wtf are you talking about? to be honest, though, I'm impressed that you spelled "exponentially" correctly--kudos!!! :rolleyes:athlete37;581500 wrote:Ohio State gameday cannot hold a candle to ND's gameday. And this I don't disagree with. If your a fan of ND, your obviously going to love going to a ND game over OSU. BUT, i have been to many a Michigan game over the years...have no hate towards them..and that atmosphere, even when they were good...honestly wasn't nothing special. Nothing like ND (been there) and OSU. -

Not all of them suggest eliminating St. John but instead investing money to upkeep it at a fraction of the cost. I personally am in favor of spending as much money as it takes to knock it down and build a better one for the smaller sports on the "sports campus." They should have built the Schott where St. John is, but that mistake is done.
It's beyond me why OSU just doesn't tear down St. John. I enjoy the place as much as anyone, but that land is just way too valuable to just sit there and to occupy a wasted building. Worst case scenario is they use it at parking. They could build dorms there or classrooms or whatever they want. But to just keep it as it is not economically smart. -
thedynasty1998As for tailgating.... Notre Dame > Ohio State and it's really not that close.
OSU's tailgating just isn't that great. Too widespread and too strict on enforcing open container. -

If you're interested in seeing the plans for the area click on the link he provided. A TON of detail. As the building was built in 1956, it's in a sad state of disrepair. Settling has rendered most of the entrances unusable, electrical code violations, inadequate restroom facilities, leaking roof compounded by poorly functioning snow melt equipment...the list is endless. It will be gone. In the link, it describes all options available and an overall plan for the future of the site. -

Yeah, we're definitely on the same page here. -

I have been to quite a few big games at the Schott, and those crowds/atmospheres were great. I was referring to the middle of the road Big Ten games and other not HUGE games. Places like the Breslin Center, Cameron Indoor, Rupp, Allen Fieldhous and Assembly Hall don't have off games as far as rowdy crowds go. -
thedynasty1998Great atmospheres at the Schott are few and far between. However, I actually enjoy the Schott. People have to keep in mind what drives Ohio State athletics, and it's revenue. The Schott just made too much sense.

Not sure I would go that far. Not including Cameron because it only seats 7K, those other places do have the cheese and wine crowds as well. I have been to Rupp, been to the Dean Dome and Assembly Hall as well over the years. The crowd is what the game makes of them. -
karen lotzDean Dome wasn't on my list, its notorious for not being a very good crowd outside of the Duke game.

Y-Town SteelhoundNot a big fan of the Schott myself. I thought they could've built a smaller "basketball-friendly" arena and a small arena for hockey and the other sports that's on par with Miami (OH)'s hockey arena. A multi function 20,000 seat NBA arena in a city that already has Nationwide was a mistake. With that said, the Schott is there and we have to deal with it. There is no doubt though that the Schott at its absolute loudest and craziest can't hold a candle to St. John Arena.
My question is what happens to Skull Session once SJA is torn down? I honestly can't come up with an answer. Can any of you? -

The Schott? Just scrap it. I know it's tradition, but they don't make any money off of skull session. Or maybe just do it outdoors somewhere?
As for the 20k seat NBA arena, see my post about it being about maximizing revenue. Ohio State's football and basketball programs are run like a professional franchise with the motive being to generate as much revenue as possible. -

Like Dynasty, I don't mind the Schott. Could it have been what you watned above, smaller venue? Absolutely. But as Dynasty pointed out, its about revenue as well as accomodating as much as they could sport wise at OSU. But i have been on the inside as far as lockeroom, weight and practice facility. And I'd find it hard to believe there is that much better out there. And they are currently adding more for practice purposes.Y-Town Steelhound;582029 wrote:Not a big fan of the Schott myself. And I couldn't disagree more about crazy/loud. I have been to sold out Schott at big games. Yes, it does get loud. But I was also at St. John during the Jimmy Jackson era...and that place would get so loud at times...my ears would be ringing after the game as they would from a rock concert! St. John was great for basketball, no question. But times are different now.
I am sure they will find another place for the skull session. No doubt about that. That has turned into a very neat tradition and Tressel has embraced it as well. -

That's one of the reasons I'm not a big Ohio State football fan. But to be fair, the entire university is a corporation and Gee is the CEO. They do a great job of making is people-friendly and all, but everything about the University, from my job at the Union to the $1.5 Billion hospital they're building. In my opinion it's the best way though, it is one of the largest university in the country, and in my opinion offers one of the best collegiate experiences and definitely the best in Ohio. Just my opinion though.
As for St. John, the Lane Avenue bridge is a gateway to campus, so you want to be sure you don't construct anything so tall that you eliminate the view of Ohio Stadium driving east over the bridge. But I am 100% in the camp that the ROTC, St. John, and French Field house need to go. Not quite sure what I'd do with the space though. I'm all in favor of completely rebuilding the college of engineering's buildings on Woodruff into a state-of-the-art engineering college because Bolz Hall and the building east of it look like they're straight out of Soviet Russia (fucking 50's and 60's architecture ) but I'm not sold that is the best place for it. I'd also tear down all of the five-story dorms on north campus and build another, albeit nicer, tower where the sand volleyball courts are and create a "north oval." Right now north campus sorta blows in that regard, a large green area would do WONDERS for the aesthetics and quality of life in the north campus. -

Tobias FünkeI have always hated sjmvsfscs08. I made it when I was like 14 for AOL. hahah Plus Tobias is the funniest character of the funniest show ever, I just couldn't refuse when my roommate suggested it. I was actually looking for a new avatar for my sjm name and saw Tobias and it was sold. Plus once OhioChatter let me use the accented U, it was too good to be true. haha
Gotta mix it up, keep 'em guessing.
If you haven't seen Arrested Development, do yourself a favor and check it out. Pound-for-pound the funniest show in the history of television.
As for tailgating, can someone tell me why Tuttle Park isn't the biggest, and best tailgating center in America? The City of Columbus needs to get on their high horse and renovate that place so people can park there cheaply and tailgate. They'd make a pretty penny because of the location. In my opinion athlete37 has a very valid point, there just isn't enough near-stadium tailgating, it's too far away when it's across the river or past the Schott. And alcohol enforcement is RIDICULOUS. -

I think you just answered your initial question, and I agree 150%--it was a Karen "A. The whole purpose of any athletic department is to generate revenue for the school. The college I went to had around 700 total students. At the time I was there (2004-2008) the school had seven sports teams. Now they have 18 sports. Why have they more than double the size of the athletic department in three years? To bring in more students and more money to the university. The sole reason that athletic departments exist is to bring in students and money for the university. -

Sorry, I put too much weight in tailgaiting. Doesn't help that the Ohio State game was the Purdue game this year either, but I was actually really impressed when I visited MSU and UM while I was an ND undergrad. When I tailgated at Ohio State I had to go to Little Bar and pay 5 dollars for a beer. At ND, even if you're an opposing fan you get free beer and most times free food from someone. Was given beer at UM and MSU as well, on top of the fact that UM's golf course parking system leads to a pretty efficient set up. -

I agree, but if you'd read my rant on how I feel the university overly caters to alumni and donors instead of its students you'd get my whole point. Let's just say I don't like how alumni more times than not take precedence over the actual students when it's their university. -
