2013 Wayne County Athletic League Football
-
jacoWow. Some exciting football tonight. Alot of one loss teams in the league right now. Big wins for Chipps and Bears.
-
Havin FunCrazy night in the WCAL. A huge game next week as Waynedale travels to Doylestown. The Bears flat out shut down a very good Hillsdale ground game tonight. Chipps, well who knew!?!?! This is going to be a great final four weeks. Strausbaugh returned for his first game tonight with I think 2 TD's and 2 INT's. If he plays last week I think the Bears could be 3-0 in the league now. He is a game changer on both sides of the ball.
Oh well, time to focus on Chippewa now. -
pdracerGreat game in D-Town tonight for sure. Chipps earned everything they got tonight. Congrats to those boys and to the new coach for making a great turnaround. Maybe he can share some tips with Dennis and help him get another win this year.

high state ratings
NORWAYNE—Superintendent
Karen O’Hare
gave an update at a recent
board meeting on the district’s
state report card
ratings.
It was the first report
card released under the
new rating system.
“One of the goals of the
new report card was to
make it easier for parents
and the community to
read and understand their
school district’s results
and ratings,” said O’Hare.
O’Hare said it is still a
complex system, and it is
the district’s responsibility
to make sure the parents
and community members
can understand how the
district compares with
others in the state.
Norwayne ranked 38th
out of 882 schools in the
state. The district met 24 of
24 indicators and achieved
an A rating for indicators
met. It had a performance
index score of 89.6 percent,
which resulted in a B rating.
In the progress category,
the district’s overall valueadded
rating was an A.
“There will be more component
grades added to
the report card in 2015 and
our challenge as a district
is not only to maintain our
high ratings, but to respond
to the new challenges facing
education today,” said
O’Hare. “Norwayne is considered
to be one of the best
districts in the state and this
distinction only comes with
the commitment and hard
work on the part of the students,
staff and the support
of a very caring community.
Our goal is to keep all
stakeholders informed as we
move our educational programs
forward continually
evaluating what is best for
our children at every level.”
Various permanent
improvement projects
were approved at the
board meeting.
The projects included
guards on band and storage
cabinets, at a cost of $910
by Stoller Custom Cabinets;
fencing, at a cost of $4,810 by
Austin Deck & Fence and
water treatment for boilers,
at a cost of $800 by Patriot.
All of the projects will take
place at the middle school/
high school building.
The board also approved
expenditures for the new
concession stand that is being
constructed at the school
stadium. They approved
expenses in an amount not
to exceed $50,000.
The board’s next regular
meeting is Oct. 28, with
an executive session at 6
p.m., followed by the business
meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Hunter86Heard that fat lady practicing some new "blues songs" after the game on the ride back to Creston.
Stealing a line from another:
The downward spiral continues !
Congrats to the Chipps for a game well played.
Interesting happenings in the Wayne Co. league this year. -
99bobcatdbCongrats to the chipps. They played there butt off. This may not be the worst thing for the cats overall program. Being humbled by someone you don't expect in our own league can make you stronger and more concentrated for the future. Brakes my heart to say this becouse the dominance over the league sure has been fun and had a lot of redemption, but the chipps winning is what's best for the league.
These are all just kids with every team so much more in commene than most would think. All hard working small school farm kids who just love competing agianst other kids just like themselves just a town away.
Congrats chipps you deserved that one!!
Cats get back at it and show what you are made off
go cats!! -
Havin FunCouldn't agree with the above post more. The WCAL is best when all teams are competitive. No one wants teams that you know you are going to roll just by getting off the bus.
Rittman needs to examine if the program is better off now than before Dennis. If not, cut the ties now and start over with a good coach. I love watching games this year. -

Speak for yourself. I miss the good old days of shooting for shutouts against Northwestern, Norwayne and Hillsdale with negative offensive yardage.Havin Fun;1513054 wrote:Couldn't agree with the above post more. Havin FunAs a fan, I have no interest in watching 45-0 games. I won't waste money paying to see anyone play Rittman. Give me a back and forth close game anyday. Even a player, blowouts were fun once in a while and that is it.
And for all those who thought the Bears needed a new coach, where are you? -
Hunter86
Still here & still not real fond of his coaching style.Havin Fun;1513090 wrote:As a fan, I have no interest in watching 45-0 games. I won't waste money paying to see anyone play Rittman. Give me a back and forth close game anyday. Even a player, blowouts were fun once in a while and that is it.

