I don't care who you are that's funny!!!LOL -
FairwoodKingDoes Creek have a good kicker? Maybe we can recruit him.
(I thought I'd say it before someone else did.) -
FairwoodKingYes, traffic on the Big Red threads on all the blogs has been slow. I remember last year when things were really humming because of the game with Massillon.
I hope Big Red and Massillon are both undefeated when we play each other. We'll fill that stadium! -
skankFairwoodKing;437791 wrote:On a brighter note, let's talk about the stadium. The new west end stands really look sharp. Yes, the new stands seat 116 fewer people than the old bleachers, but that's the price of progress. When the entire stadium is renovated, it will probably comfortably seat 9000. That's still a big stadium by anyone's definition. If my memory serves me right, we have only sold out the stadium three times in the past 20 years, so having a seating capacity of 10,000 is not an urgency.
I'm also excited about the new press box. It will really be spectacular.
I also noticed that there is a portable concession stand set up in the visitors' area. It is badly needed.
What are the circumstances that caused less seats? -

Not enough money after paying for the kicker. -

When the stadium was rebuilt in 1966 to accommodate the old All-American Conference, we had to have 10,000 seats. One way to get them was to shave two inches off of every seat in the main stands (which were not replaced in 1966). The seats in the new stands were also made skinny to allow for more seats. I assume the new stands that we are building now will give those two inches back. Also, the bleachers are deeper which means that there are only twelve rows of seats instead of thirteen on the three sides of bleachers. I'm sure we will have a corresponding loss on the main stands when they are replaced in a year or two. We lost 116 seats from the new west end zone bleachers we installed this year for the Big Red Band. We will also lose seats because hand railings are being installed. There are plans in the works to build a super press box. Building that would prevent us from ever making the main stands higher.
My best guess is that when the construction is finished, we will have a truly wonderful stadium that seats about 9000. For a Div. III school, that should be more than adequate. -

I still think the fence on the South side should be padded. Too many kids have injured themselves hitting into the fence or sliding under it.FairwoodKing;438415 wrote:When the stadium was rebuilt in 1966 to accommodate the old All-American Conference, we had to have 10,000 seats. Maybe the stands can be moved back and elevated with a few more rows at the top to make up for moving back a few feet.
If they add handicap ramps like the endzone, they might be able to correct the fence situation.
Also, just got back from a few weeks at Myrtle Beach. Wore my Big Red Championships Hat to Angelo's Spaghetti house ( Steubenville South ) . Was bombarded with questions about Big Red's team this year. A lot of Steubenville, Mingo, Toronto people there as well as some who relocated. Ten percent discount on the whole party bill if from Steubenville; that's some serious coin with a party of ten.
It was sad that Straka had passed away at such a young age. He was the greatest at cooking those steaks and Antonucci's right hand man and partner.
Cheers. -
ManO'WarDue to codes, all the new stands will have to be built with the handicap ramps.
On the visitor side we will actually gain seats if they keep it the same number of rows, due to the cut outs for the light standards no longer being needed.
The home side, from what I've been told, will be elevated, so that the people in row A will be above the players/coaches, and the top rows will be a bit higher than current. But the aisles will be wider, so we will lose a few seats there. -
FairwoodKingIs there any talk of making the seats on the main section wider? This would cause us to lose more seats, but I think it should happen. I know couples who buy three tickets just to accommodate their fat butts. Considering how much weight I myself have gained, I wouldn't mind having a couple of extra inches of space.

According to rollredroll.com, it will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00. -
SUPER787According to the news last night (8-04 ), the welds on the lights will be repaired as needed. There will be no negative impact on the season start.
Cheers. -

It is a little surprising that they waited until the last minute to deal with this light situation. I wonder why they weren't notified sooner? -

About 3 weeks ago, the school was notified that we were one of two high schools in Ohio who had the lights that were in question; the other school being in New Philadelphia. The bucket truck has been parked in the Harding lot for 3 or 4 days.
So, it was not a question of waiting until the last minute since we weren't told of the potential problem until 3 or 4 weeks ago. I assume that's when the government issued the recall on those lights.
Anyway, it should not affect the season; at least that's what we are told.
A bigger problem looms in the Kroger parking lot where Krogers has fenced in a considerable portion of their lot for a future gas station. I realize it's their lot but people have gotten used to parking there and with some very large games coming up, parking could become an issue. Big Red has been fortunate that past managers have allowed us to use a large portion of their lot for our parking needs. Stay tuned for this one.
Cheers. -
FairwoodKingRegarding Kroger's, I remember when that store was first built. The manager tried to prevent Big Red and Central people from parking there during the games, but he really got hammered by his customers. There are too many people like me who won't shop there if they deny us parking privileges.
Of course, if they take parking away to put in gas pumps, they may not have a choice.
As a suggestion, why couldn't football fans park in Leonora's parking area and the school would shuttle them back and forth with a school bus? -
BRfootball1The lights are up and on, there was a internal problem with them yesterday, but it is all fixed now!

FairwoodKingI just passed Harding Stadium and they were working on the lights. A crane was holding up one of the lights in the east end zone.

FairwoodKingWatching the Pro HOF game brings back a lot of memories. Big Red had some of our biggest wins in that stadium, as well as some of our worst losses. I was there in 1967 when Big Red beat top-ranked McKinley in the final two seconds. I also remember our horrible loss to West Branch in 1994.
I hope we will make some good memories in that stadium this year, as well as in Massillon. -

I went to the '94 game against West Branch. Huge halftime lead for Big Red meant nothing to West Branch. Reno was outcoached the 2nd half. -

Might find Hoffa under one of the light posts hahahahhahahahah -

Considering that that light post is virtually in a cemetery, nothing would surprise me! -

Fairwood, I also was at that game. An interesting side note: Keith Burke was the kid who caught the deflected pass in the end zone. He was not supposed to be in that area on that play. He took a chance and ran to the ball and caught the tipped ball. Abe Bryan told us at the booster meeting that Keith would have caught hell for being out of position and not staying with his route on that play but could not say anything since the kid won the game for us.FairwoodKing;445783 wrote:Watching the Pro HOF game brings back a lot of memories. Also, talked to Pete Barren at the school and he said the lights are set to go. There were a few welds taken care of along with some other small problems.
Scrimmage tomorrow at 10 A.M.. Will be against Cambridge.

I also remember that the receiver was number 13 and the game was played on Friday the 13th. The number 13 was really unlucky for Canton McKinley that night!
