I hope you're not referring to me when you say that. I never said the schedule is weak. Compared with every other team in the valley, our schedule is monstrous. Nobody plays a Massillon or an Ursuline except for Wheeling Park who plays us. And we learned last year that Inkster is no pushover.

I will go out on a limb and make the guess that there is yet another very good team that we will be playing. I have no idea of who it is, but since we only have two confirmed away games, I think we will play someone else good on the road.

Every year at this time I make a suggestion about Big Red's schedule. I usually get knocked pretty hard for saying this, but I will take the chance and say it again.

I know we have week 9 open and I have heard the rumor that we will play a big Catholic school from Washington, DC. I wish Reno and Fred would make this contract home and home. And I wish they would make a long weekend out of it when we go there and spend a couple of nights in a motel. It would give the Big Red team and band and the fans a chance to see our nation's capital. In the 1960's (my era), the Big Red Band owned Washington. We went there three times, once for the Cherry Blossom Festival and twice for Presidential Inaugurations. I myself went there in 1965 for President Johnson's Inaugural Parade. The trip was incredibly educational for all of us. My parents had already taken me to DC, so I had seen all the sights. My biggest memory of that trip was when we went to the Lincoln Memorial. I watched the faces of my friends. Even the rowdiest kids in the band stood there in stone silence in front of Lincoln's statue. Everyone was respectful. I just wish that today's Big Red students could have the same experience we had.

Does anyone else agree with me?

I guess it would depend on how the opponent makes it financially feasible for us. Are they going to pay for our room and board, since we do that for them when they come here??

I can't see too many of our fans making that trip though.

I think you would be very surprised. The Big Red Band took a lot of parents and fans to Washington, DC, three times and to Nashville, TN, when the band performed there. If you scheduled the game now to be played in 2011, it would give the fans and the band time to raise money.

Many of the Big Red kids never have the opportunity to leave Steubenville except to travel to football games. Going to an educational place like DC for a few days would be well worth the cost.
  • ManO'War
But why should we have to raise money to go play a football game when we pay for them to come here?? Maybe the contract could be worked where we don't pay for anything for their visit here, and then we could use that money

As you know though, the economic situation around here is not the best, so I doubt very many families could afford the trip no matter how much time you gave them.

I also think that they still have the Washington DC trip every year in the spring for one of the clubs, so there are Big Red kids getting to go to DC.

What game are you talking about? So far, I have heard rumors that Big Red is going to play Glenville, Brooke, Marlington, Warren Harding, Pittsburgh Catholic Central, and about a dozen other teams. Right now I don't believe any of it.

If you have some news, please share it with us.

That shoots down my theory that this year's schedule wouldn't be as tough as last year's schedule.

    I guess I was wrong!

Where is the game going to be-- Harding or Cleveland?

I'm just kidding, I have no idea....

Oh, you're a big help. I had already heard this rumor, so I believed you.

I just think you guys are way too into this for mid February so I felt like screwing with you.....

I would like to fly home this fall for a game, so I am interested in the schedule. I had made tentative plans to come home last year for the Massillon game and to bring my father with me, but he passed away in July. I didn't feel like making the trip by myself then.
  • FairwoodKing
We are either going to play another good team on the road this year or we may have eight home games. I would actually like to see us play Brooke in Wellsburg this season. Brooke would likely give us some computer points and it would be a money game. It would also, of course, be convenient for the Big Red fans.
  • ferflog
I have heard that Brooke will be on the schedule this coming season. Where the game will be played, I do not know.

All I know for sure is this:

    Week #1: Inkster (MI)
    Week #2: Akron Buchtel
    Some other week: Brooke (WV)

    ROLL RED ROLL!!!

I know you may want to visit Harding Stadium, but I recommend coming home for the Massillon game. That should be a great atmosphere and it's obvioulsy a great stadium. You'll definately get your money' worth if you fly home for that one.....

And saturday night he can take a walk in his old neighborhoods and see how much they have improved.;)

I'm definitely gearing up to see the Massillon/Ursuline games, and hopefully the Inkster game. Will depend on the Browns schedule as well. But, the Massillon/Ursuline games are most important.

That's not a bad idea. I haven't been in PBTS since I announced for the Big Red Band in the 1970's. I'll never forget the last time I was there. Instead of having me announce from the pressbox like they do in Harding Stadium, I had to stand just off the field with a microphone. As fate would have it, they parked me immediately next to the tiger cage. That tiger kept looking at me hungrily the whole time I was out there. I think those were the fastest announcements I ever made. I was happy to get away from there!

I was a freshman in the Big Red Band in 1962 when we went there and beat Massillon. Tony Violi, the band director, used a select band that night. We only marched 64 plus majorettes and he only used two of us freshmen. I think the band outdid the football team that night. When the game was over and we won, the band lined up in parade formation and marched around the field playing the Fight Song. It was a very exciting night. The next day the band had a tag day. We couldn't have picked a better time! People were throwing money at us. The whole town was really gung-ho. Even the Central people were very generous.

What great memories. My late father, John Carlton, saw nearly every Big Red game for 75 years. He even attended games when he was well into his 90's. He was actually the last living person to help build Harding Stadium in 1930. He told me all the details about that. I really miss him and his wonderful stories.
