Oh, a different Kobe. I thought it was going to be about the beef and protien diet of Kobe Tai.

There are lots of athletes and other performers who have come out and stated that Paleo-like principles have improved their performance. It's pretty cool. A few others are 100% sold.

Hunter Pence for instance is strictly Paleo.

Ronda Rousey for the most part is too, she also practices fasting. She eats one meal a day and fasts on sundays. I don't know how someone works out that much on one meal

A friend of mine practices IF while eating one MASSIVE meal post workout. I don't think I could function on that either. He also does a 24 hr fast a few times a month. I haven't tried that yet, but I think I could do it rather easily.

As a wrestler, I think I could pull it off a few times, I just rather eat earlier in my window frame and late, so I am not hungry on both ends. I have been thinking about trying a 24 hr fast as well. I remember reading an article over the summer about how numerous olympic athletes practiced IF.

Also, this article brought the lulz, mainly because I have been in several arguments over IF. I think I will just follow this guys path: http://breakingmuscle.com/nutrition/first-rule-do-not-talk-about-intermittent-fasting

It's actually pretty easy (one massive meal postworkout).

lol...article is spot on. At first I got a lot of wtf looks when talking about it. Now I don't even mention it. The only people I discuss it with are my friends who are into fitness/dieting and some even practice themselves.

I got into lengthy discussions with one friend last year. He would say things like, "doesn't not eating break down muscle, small frequent meals, blah blahhh"

What is he doing now? He's following Leangains and fasting regularly and of course he was lean already. So he's one of those guys you seen in the 30 day before and afters with abs showing. Bastard.

I may try the 24 hr fast soon. I'm wondering how to go about it in regards to timing and when to start/stop.

The 'starvation mode" argument is the one that always cracks me up. People don't realize how long they'd have to be without food to go into a true starvation mode. It's not 16 or 24 hours. LOL

Yeah, I will admit. I was somewhat of a hater on fasting at first, but I was completely clueless to the notion of IF. Once I learned more it was very eye opening.

Haven't ate in 16 hours?! zomg...muscles breaking down. I just laughed it off. Results always speak the loudest. I've been lean and dialed into a diet/workout in the past, but nothing compared the results after discovering LG, not even close.

I try to explain this to them, but it simply is too difficult for them to think outside conventional wisdom. There is actually a medical journal that has the research to back it up that our metabolism speeds up during a fasting period of 24 hours.

As I said earlier, I am just going to follow what that guy says on the link. I am sick of arguing it with people. It normally ends up with me telling them to do what they want to do, and I will take care of myself. Always brings the lulz when fat people argue with me about it. How is that breakfast working for ya fat ass?

BCAAs right? I think you mentioned this before. I haven't taken a BCAA supp since I ran out of my last one. I had pills, I got sick of choking them down everyday.

Have you done 24 hr fasts? If show, care to share tips? My eating window starts at 2. I'm thinking of starting the fast after the first meal and going until the next day at 2. Thoughts?

Actually a pretty solid idea. Probably the way I would go about it too.

Haven't done 24 but have done 20 once, by accident. I'd recommend the BCAA's but drink them, don't swallow a pill. You can drink Xtend or Purple Wraath during your workout. I also like the green apple.

This is really a great thread. I've always been good with working out, but my diet has always been shit. I am going to attempt some of these practices and follow as close as I can for a month. Hopefully it will lead to a lifestyle change.

It def is a lot easier to maintain this stuff when you are done with undergrad.

This got me started, but I prefer rippedbody.jp It's better organized.

As for the 24 hr fast, it's goin down! Just gotta figure out when to do it. Maybe next week.

At first I thought of going 10p-10p not eating, but I imagine I would be even more irritable at work with nothing to look forward to. I think 2pm eating then stop will work.

Yeah, and that way you can easily transistion back to your 16/8 IF.

Unless any of us are hardcore bodybuilders (not dieting) or elite level power lifters, O-lifters or Strongmen, the whole "catabolic" thing is a joke. I can see the argument for them to want to have every single ounce of muscle, even if it means a little fat as well. It's the price of getting to optimal strength...you won't do it at 4% body fat.

Guess what...lifting weights itself is catabolic. So is taking a shower. So is watching TV. So is working a job. So is sleeping. Anytime you're outside of a specific window and/or not eating, you're catabolic to an extent.

The amazing this is how much manipulation we can achieve with our own biochemistry. You can literally control everything when it comes to metabolism, hormones, body composition, etc...you just have to know what you're doing and know your own body. On top of that, have a plan and be able to execute it. Half-assing it is fine, but don't expect 100% optimal results with 90% effort.

Love this thread, BTW. This stuff is pretty much my biggest passion (and sports), it's great to have the discussion on the OC.

Yeah, nice to know I'm not the only "freak" who follows these principles. Good to discuss with like-minded individuals.

Off topic and may have been previously mentioned but has anyone used the reverse pyramid (Berkhan recommends) rep scheme while training? I've been making crazy gains and getting ridiculous pumps with this. Being an older lifter, I've scrapped the really heavy (low reps) and am keeping them in the 8-12 range. Still am using really heavy weights on my first set of 8 though.

Have never done them, but have heard of people getting crazy results from them, like you say. Any idea why that is?
