2011 Wayne County Athletic League Football

OQBI think these last two weeks are going to be a lot of fun for the three schools involved and of course us fans!
Norwayne has a good team, I haven't seen them play yet. I have seen Smithville and Hillsdale play.
Smithville will have to be able to match-up athletically with the bobcats....I know the Smithies struggled in pass coverage against Hillsdale. Schrock will have to get this straightened out. I would like to think the Smithies will go with a ball control gameplan and try to keep the ball out of Norwayne's hands. Coach Schrock will have his boys prepared.
Hillsdale has both size and athletic ability. I think Coach Williams is one of the best coaches in the area and he knows how to prepare his teams to win games....that's basically what he has done as the Falcon leader. The Falcons will need to eliminate the mistakes and play their best ball game to date.....but I don't doubt that they can do that.
What makes Norwayne so hard to defend is that they are well balanced....try to stop the run and they will throw on you, cover the pass and they will run on you. I think a team needs to be able to matchup 1 on 1 with the WR's to allow 7 in the box with one of those guys a spy guy on Wallace, as well as have a ball control offfense. If the falcons and or the smithies are able to do this, they will have a great shot at beating the mighty bobcats. -
Red Rumgoing with old smithies call that 2003 Waynedale has the scoring records, I crunched a few numbers...
regular season total points
2003 Waynedale..........443 pts (through 10 games)
2011 Norwayne...........423 pts (through 8 games)
league games only total points
2003 Waynedale........309 pts (7 games)
2011 Norwayne..........292 pts (through 5 games)
It looks like were gonna have a new WCAL scoring record this year.
disclaimer: always verify my numbers, I'm usually too lazy to double check myself and I occasionally add wrong. -

I keep seeing that stated and I get the reasoning, but how much challenge would a 4th quarter be really if you are already up by so much? The other team varsity is just worn out by then anyway or they have their JV in by then.RedRider1;933832 wrote:Norwayne is starting to look like Genoa. I'd worry as a coach that my starters never see the 4th quarter. I'd want to see how my kids respond. Hopefully these last two games can bring that out.
Would it be helpful just to be going against the clock? Just wondering. -

footballnutI agree with OQB's analysis of the upcoming WCAL "Championship Round" matchups. The question is, how can Smithville or Hillsdale match up with Norwaynes WR's. I've seen them both play. I dont see it. Both have been a little soft in the defensive backfield and haven't seen anything like Norwayne. Norwayne can flat out score

The more important issue is playing in a close game and being able to battle for 4 complete quarters.....like a playoff game. It is important to challenge yourself in the regular season so you don't go 10-1.
You are right, it would be pointless and classless to leave the starters in when they are up by 40-50 points. -

That's THE question! haha
When you look at Smithville, Schrock is known for his LONG 8-10 minute scoring drives. He will try to keep the ball away from the bobcats and use his strong line and stable of backs to control the ball and clock.
I think Hillsdale has the speed and overall athletic ability to potentially matchup with Norwayne, but I think the more important thing is matching the bobcats scores.....if you can keep the game close Norwayne will be in uncharted territory and may try to make to many plays and it could cost them.
Both teams will have to try and stop them early....if you can take advantage of a slow start you
will have a great shot at winning.
These next two weeks are going to be a blast! -

Schrock will retire when the hearse hauls him off the field.oldsmithie;934037 wrote:I imagine that that Norwayne will bring a huge crowd to Smithville this Friday!! I know that Norwayne is very good!, but there are a lot of intangibles in this game. Smithville is facing the possibility of losing long time coach, Keith Schrock, to retirement, so there is a ton of incentive for the Smithies!! Emotions will be high and the will to WIN will play a big part in the outcome of this game. Ball control and the clock will play a big part in Smithvilles game plan. -
mompovBeast - sorry, didn't mean to offend. Just remembering a few years ago when the bobcat qb broke his ankle on the our field and wallace came in as a sophomore. And the next year when we won the mudbowl. If they ran up the score on us a little last night, I get that. That's all I was sayin'. No slight intended to a great bobcat team.

