The Doug Haas era @ Wooster

One of my fondest football memories was at Maurer Field, from elementary school tackle football. A half-time pep-talk from our coach, the late Wayne Hitchcock, before we went out and beat their butts in the 2nd half.Old Rider;1243213 wrote:Wooster just needs to return all varsity games back to Maurer Field...I loved playing there and it had character..the place just echoed and the locker rooms under the home side made it interesting for the visiting team! -
THE4RINGZMaurer Field was reseeded early this summer by the lacrosse club, the playing surface there is better now than at Follis Field.
-
rrfanI liked that field too. Some good wins came on that field...

CCRollyWooster has to get serious about renovating Follis soon. Move the Varsity games back to Maurer Field to finally get that stadium done right this time.

Old Rider
Since Maurer only has one side with bleachers...will the Rider fans be welcome to sit with the blue-n-gold faithful? Or atleast after your band plays and all those folks clear out..we could then slide in to those empty seats. Or just do it like the old days...let people line the field right up next to the sidelines!CCRolly;1243370 wrote:Wooster has to get serious about renovating Follis soon. Red RumMaurer field definitely had the ambiance.....too bad it didn't have the parking.
Follis seems to be the exact opposite. -
THE4RINGZCurrently Wooster City Schools has a dynamite deal with Maurer Field. The school system owns it, rents it to a non profit club for a minimal amount each year ($1). The club is repsonsible for maintaining the grounds and buildings and pays all the utilities, when there are varsity games there, the Athletic Department recieves all ticket revenue. Owning both Maurer and Follis is the best of both worlds for the school system.
I imagine for what it would take to upgrade Follis to make it more fan friendly would be near the amount it would cost to rennovate Maurer. -
iced earthI imagine it's only a matter of time until someone in town starts raising the cash for turf. Other than that, I wouldn't expect anything else to change. It is what it is. They had plenty of land...they should have built a football only stadium, and a seperate track /soccer facility. TOO LATE NOW!

your right 10 am -
rrfanWooster with a football only stadium is funny. They have not been relevent in football for a long long long time. Why on earth should they have a football only stadium?
-
CCRollyIf they're not going to get serious about getting Field Turf at Follis, they need to do something with all of the sports/activities that use that field. Besides football, you have boys & girls soccer and the band. Come October, that field is beyond a mess and almost unplayable. As for Wooster football being irrelevant...the new coaching staff and kids are working their hardest to turn that around. It's been 8 years since the last Generals playoff team, and the lackadaisical (spelling?) approach from the previous coaching regime has set this program and the communities excitement back a ridiculous amount.
-
WooballAny of you Wooster guys going to check out the scrimmage today? If so, can we get some updates on how both the Generals and Tornadoes look?
-
THE4RINGZThe push for turf at Follies is probably a couple of years away. Currently the fans/community is still in the coma resulting from the previous regime (coaching staff AND athletic director), let the program be competitive for a couple of seasons and the support will come.
Up until this year, investing anything in the program was futile because nothing was going to move the needle. Now there seems to be a sense of cautious optimism. -
rrfanWhat did the Former AD have to do with the program being horrible? Last I herd the AD was pushing for the Turf and it fell on deaf ears...
-
OQBThey are a little upset that the former AD replaced all the other varsity coaches except football......lol

I think that is pretty close to being accurate. The biggest cancer of all your coaches is allowed to drag the program down and keep it there with zero repercussions, while other worthwhile coaches are shown the door? Is there a better recipe for resentment? -
CCRollyIf anyone has any details from the Wooster/Dover scrimmage, please share.

They had a football only stadium before and everyone on here agrees it was a much better place to watch a game.rrfan;1243768 wrote:Wooster with a football only stadium is funny. They have not been relevent in football for a long long long time. Why on earth should they have a football only stadium?
They had the land and money to build seperate facilities for soccer/track and football. Insted they built a cookie cutter multipurpose with a 8 lane track and a 15 foot walking aisle. That placed the front row of the stands 35 yds. from the sideline and that sucks.
The best high school football stadiums have no track...Arlin, Barberton, Wadsworth...great places to watch a game. -
youngfart67How was the scrimmage
-
scarface1scrimmage wasnt to bad kids still getting adjusted to new system but there was definitely some positives out there. They held their own against Dover once they settled in. Dover looks pretty good and Wooster kept up with them well, just a little more thinking going on than reacting out there but that is expected while adjusting to new system.

If Wooster starts out on a down note this year who are you going to blame new AD or old AD new coach or old coach seems as if no matter what happens here fans always find something to complain about instead of actually getting involved and supporting the team. Always same parents and community members involved no matter what.

question for everyone, would like to know who is going to get the blame if Wooster starts out slow this year. Cant blame old AD and old coach anymore i am happy with change but seems like most of our fans look for excuses to complain about this program no matter what happens or who is in charge maybe more parents should get involved instead of sitting on the sidelines. This does not apply to most people on here, but if this attitude continues we will never keep good people here long enough to make a change, that being said ONCE A GENERAL ALWAYS A GENERAL GO WOO! -
RedRider1Chagrin Falls is your week 3 opponent & they'll be a favorite to win the D-3 state title...so that will be a tough game. Wadsworth too, but you guys hunts with them last year.
Don't worry about a slow start....those 2 opponents will prep you for anything the OCC has. Focus on how you finish.
As ar as improvements to Follis...I agree that it's at least a year or two away. If I'm haas, the fist mud game they play, I start floating how "other" schools in the area have turf and it sure would be nice to have it at Wooster for the sake of the entire athletic program, the band and other community programs. -

As far as playing surface here not as good as follis grass not coming in well do to lack of rain and hot weather. This info comes from very reliable source and first hand knowledge. -

although there was a change definitely needed lets not forget that the old coach had twice as many playoff appearances as any other coach in Woosters history.
