Big Red breaking news.

sonofsamthe point is, you talk about open enrollment, scholarships, and how much "exposure" kids get... Until you can put more than TWO kids that transfer in under open enrollment in TWENTY YEARS, I really don't want to hear about kids coming to Big Red because they have the SAME choice where they came from! Am I supposed to applaud Big Red for getting them into a D3 school? Please don't make me laugh.
Come on Big Red... Your better than that right??? -

When I was at YSU, I took a class in 1989 with Dr. Stevens, it was a statistics class that dealt with human populations.
One day, it was a Friday in September (I even had a Big Red sweatshirt on), he put up a graph of football players sent to college per capita...and guess who was #1 for the entire nation?? That's right, little ole Steubenville Ohio. I believe that Massillon was around #3.
MoW,ManO'War wrote: Woohaa...you have a lot of baseball players on your list...did all those baseball players also play football?
The Big Red list is just football players, and almost all of them went to college for football...with a few rare exceptions that were so good in another sport that they played that in college.
Are yours all football? LOL -
MANAZEsos why do you keep talking about their books being paid for? I don't get that one.
-
sonofsam
BECAUSE MANAZE.... D3 schools do NOT offer scholarships... They can't. They only thing they can offer are books and a few other potential scholarships to pay your way... The "few other" scholarships cannot be paid by the school you are attending, they have to be third party scholarships.MANAZE wrote: sos why do you keep talking about their books being paid for? Only D1 or D2 schools can offer full rides or even partial rides. -
MANAZEso your saying Big Red will give high school football players money towards their future education?
-
sonofsam
You answer this NAZE... Your Bi-polar, a joke, and a laugh on both sides no matter how much you lean one way or another. You tell us what you think Mr. Football almighty...MANAZE wrote: so your saying Big Red will give high school football players money towards their future education? -

As a side note: Bill Alford transferred from Big Red when there was a problem with the head coach. Others who transferred out were Donald Poole and Nethanial Shear; the latter two going to PA. Schools. All of the above were very good football players.WooHaa! wrote: This just came in to my email... not sure of accuracy:
"Bill Alford WHS class 56 - Purdue. Roger Alford 1st. black at WVU early 60's. Best of all, Lester Carney, not sure school but played football and won gold in olympics"
A very poor footbal era at B.R. during most of the 1950's, with the exception of that 1951 team.

WooHaa!On the original Big Red list, there are two other transfers (or open enrollment guys) that I can see. One was in 2001 and the other was 2009 (I won't mention the names). Both came from Creek. Not that I have a point here, but was just looking over the list again and those names jumped out.
Man O' War... you brought up the baseball thing. I was thinking, did Reda go for football? I thought he was a baseballer also. Just curious. Thanks in advance for any info. -
ManO'WarThe list we have is for FOOTBALL players, that is every person on the list was a football player. A few went to college for another sport that they were even better in, like Stevie Davis, and Reda.
-
WooHaa!
I gotcha. Well, to answer your original question then... yes, many of those listed as going on for baseball also played football in high school. I just listed what they went to college for. I will go back and put an asterik by those who played football in HS.ManO'War wrote: The list we have is for FOOTBALL players, that is every person on the list was a football player. Strapping Young LadHow about the idea that kids transfer to play football at Big Red BECAUSE THEY WIN AND WINNING IS FUN?????? Maybe they want to experience playing against the best competition in the state in Massillon, Mooney, Alter, and the countless other teams who they'll face in the PLAYOFFS. You're always talking about pride and other crap. Your school has had what 20 years to turn themselves into a football contender???? But have failed. That's their fault. They had/ the chance to stay relevent so kids want to play there and they CAN'T DO IT. THAT'S THEIR FAULT.
Maybe they want to play in front of huge crowds b/c for many kids that's their only experience playing ball. Why not make it as fun as possible?????????????????????????????????????????????? Because the almighty Son Of Sam has a problem with it???
Who even cares if they go on to play in college??? Someone may have made that claim, but I know tons of kids who never played football again after having great careers at Big Red. Big deal.
Why don't you quit being such a baby about the decisions teenage boys who you don't know make with their lives?????? I'm interested to know why you even care so much about it. This stuff goes on all over the country with powerhouse football high schools. SO WHAT???? -
SUPER787OFF TOPIC, or maybe not.
Just heard this afternoon that 97 kids from the Harrison Central School District are expected to transfer to Steubenville for the next school year. Over 300 children in all are expected to transfer; no word yet where the balance of the 300 will go. Probably involves the lower grades and may involve taking a wait and see approach. Harrison Central District seems to be going through some hard times. Another article about that in tonight's Herald Star. 5/13/2010
If it holds, Big Red just may stay div.3 for a few more years.

