotal testimonies are too common to ignore.

First link doesn't work. Do you have one that works? I am always interested in that particular subject, especially if it proves the "you need to eat 6 meals a day" mentality wrong.

I just clicked on it and it works. Are you on Facebook? If so, type "Jason Ferruggia" in the space bar and you should be able to find it.
