You could say that if you want.  I guess I would rather national media stick to going after people in power who they believe downplayed this than a previously unknown person with a cold take on social media that has passed away.

Sorry but if you mock something for being a hoax and then end up dying from it, you deserve to get ridiculed whether you’re a random person or a politician.

I would disagree a random person deserves to be named and get ridiculed in the national media like a politician or one holding influence over them.  The cause of death was leaked for its intended purpose.

That said I do think people need to take care with comments made on social media that can be attributed to them personally.  Even more so than in public because they can easily be taken wildly out of context.

I hate these stories where someone posts something stupid, dies and then is made to look like a fool. The guy made a couple of stupid posts and now it's like that sums up the human being he was. News media should leave these stories alone as they only hurt the family.

The other takeaway is think before you post so this doesn't happen to you.

Not shocked you think that or cheer that. You’re gross. The fact you think a media outlet should report on dipshit lives is sad. I’d love to hear the dipshit opinions of the chicagoans that die daily. Idiot

I disagree. This guy is not an elected leader. He made some stupid remarks. But so has every other person.  This guy was some Joe Schmoe trying to be funny on his Facebook. His family doesn't deserve this

What do you guys always say on here? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I am not cheering his death, and obviously wish he wasn’t dead. It’s a sad story. But spare me the sob stories from you guys about mocking someone’s death. You guys would EASILY mock a liberals death if it suited your political ideologies.

Trying to be funny? He called a deadly virus a hoax. People were DYING from this virus and he called it a hoax. Do you guys feel sorry for the victim’s families when someone calls the cause of their death a hoax? No of course not

His comments were from mid-March when the lockdowns were just starting and a lot of people were wondering if it was an overreaction.  Things were evolving pretty quickly - we started social distancing and then suddenly a few days later shutdowns were being instituted.  Granted, things were already falling apart in Italy at that point.

So I'm not sure that rises to warranting mockery when most of the country probably shared his sentiments at the time that this still wasn't going to be a big deal.  Especially in OH back then, when NY and even IL were being hit harder and hadn't locked down.

There had been what? 10k deaths in the world from this virus when he made the comments? Calling something a hoax that has killed thousands of people is just dumb.

People make too much out of the word "hoax".  Some people use it far too loosely, while others ignore context while taking it far too literally.  It's not that different from Bill Maher this weekend calling it all "pandemic porn", which is almost exactly how this guy was using the term "hoax".

"Hoax" has become a very loaded word the right and the left use pejoratively to dismiss opinions widely different from their own.

This is the same logic that is used to justify doxxing and "cancelling" ordinary citizens.  Left or right, it isn't really healthy.   We all have been guilty of it on this site I am sure.

Hoax, racist, fake news, white supremacy, sexist, etc... All of these have been used to dismiss differing opinions lately.  This is how the NPC memes became trendy.

Not sure if “leaked” is the right word because it was in his obituary that he died from Covid 19

He was just a private citizen making a stupid claim. It is a shame that these articles cause his whole life to be defined by a couple of posts.  I doubt anyone was taking their cues on how to react to the lockdown from him.  Big boys and girls in the newsroom should just let it be.

45,000 have died in a little over a month.  Why don't we wait and see what the numbers are in time.  So far, minimizing it, comparing it to the flu, etc have proven to be way, way off the mark.  And the 45,000 is with all of the current measures in place.  Who knows what that number would be without those, but it would probably be a lot higher.  And for the zillionth time, the measures are to not overwhelm hospitals, not to give individuals a sense of safety.

For me personally, I always think about karma and what blow back will look like before you say something or make a claim. I’ve seen it more than enough times to know shit always comes back to you. Maybe im superstitious... who knows. In my time on earth Ive seen karma come back around countless times.

Eh, I'm not Hindu, Buddhist, Sihk, or Taoist, so I've never really been a believer in karma, as it stands.  I believe that a lot of actions have blow back, just not spiritually universe-driven blow back.

At this point, though, it does indeed seem ridiculous for people to try to compare it to the flu.  If you compare the two over an equal period of time, it's obviously been more deadly, even with measures in place.

Acton not wanting to answer the death rate question about the Ohio prison with 2k cases says a lot. She said to ask the director of prisons.

We tested a population this is your chance to do a test and find out the death rate and she just says we need more tests.

They are acting like those cases are people that are actively sick.  A few are but 1800+ are people that tested positive with zero symptoms and arent "sick" and wont be "sick"