SOS, I'm sure you're used to hearing this, but you are dead wrong! What do you know of scholarships anyway? Jeff Tech didn't offer scholarships of any kind! As I mentioned before, D3 schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but they can make other school sponsored scholarships available for "qualified" candidates. For instance, I was "informed" of a community service based Scholarship that my school offers and if I submitted the required paper there was a "good chance" I'd get it! The thing is, I wasn't this great All-American potential wrestler, but my point is, that if the school wants you enough, a package can and will be created to help with the cost of college. Hell, I got a $60,000 education with only about $15,000 coming out of pocket; that's a savings of 75%, that's a good deal regardless of where you go!sonofsam wrote: BECAUSE MANAZE.... SOS, your whole argument if based on a faulty assumption, and that is you think and have stated that Big Red people and/or the transfer student feels that transfers are guaranteed a scholarship if they transfer, and I challenged you to show me one person that made such a guarantee! The fact of the matter is that no one knows why the transfers decided to go to Big Red other than those transfers; so if you're all that concerned about it why don't you contact them to find out. Actually I'm pretty sure that Branko's dad has been on here (either here or the other site) to explain his and Branko's reasoning! -

No mention of where the students are heading, but there are major problems in Harrison Hills.Currently, 284 students have left to [sic] local district due to open enrollment and other means... -

No, I was not trying to be funny. The number of kids that applied was told to me by a teacher this afternoon. The problems in the Harrison school district are financial. The article is in today's Herald Star 5/13/2010, in the local news section, front page. They are trying to apply for financial assistance in the county. The school's part will come under the Community Development Building Grants. I do not have an inside track on this information, just giving a heads up in case anyone else has some more information. There were some Harrison posters on here. Applications for transfer are not publicly acknowledged in a newspaper. CheersBigred1995 wrote:

BuckCreekMany different scholarships are available to students at most colleges. JCC even had scholarships offered by the college, I am sure they still offer them as EGCC. If a college wants an athlete, they will find a financial package to help athletes, even though the actual scholarship may not have any requirements that have any relevance to athletics.

And how the hell would you know?!?! Where you in the class?? I don't recall seeing you there, so once again your assumptions are wrong.sonofsam wrote: Too bad that included Steubenville, Mingo, AND Wintersville since they are all considered "the steubenville area"
It didn't say "Steubenville Area" or "Steubenville/Weirton Metro Area"...it said Steubenville period....on a per capita basis. -
MANAZEDidn't you know Wintersville and Mingo is Steubenville? Gee MoW get a map! I mean all their kids go there when they get in to high school anyway.

I talked to another mom this morning while at Steubenville K-Mart at our coffee get together. She is trying to decide between Steubenville or Carollton for her 3 children. A whole lot of shaken goin on.

WooHaa!I foresee lots of moving out of the Harrison district. Mainly because of the unhappy people in regards to buildings shutting down. It was reported that Harrison's board has decided to not shut buildings down, but to ask for a 9 mil levy to keep buildings open. Good luck with that...
It is a shame to see the area come to this. I hate to see school systems in need. For the sake of the kids in Harrison County I hope something works out for them.