Very interested to see how this shakes out - will be an exciting 2 weeks in the wcl. Also interested to see who wins "tier two" with waynedale facing northwestern and dalton the last 2 weeks. These games will mean a lot for these young teams going into next season. As far as Dalton playing hard all game - that is what has impressed me all year. A lot of that credit has to go to coach Doty. It would be easy for a team full of 9th and 10th graders to pack it in but I haven't seen them do that. Bodes well for the future.footballnut;934072 wrote:I agree with OQB's analysis of the upcoming WCAL "Championship Round" matchups. oldsmithieMompov, don't be so sure of yourself, Schrock wanted to leave the program in good hands and the pieces are now in place for a seamless transition.
I get accused of living in the past (Paul) but if you really want to learn football, that, is where you start. In 2003 Waynedale had beaten Dalton 40-0, the next week Dalton beats Smithville 22-20. Everybody thought Smithville had no chance of winning at Waynedale. Schrock had players injured and Smithville was a 3 touchdown underdog. Schrock went with a ball control offense and won that game with a 98 yd drive, scoring in the last seconds.
Those of us who know our history remember that the league ended in a three way tie that season. Never say never! -
O-TrapTHE4RINGZ;933963 wrote:No. Just a realist.
Well the top 8 certainly won't be.
However, since there is next to no game overlap between the WCAL and the top teams in Region 13, it seems a bit presumptuous to call that "realism."
OQB;933977 wrote:We are going to learn a lot about the league these next two weeks:
Smithville/Norwayne
Hillsdale/Norwayne
Can either of these teams get a win?
Not likely. Hillsdale has a better shot, though, because of their more balanced offense.
Red Rum;934003 wrote:after another Bobcat 60+ point outburst last night, I gotta wonder what the WCAL record for points in a season is?
My guess is Smithville probably held it, but I just don't recall anybody rolling up the consecutive 50-60 point games like the Bobcats.
Norwaynes prolific offense has to be on pace to break whatever the record is.
Not Smithville. I would imagine the most points they scored was in 2002, when they rung up 351 (only 229 in the WCAL).
Go Falcons;934004 wrote:OK! It was an emotional roller coaster last night at the Hillsdale/NWN game and that was before the game even started. After walking through the gate with the bell and making it to my seat, two Wayne County Sheriff Deputies come up and say they were told to escort the bell back out! So after a perp walk back out to the truck, I return to my seat trying to organize a boycott of the concession stand when about fifteen minutes later the same Deputies return. The one Deputy went to NWN officials and asked what the problem was with the bell at a football game? The official realized the gate attendants were being over zealous in protecting the integrity of the NWN stadium and football program told the Deputy to bring the bell back in. So that there would not be any trouble the Deputy walked back out to my truck with me and escorted me back in through a different gate. Yes I did lift the boycott and purchased a few cokes and popcorns at the stand myself.
I would like to send a big shout out to Deputy Ron Fletcher for going above and beyond in community service. If any one knows him tell him thanks again for me. I am taking a collection for the Wayne County Sheriffs Auxiliary.
Now for the game. For Hillsdale to be competitive in week ten, we need to see big improvement in our pass D and our corners need to really step up. O line will need to do a lot better at holding their blocks.
I was real impressed with the NWN QB and his ability to through the ball. The Huskies definitely have a bright future. It was an ugly win but we finally did get a win in West Salem.
Did get to meet Sydfl at half time and had a nice chat.
Repped this story.
Smithville's DBs have pretty good speed, but they're small. If Wallace gets it up in the air, I don't see them getting much of a hand on it.OQB;934050 wrote:Smithville will have to be able to match-up athletically with the bobcats....I know the Smithies struggled in pass coverage against Hillsdale. Yes, but that's no short order. Covering the Bobcats' receivers man-to-man sounds absurdly difficult.

IMO what we have seen out of the Falcons is not everything and I believe Coach Williams has kept his starters in for four quarters in most games intentionally by running a vanilla type game plan. I hope I am right. If any one can get a team to step it up Coach Williams can. -

The stands are always packed for Norwayne be it at home or on the road......Friday night was a tough night for Norwayne a classmate lost his life Thursday night and I think that may have been a reason...(plus the 55mph winds and dark skies didnt help).Need more cowbell;933980 wrote:I was at the Norwayne - Dalton game last night and was shocked to see such little fan support for the Bobcats. The bleachers were not full. You would think with an undefeated season the stadium would be packed. Is it always like that, or down because they were playing the Bulldogs? Which in my opinion shouldn't matter. Come out and support your team! In Bulldog country, if we were having a season like the Bobcats are this year, our stadium would be packed. -

On the NWN/HILLS pregame fiasco.....
No great surprise that Northwesterns ticket flunkies went all nazi on GoFalcs and his bell. I'm just glad someone had the sense to overule the zealots.
On the Hillsdale hatin' subject....
I wouldn't call it hate, I'd call it something like..........."Big 3 era over and feelin' raw about it" syndrome.
On the D1 caliber player issue....
I'm of the opinion there are 3 things that matter and you better have at least 2 of them.....size, speed & desire.
On Beasts stalker woes....
The major downside of everyone knowing who you are. wcalfan clearly has a fatal attraction...hopefully you never come home to find your pet rabbit boiling on the stove.
On the arrangement of meetings.....
I need a meeting with the WD super, AD and school board. We've got to change those putrid school colors. Hook it up, wcalfan. My number is 867-5309...ask for Mr. Thomas Tutone.
On WCAL history....
thank god for dinosaurs like Dead Bum & oldsmithie. Somebody has to remember what happened in '85. If this thread were just folks like Paul, Miyagi and me.....I shudder to think where the conversation would go.
and Ringz.....
nice shot.......the purse thing was good........How many times have you been married again???? -

May I suggest Pink and Purple, they are calming colors which would be helpful. It would definitely be unique and Beast would look better than a big brown lump!Bloody Toothbrush;934377 wrote: On the arrangement of meetings.....
