How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!
-
TeabaggerMaybe I'm missing something, but from what I have read in the emails is that tressel found out about players getting tattoos for signed memorabilia on April 2. I'm sure he knew that was a violation. I don't see where it says anything about confidentiality until April 16. So why didn't he report the first email to the compliance office?

Nobody gets credit for the win.
Whatever. Still entirely meaningless. -
2quik4uTressel should be suspended for the year, just like Dez Bryant was

The NCAA did not know that he lied to them before they let them play in the bowl game. There will be more on this and then the laws that the lawyer broke by discussing a federal case, giving private information to Tressel about his client and more.Tressel is lying and you all know it.The lawyer even tells Tressel to talk to his players and tell them what is going on so they can stay away from the guy, he even tells Tressel to tell the players not to call the guy anymore because his phone is tapped and under investigation.

No its not meaningless, it will show that Ohio State cheated and got caught. -
Fab1bThe last email in that chain bothers the hell out of me. When Tress states: the 2009 big ten rings were coming in and he wants to know if there were any other names so he could hold as collateral if you know what I mean. jt
That one right there is the trouble maker IMO that the NCAA will not let go. -

I find punishing the past meaningless.
It would be like if a kid broke curfew, and the kid's parent said "You're grounded all of last week!" after the kid had already spent the entire last week partying. The parent can (and the kid can be forced publicly) to say they weren't at the party, but it isn't like the other kids who were there are going to forget what actually went down.
I don't see games being vacated anyway. Just wanted to point out how dumb the entire concept is. -

As an alum though, I disagree with your thoughts on how it was handled...if they just discovered all this stuff in January and did their reporting and held the press conference today, I am pretty pleased with how it went down tonight. Could not have really done a better job with a bad situation.
that press conference was nothing but damage control -

What the hell would you prefer as a well known hater? A public flogging? Maybe a little caning? Drawn and quartered?
Get the fuck out -

I like the idea, but I don't like the light-hearted tone of that. It's almost like he doesn't really care. If the NCAA reads it that way, Ohio State is in serious trouble.
I like "you get your rings when I know what the fuck is going on at the tattoo parlor." But, it shows he knows they're in deep shit. -

But what are they going to do, go back in time, give Miami that win and let them go to a better bowl to keep from getting beat down by Notre Dame? Nothing comes of it, anyway. -

*sigh*
No it doesn't. It shows he's quite familiar with the guy and feels he can add some levity to a situation. -

To you. To me, he might be a little more serious considering this situation, even at the time, had the potential to bring down what he's built there. The shitbags at the NCAA might think he didn't care and that's the problem. What you and I think won't amount to a hill of beans when those assholes start reading these.
Again, we can differ on opinions. Doesn't make yours wrong or mine wrong. Just means we see it differently. -

Without the e-mails, this would have been done tonight. With them, I don't think it will be USC bad. But it's not going to be a good ending. The NCAA is going to go after him because they weren't told everything they knew. They're like the KGB and Gestapo put together. Piss them off and they will do al they can to fuck you over. -
Tiger2003Thank god I live in North Dakota so I don't have to hear this shit all day. This whole situation is making me sick to my stomach. I still love Coach Tress as our coach and will support him. I am a Buckeye through and through that will never change. I just hope we can get through this and win another Big T1G Title and go back to a BCS Bowl. Now as fans all we can do is sit and wait to hear what the NCAA has to say. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
Go Bucks!!!! -
dlazzAfter looking over the emails, I agree. That doesn't look good.

Tobias Fünke...honestly, how can that not mean vacating all of the 2010 wins?
Tressel knew they broke the rules and didn't say a thing, apparently. Maybe I'm wrong, and I've always had a ton of respect for Tressel, but to me this seems like trying to make a "teaching moment" out of something instead of dishing out punishment that would hurt the team.
It's the same sort of bullshit that made me angry with allowing them to play in the Sugar Bowl. Tressel's prestige in my eyes is sinking like a stone right now. -
bo shemmy3337Wow this has got a lot worse that what it was a few hours ago.

My thoughts as well. You can't just pull a Cam Newton and play the "dumb" defense. Something isn't right here.Little Danny;704297 wrote:Both Iceman and Queen City are right. You engage in counsel... period.
My major issue with Tressel's statement is the fact he claimed he did not know what to do. That is the biggest pill for me to swallow IMO. I can assure you Coach Tressel has received correspondence, phone calls, emails, etc. every year of his lengthy career where he has to think to himself, "Gee, I really should consult legal on this". As someone in his position, the university pounds it in his head this is what he needs to do in these circumstances to protect the Ohio State University from her further liabilities. It is what happens in the business world. He's probably done it a hundred times in the past 10 years.
Me too. OSU wouldn't have imposed penalty if they didn't think something was really wrong here IMO.derek bomar;704307 wrote:I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else - I just can't get past the whole him not knowing he should'be gone to legal with this...just makes me think he's lying. Idk
Fidmeister;704434 wrote:Yes. And I know the program didn't suddenly go back to being slimy when he left. Larry Coker couldn't coach, but he didn't cheat. Randy Shannon lost way too much, but he didn't cheat.
The bad element left when Butch came in and hasn't returned.
Plus, they had the soldier Kellen Winslow Jr. to keep everyone in line.

Not exactly. #1, this infraction, had it been reported back in April, would not have carried a season long suspension for the players. So I don't see how they could vacate an entire season. Had it been an infraction that would have been a season long suspension for players, I could see them vacating the entire season. Shit, they didn't even have to sit for the Sugar Bowl, so I don't see them vacating anything to the extreme you have mentioned.

How exactly did "they" cheat? I am curious as to the how they cheated and it helped them on the field. -
karen lotzdwccrew;704612 wrote:How exactly did "they" cheat? I am curious as to the how they cheated and it helped them on the field.
Tressel hid the fact that his players had sold memorabilia, which is a violation. They should have been ineligible for some amount of games but were able to play the whole season. I'd say that helped them on the field. -
sportswizuhrdThrough all of this, what I really want to know is if Tressel received an email on a work related matter(not personal), then why didnt his higher ups get CC'ed on it? Why is it only sent to Tressel and not Smith, Gee, etc? Were those he recieved it from trying to keep the number of people who knew about the investigation at minimum? Send it to Smith or Gee if that is the case. What if someone under Smith or Gee(secretary, assistant, etc.) had access to Tressel's email's and they find out about the case and the blab about it? Tressel is in deeper shit then. I admittedly dislike Tressel and the Bucks as much as anyone else, but putting Tressel in between a rock and a hard place could have been avoided all along.

Tobias FünkeGee has a billion-dollar hospital to build, I would hope he isn't getting CC'd in this petty stuff. Gee is a tremendous President of a university I am proud to associate myself with, I truly hope he could give a shit about the lunacy that takes place in the Woody Hayes complex.
Is anyone here really surprised Ohio State's athletic department broke rules, even in such a fashion? I for one am not. For Ohio State and the rest of the elites, it's a win-vacate scenario, not a win-lose. Fans will just say "oh well everyone does it, he's human." I mean Tressel is using the "it was a learning moment" (paraphrase) line for the players, and so are the fans for him. It's pretty funny. You simply aren't going to win recruiting battles against the other elites, for the type of people they pursue (excellent football players and very lenient with off-the-field issues) and not do this. -
sherm03Bruce Feldman was on Sportscenter this morning talking about how he expects the NCAA to come down hard and give JT at least another 4 game suspension.