It does appear from the stands that the assistants are doing more this year with play calling & personnel changes. (progress)
Other little things like not one kid from freshman thru varsity can be trained to kick field goals & extra points ????? What's up with that ?
We kick our extra points ( instead of going for 2 & not making it) & at one point in the 2nd half of the Norwayne game we would have actually been ahead.
Still have some things to work on, but better than last year & I think the attitude of the seniors on the team this year VS last year is what is helping to make the turnaround.
Be real interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out.
The bears are getting healthy again at the right time & that adds some different looks that we've been missing. -
Havin FunWow - great response and points hunter86. The extra point thing is a concern but we actually scored 6 points on two point conversions last night. That is more than if we had converted all kicks. The challenge isn't always a kicker. Someone who can place the ball is the tougher job. We do need to be able to convert though when you are tied late in the game or down 1.
The play calling I feel has been excellent. A great mix of run pass. Using Weaver as a receiver. The tackling is maybe the best I have seen on a high school team in years.
Considering most of the starters are sophomores, the future looks great! -
O-TrapI love a close game if it's because the teams are playing high-quality football.
If the game is close because it's a race to see who can make the most mistakes or because a quality team is having a bad night against an inferior opponent ... eh, I'd honestly take a blowout over that. -

Will you ever give Coach Z respect? Ask your son....I am pretty sure he likes playing for him.
I just wish we could all know it all like you...... -

If the coach was at fault for the losses last year, you've got to give him some credit for the wins this year.Hunter86;1513690 wrote:As soon as he earns it.
And beating Hillsdale ... that was an impressive win. -
Havin Fun
Every coach will experience a year like the Bears did last year. When talent is non-existent or too young to compete. Last year everyone thought Z was crazy for making Weaver his QB. How crazy does it look now? With majority of the starters sophomores, he is also working on getting snaps to Weaver's replacement.O-Trap;1513708 wrote:If the coach was at fault for the losses last year, you've got to give him some credit for the wins this year.

On top of it all Coach Z operates with high morals. Wouldn't trade him with any coach in the WCAL or anywhere. -

Hillsdale is awful this year.......O-Trap;1513708 wrote:And beating Hillsdale ... that was an impressive win. -
Slick RickThroughout his coaching career that spans more than two decades, coach Bill Dennis said Year 3 is when his programs have made the biggest strides. I'm no expert but i sure haven't seen any major strides. The kids have to be tired of losing and slowly becoming the laughing stock of Wayne County thanks to that man. It's time for him to step down before it gets any worse.
Look at the chipps they bring in a new coach and system and have turned things around and good for them. Also coach Z has done a really good job for the Bears though i know some don't agree. Looks like Smithville will get there first win this Friday and who have thought that? -

What does he need to do to earn your respect?Hunter86;1513690 wrote:As soon as he earns it.
By the way....shouldn't it say Runnin' with the "Class" '12 now??????? -

Ask coach Stanley, he has it and the respect of the kids as well.wcalfan;1513777 wrote:What does he need to do to earn your respect?
Even those kids who never play any sports like & look up to him.
Can you say that about "Z" ?
Really interesting how I make a positive post on here about this years team & you jump on it just because I don't agree with his coaching style.
Hit too close to home for ya ?
What really made the difference this year ?
This:
A core group of dedicated kids that worked hard in the off season, not a dramatic turnabout in coaching.
A lot of the other teams in the League took the Bears for granted this year, but soon found out that while we're not the biggest size wise, our kids pack a pretty good punch into a small package. We don't curl up into a ball this year when it's time for a big hit, we're the ones delivering the hit this season, not taking it like last year.
They're playing for each other, as a good team should. -
O-Trap
You know they were 3-and-2 before Friday, right? They aren't as dominant as years past, but ask Rittman or Smithville if 3-and-3 would feel "awful."dontcare;1513754 wrote:Hillsdale is awful this year.......
I don't think anyone is suggesting a "turnabout" in coaching, because most people who aren't part of the Waynedale program didn't see a bad coach in years past.Hunter86;1513791 wrote:A core group of dedicated kids that worked hard in the off season, not a dramatic turnabout in coaching.
Good teams take good players with hard work, but they do also take some level of good coaching. Watching the Smithville game this year (through the entire game), he seemed to balance the attack well, put the ball in the hands of the playmakers, and give the underclassmen appropriate experience later in the game.
That screams experienced, sound-minded coach.
That's good, but kids don't self-teach when it comes to getting over the fear of delivering hits. That's a demonstration of coaching as well.Hunter86;1513791 wrote:A lot of the other teams in the League took the Bears for granted this year, but soon found out that while we're not the biggest size wise, our kids pack a pretty good punch into a small package. And before anyone asks, I have no real ties to Coach Zuercher. I've met him a few times, but that's about it. However, I've been watching him for the entirety of his career, and judging his whole career, I think he's developed into a good coach. -

Well said!
Hunter, hard work and dedication has to start somewhere and that starts with the person at the top (the head coach). He hasn't changed his "style" at all. He just has a group of kids (AND for the the most part, parents) who have bought into it. Just think how much better your son could be if he just had a positive person at home telling him that his coach knows what he is doing. Maybe you don't say anything about it to him but believe me he knows how you feel. Let me ask you this.....have you ever coached at the high school level??? (Little league doesn't count now) -
Havin FunI for one am just going to continue enjoying watching great football in the Creek. If these kids stay healthy there is no reason they can't go 4-0 or 3-1 to finish the season. Even 2-2 would put them at 6-4 which is a huge improvement from a no win season. Just hoping for a big win in Doylestown for Waynedale Friday.
