How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!

The NCAA doesn't pick on third-tier programs, which is where Miami currently resides.

Won't happen, and even if it did, what does it mean in real terms? Nothing.

I'm disappointed because, IMO, he was trying to protect Pryor the way he protected Clarett- "fool me once, shame on you--fool me twice, shame on me"...yes, I'm disappointed, but there's still nobody I'd rather have leading the Buckeyes than Jim Tressel--period.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach is certainly loving this.

Schlabach wrote that piece like a cock smoking troll... Mandel did a better job writing like a journalist on si.com http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/stewart_mandel/03/08/ohio.state.jim.tressel.sanctions/index.html?eref=twitter_feed

couldn't have said it better myself--thank you!!!

I'm beginning to think Tress is falling on the grenade here. I believe he probably did forward the emails, and nothing was done about it. In the end, it's better for Tress to get in trouble, than it is for the entire program to be sanctioned(loss of scholly's, postseason bans).

I agree. I think he is going to take the punishment and the university's aim is to keep all fault on him and he has accepted that role. It better not go beyond them or the program is in huge jeopardy now. I am all for Tressel being the coach as long as none of the punishment goes beyond him.

Thanks Tress for taking the bright spotlight off the Basketball program and pointing it back to football. Disappointed yes, can't be surprised anymore, this is the world of major college football programs.

Third tier? Isn't this the team that lost to freakin' Notre Dame in a BOWL game? Look at Hawaii, once you lose to ND in a bowl game, you become irrelevant.

Right now, I don't really buy that Tressel was doing anything but covering his ass in December when all of this came out. Even if he only kept it secret when he first found out about all of it because of the ongoing investigation. He lied when they asked him about it. And I'm left wondering if this is the first or last time he's done it.

This stinks almost as bad as letting the players hold off on their suspension until the first five games of next year.

Spielman just said on mike and mike that he thinks the NCAA is going to come down really hard, this damages jt reputation...

Shit. I meant to listen to that and completely forgot.

Now it's Cowherds turn....should be a good show, interested to hear his take, since his opinion is generally the opposite of the publics general concensus.
  • ou1980
    Well never mind.....

Until this point I thought Tressels job was safe...now I'm 80% sure his job will be terminated, not this week, but before the spring game.
  • jpake1
I'm already not looking forward to next season. I've never said that. Things must change around the program, or people must change around the program.

I still hope they keep him. I just don't believe he was doing anything but covering his ass. (I don't think it was necessarily wrong, but it was an NCAA violation if that makes any sense.)

I don't think Tressel was looking out for anyone, except himself. Some of you want to make this guy out to be an angel but maybe you should look at his past players and their troubles. Some of you claim that forfeiting the 2010 season wins is wrong because you can't go back and punish for things of the past.what about USC and Reggie Bush, they were punished after the fact.
  • sherm03
He shouldn't be fired. The guy has had no other violations against him. Granted, that doesn't mean he hasn't committed any other violations. But this is the first one that is on him. So termination is a little lofty.

But getting punished for more than 2 games...that is completely reasonable. No matter what the motives were in April/June for not reporting the violation, in December he lied to the NCAA. THAT'S where the problem lies. Two games is a slap on the wrist, and he should get more than that.

Outright termination? I think that'd be pretty harsh.

Not to be political, but it wasn't Clinton having sex that got him in trouble, it was lying to a grand jury. In this case it's not the selling of uniforms that's the issue here, it's tressel lying to the school and NCAA.

USC was punished after the fact, but Pete Carrol and Reggie Bush were not. That was a joke.

He didn't lie to the NCAA. He wasn't quite as honest as he could have been with OSU. I don't think (I could be wrong) that he was interviewed directly by the NCAA.

Clinton was testifying under oath. It's hardly the same. :)

Someone watching Cowherd? I think he just said those exact words.

Dez Bryant lies to the NCAA about eating lunch with Deion Sanders and gets suspended for 8 games(remainder of the season when NCAA ruled), I think the NCAA will give Tressel 3-4 more games.
