Legendary Coach Ousted at Smithville

  • Jake Grey
You miss the point JJ68. No question a coach not hired until March 1st can put a team together. That's not the concern. The concern is that the picks of the litter are already gone by March 1st. One of them, for sure, will be gone after Wooster announces its hire in the next couple weeks.

I know you have an emotional attachment to this from your prior posts so I wonder why you wouldn't want to pick from the best coaches available as opposed to the best coaches left over?

I doubt that a program Wooster's size will hire a non-faculty person for their head coach. So if the Smithville BOE is willing to make the same bad decision as its predecessor, maybe Besancon will get the job after all.

Anyone who has been around football for 45 years knows that the time to announce whether your staying or going is the week after the season ends. If he was truly concern about the kids and the program he would have announced at season's end his intentions and that would have been that. He had 35 years to think about it and shouldn't have needed another 60 days.

It seems to me that his selfishness in thinking of himself first instead of the kids and the program contributed to this whole mess.

Interesting spin on this! IMO I think it is crazy to hire a head coach of football or basketball that is not in the building full time! In situations where the school has no teaching positions and does not have the luxury of being able to create a position then I can see hiring the head coach from outside the system. In this case the coach was gone (out of state) for months at a time. Not sure any program can be at its best with less than a full time coach.

Although I don't necessarily agree with your take on this situation. I respect the fact you came on this thread and voiced it.

Besanscon will not be coaching in Wooster next season.

    Book it.

Agree. No way Wooster hires a non certified employee to lead the program. Nothing against BB, as I do think he is a good coach. Wooster is not Rittman or a New London.

Haas can teach Special Ed and there are Federal dollars available for those positions.

You're making this sound like a college program where the coaches are involved with every part of the players life. High School sports isn't like that. Think if a kid played football, basketball, and baseball and had 3 coaches constantly on top of him at the same time. Once football season is over the football coach needs to step back and let the basketball coach do his thing. Then they both need to step back and let the baseball coach do his thing.

So what if he is Florida? What can't he do there that he can do in Smithville? He can work with the guidance counselor to monitor his players grades. If the kids get in trouble the teacher involved and the principal will always be the first to deal with it. If the coach thinks he needs to talk to the kid he can call him or with all the technology they have he could set up web cams. He can arrange passing camps in Florida very easily.

With the way the systems set up and all the technology we have today there's no reason to mandate a coach be a teacher. Heck, what if he was a middle school teacher? He wouldn't even see his players most of the time anyway.

So are the picks of the litter gone January 10th? If a guy is interviewed at Wooster and Smithville and they both want him he is going to go to Wooster 99% of the time.

If we hire a guy and he is then offered the job at Wooster a month later there is a 80% chance he is leaving.

It doesn't matter when Schrock did it. With the way this board has acted this past year you could have the exact same candidates at Wooster plus Mike Baker and Baker ends up the next head Coach at Smithville. I can't speak for what Mike has done at Smithville but I know Brent was much more successful at Rittman than Baker ever was and I know this board doesn't think things out.
  • Coach_08
Baker would not be a good choice IMO.

There is a lot that a coach can do if he is in the building vs. being in Florida! Think about it! I also agree that if the coach is in the middle school that is not ideal either. Unfortunately schools don't always have the flexibility to do what has been the traditional standard. I am not saying it can't work; just that it is not the best.
Anybody that has that sweaty fat coach as his avatar tells me I shouldn't even lower myself to respond to you. But I did and now I will wait for the tongue lashing that is sure to follow!
  • Mr Miyagi
Miyagi tends to agree with Jake and RedRight.......you are 95% sure you ae going to resign, just do it already.......don't want to make a big hoopla ? Well lets invite Dorksen down and have him write an article in the paper.........it doesn't matter who is right or who is wrong , it is over .....get another coach an move on with your life ......threatening to vote out school board members is not really a threat.....who cares if you lose a seat on the board anyhow? Big Deal
  • Riderwannabe
    go get Haley from Orrville.

We'll just agree to disagree. If you don't know Smithville then you wouldn't know what's best for it.

As far as my avatar......if you look closely there is a Ohio University logo and donuts next to the fat sweaty coach. So if you can't lower yourself to respond to me you must be a TSUN fan which means after this I am done lowering myself to your level.
  • JJ68
You are correct. Hurry up and resign so we can find our next head coach who can't do anything with the players until June according to OHSAA regulations. Hurry! Hurry!

If people would just let things run it course they'd realize things wouldn't have to be so difficult.

Coach Schrock was set to retire on January 9th or 10th but he wanted to make sure he was done and wanted to think about it thru the holidays, whats wrong with that? It is January they could have another coach in by sometime in Feb. IMO.

Haas is the only finalist to have a losing record. But every 3 years he moves so he will be moving somewhere. I see durbin or seder as the best candidates. Haas wears his welcome out fast at places
  • wc expert
Haas has moved, yes, to a better job each time. That's what a lot of good coaches do. Looking at W/L record doesn't tell the story, far from it.

I agree that he has taken a better position with each move. He did take a Triway team and a Cloverleaf team to the play offs. Seems like a solid younger coach.

Agree. Wooster might be the ideal place for him.

    I agree.

Some people on here think it's disrespect because he wasn't 100% sure. No one is ever 100% sure. Even when they do make their decision there is that small part of them that questions if it is the right decision.

When the time was coming for me to get out of the Marine Corps I was like I'm done, I'm getting out of here, I've had enough of this crap. But those last couple days I started doubting my decision. I know I wasn't near 100% leaning towards getting out that last week.

I couldn't imagine making the decision about something you've done for 35 years and love doing. Better for him to know for sure this is what he wants to do and not pull what Urban Meyer did at Florida.

Did not take Cloverleaf to playoffs came year after. I don't think too many people would hire someone with a losing overall record. Winning does matter it tells us if someone can build or just coach talent. I don't know allot of people in lodi but I do know that the Roberts guy will be upset if he leaves he has one more son left playing.

Agreed, I think coach Schrock has earned it that he can decide when he wants to go, he is not going to try to hurt the program that he built.
