Round 2: Orrville Red Riders 8-3 vs Elyria Catholic Panthers 10-1

  • OQB
Round 2, Let's get this started!

    Thoughts and Predictions!
  • AllOhio
Any speculation where this game might be played? My thoughts from tonight.... A playoff win is a playoff win! We'll take it. I'd still love to see Pierman used on the offensive side as a possession receiver more often. 6'5" receivers with good hands and some speed are very hard to come by in high school ball (not to mention very hard to defend as well). Keep rollin' Riders!
  • OQB
    Medina, Ashland, maybe akron

I agree All Ohio. We used him twice tonight: once on a trick play (Punt fake) and once on a crossing route that he caught. He caught two for two. Makes me want to throw it to him more. Its our formations that are not conducive to having a tight end. So what kind of team is EC? Running ( I hope) or passing team?
  • OQB
Spread passing attack......again! Lol we will be tested again.

That punt was a huge momentum swinger.
  • BRF
We will have our hands full for this one.
  • OQB
    Yes we will!!

Orrville's offense is well-rounded and athletic all over the field. Turner is a stud and needs to get the ball more. Brenner didn't show up much tonight (only 4 catches for 46 yards), but he adds a great compliment on the other side of the field. Then add Pirman into the mix, and they can be dangerous. Then the Illinois recruit out of the backfield next to their other RB cog Simpson. I thought we did a great job defending them tonight other than 2 big plays, but that's what they do... power it at you, then they have the ability to make that big play. Their defense is fast and can match up man-on-man with about any receiving corp as well as hit hard from any position. On special teams returns, they are dangerous.

On the other side, Elyria Catholic has been one of the favorites in this region all year, so they are definitely tough. From what I hear, their defense is loose and will give up points, but their offense can back them up and outscore opponents with a potent offense. Orrville can put up points, too. It could be a shootout! Whoever's defense executes better and keeps the other team under 25 would win.

Orrville, go in with intensity and a chip on your shoulder. Good luck!

Medina, Brunswick or Ashland. Those are my guesses.

Elyria D gives up 20+ per game, but their offense lights it up.

Danny Reaser might be just as good a QB as we've seen this year...including Marcus Fuller.

Three of their last 4 wins have been by 7 points or less.

High octane passing offense is not good for us. We have a weak link in the back field. That's not picking on anyone in particular because we've used multiple people. We just don't have that last great D -back that we need.

Agreed, I'm thinking Medina . EC had a battle like we did, as Huron stayed with them and from the WEOL 930 broadcast it sounded like they moved the ball but just couldn't put up points. EC had a 95 yard int return for a TD and missed a 30 yd fg that could have wrapped it up. EC had a late int to stop Huron. Listen to WEOL 930 am Sat morning from 9 to 11 for a wrapup show covering EC and other teams from that area. Why can't "sports country " do more shows like this or postgame stuff on Fridays?

    Good luck Red Riders
  • OQB
How big is their line? What kind of athletes do they have? How much do they run the ball...I know they pass a lot.

Heard their defense had 5 ints tonight against huron....one returned for 6.

Hope we can make smart decisions!!

ORRVILLE GOING TO HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL WITH THIS ONE . KEEP IT CLEAN AND GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE IN THE 4TH Q U BE OK
  • AllOhio
Minimize penalties, pressure QB and win turnover battle... whoever does this wins ballgame. We match up well with EC - both teams have athletes that fly to the ball. I'm sure our coaches will put together a great game plan with a few new added wrinkles. Our hard hitting capability can go a long way in this one! Just ask Genoa!

All we ever want here is an opportunity. We are fortunate enough to have another one this week. We have athletes who can play and so does EC. QB and receiver..I think 21 is deadly. They have others as well. One thing for sure. we are battle tested for a spread offense. We need to try and control the ball and limit their big plays. I would like to think we pose a couple problems for them as well.

Seems like the close games always come down to special teams. Triway misses PAT and fails to convert on 2 point attempts then gives up TD return by Turner. Triway returns a kickoff deep into rider territory and that leads to a Titan TD. Special teams play really does have a huge impact on game momentum. The Riders have struggled all year with the kickoffs. Kicks are not deep enough and the best players we have should be on the field to make tackles and maybe force a fumble. I have said all year that special teams are treated like a side show to the rest off the game when in reality they may be the most important part. Last year we win against Genoa in part because of missed PAT and then lose next week in part because of missed PAT. We need huge special teams performance against EC.
  • OQB
    Great post go riders!

If you go back and look at last night...it could of been a tie game....if coach Lee would've just kicked the extra points instead of going for 2 after they miss the first extra point. I wonder how he feels about that!
  • OQB
I know Elyria catholic played Elyria on STO this year....I watched a little bit of it. Does anyone know if it can be found in an archive on their site?

I also listened to their game against Cleveland central catholic....its hard to get a feel of this team....they can blow people out, but then win some close ones as well. It will be how our offense plays....

This should be a great game!

Surpisingly this was EC's first ever home game in the playoffs. Sounds like mud slowed them down and they will play better on turf, of course so should we with our speed. Here's link to game story http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/11/06/high-school-football-playoffs-mud-slows-offense-but-elyria-catholic-muddles-through/

    orrQB,
That game was on Fox Sports Ohio...dont think they archive the games. Their WR (#21) reminds me a lot of Sam Miller....can break the big one at any time. I'm guessing him and Stew will match up all night.

PS - Nathan Rosenbaum finished 27th at state cross country today. Ran 26 seconds faster than he did at regionals just last week. Congrats Rosey.
  • OQB
    Ok thanks RR1.
