Orrville Football - 2010

  • RedRider1
    riders1,
thanks.....it was right there in front of me. And I have reading glasses, but they dont seem to be helping. Blame 2 kids and a nicely developing case of ADD. :) Thanks again.

It's so hard to talk about "greatest Rider ever"...but Hourmard has to be on the list. Standout at the high school and college level, drafted and played in the CFL.

Have to define "great" first. Would Damian Vaughn qualify as a "great Red Rider?" To some, no....but he played in the NFL...something only a few Orrville alums can say.

Combine results were pretty impressive tonight for the Riders. I think we had 6 guys run under a 4.6 40. And they were all impact players..not just speedy guys putting on a jersey. I am talking about RB's, LB's, DB's. Good work young men! Good work coaches. Keep it up.

We play 7-7's for teaching and evaluating players in certain areas. We could care less what the "score" was. This scoring a 7-7 camp is just ridiculous. One example is at Akron you were allowed to hand the ball to a back one play! Huh! why! It is turning into a joke. WE have shown improvement each of the 7-7's I have seen. we have different guys in and out all the time so our coaches can see what they can do. Coach Davault could care less about keeping a "score" and didn't. Some of the teams we played against Friday would let their QB's stand back there for 5 seconds or more. With our Linebackers and DE's I can assure you that will NEVER happen on Friday night........not against us.

    ^^100% agree...as most would.

Scores in scrimmages are worthless for the most part....and even moreso in a 7-on-7. People get too hung up on scores in scrimmages.

If you don't get the Daily Record:
    By AARON DORKSEN

    Daily Record Sports Editor

ORRVILLE -- No transfer will draw as much attention in Wayne County as when a student-athlete trades in Blue and Gold for Red and Black, or vice versa.

Three-sport standout Stewart Turner Jr. has decided to make just such a move. He's transferred from Wooster to attend Orrville, where he'll be a junior this fall.

Turner made it official earlier this month and the wide receiver-defensive back has been participating in Orrville football workouts and practices since.

"They moved in right after the July 4th holiday and turned their enrollment papers in that Monday or Tuesday," Orrville football coach Doug Davault said.

"I called (Wooster coach) Mike (McCreary)," Davault added. "I felt bad about it because it wasn't anything we did. (McCreary) wasn't happy and I know I wouldn't have been happy either."

Turner, a 5-foot-10, 165-pounder, caught 20 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore last year. Wooster compiled a 5-5 record, including the school's fifth straight loss to the Orrville program he's now a part of.

The Riders are coming off a 9-4 season in which they advanced to a Div. IV regional runner-up finish.

Turner also lettered in basketball and track at Wooster. This past spring he had an area-best 22-2 1/4 long jump and ranked among the leaders in the 100-meter dash (11.0) and 200 (22.6).

After the Red Riders' completed their preseason strength and speed testing Monday night, Turner explained the decision as a combination of factors.

"We had been renting (in Wooster) and were told our house was going to be put up for sale and we'd have to move," he said. "My family and friends were looking and couldn't find anything in Wooster.

"My uncle had been trying to get me to go to Orrville for awhile and we found housing there, so the family just decided it was better for me to come here."

Turner, who paced Orrville with a 4.4 40-yard dash time in testing Monday, said some of his former WHS classmates took the news hard.

"I told a lot of them and a bunch of them were giving me crap," he said. "I'm moving on and I have a bunch of friends here to help me and push me."

Wooster's McCreary declined to comment on Turner's transfer.

Orrville has had several student-athletes transfer over from Wooster in recent years for various sports, including offensive lineman Kameron Barnes, who now plays football for West Liberty State. Others from Wayne County had been rumored to be thinking about transferring this summer.

"We had a number of kids who I heard were talking about going to Orrville over the summer," Davault said. "It's a touchy subject. The bottom line is it wasn't because of anything we did that (Turner) moved here. I don't want anyone to get the perception that Orrville is recruiting, or anything, because we never talked to him."

At the same time, Davault said that if someone wants to come to Orrville they don't want to discourage them.

"Things are different than when we were in school," Davault said. "You didn't buddy up with the guys you played against. Even at the pro level they do it, with guys like LeBron (James) and Dwyane Wade.

"We feel like a lot of good things are happening at Orrville academically, athletically and our facilities are some of the best in the area. From our class of 2010 we had eight kids sign national letters of intent -- four of them full rides. The combined GPA of those kids was 3.2."

Turner may prove to be that caliber of athlete, too, but it will be as a Red Rider now.

Week 10 just got more interesting!
  • BRF
I'll bet that was an icy phone conversation, "Generally" speaking! ;-)
  • thePITman
    LoL @ BRF.
I saw Turner with a few other Orrville kids at the Triway/Wooster 7-on-7 last night. He will be just fine wearing Red & Black. I'm sure nobody there cares that he used to play for Wooster, though. Haha!
  • CCRolly
I just got home from San Diego and just read the story so I'm trying to catch back up on this. Is it even believable the line in the Daily Record story where it said they couldn't fine "anything" in Wooster? Is that really possible?
  • THE4RINGZ
I agree CC apparently every house and apartment in our fair city is full.
  • thePITman
There are two houses just down the road from me for sale in the Triway school district, but "in" Wooster.
  • THE4RINGZ
My neighbor's house is for sale. There is a house two blocks from here for sale. There are places in Wooster for sale or rent. Do they seriously believe we might believe this story?
  • 5knots
Just because a place is for rent a for sale does not mean it fits into a families needs. Before we end up saying things that we shouldn't or speculate and end up offending/insulting someone unintentionally we shouldn't delve too much into the why? JMO.
  • thePITman
I was just doing some "recruiting" of my own, saying there were a few houses open around me. ;) I do feel bad for the housing situation the Turners faced in the Wooster school district, though.
  • THE4RINGZ
Ha Ha The truth shall set you free. Unless the truth hurts.
  • CCRolly
Would've loved to have heard that phone call between DeVault & McCreary though...
  • 5knots
Fortunately Davault and McCreary go back a ways as former teachers and maybe even coaches together in Wooster. I am sure there were awkward feelings both ways. Nuff of that though....If I am a General I use it as a great motivational tool and like I said week 10 emotions will be better than ever....maybe it is just what the doctor ordered for the woo faithful to get behind their program! What do you think CC?
  • CCRolly
Unfortunately, I don't see it helping Wooster get behind any team more. Community support for the Generals is dead over here. If it takes something like this to get the team fired up for Week 10....that's terrible. They should be fired up every year for Week 10 regardless.
  • thePITman
You know something's wrong with a school district when someone drives a truck around with a huge "Vote NO for the Schools" sign in the back of his white pickup truck and parks it in the middle of the school parking lot during a football 7-on-7 competition. The nerve! (License plate is BFN 8520, just as an FYI)
  • CCRolly
That's pretty terrible. Speaking of the 7-on-7...how did it go? Did Wooster look alright or no? I apologize to the Orrville huddlers for posting this question here....but there were "no available posts left in the Wooster thread." LOL...just joking around fella's....
  • rrfan
Well I want to welcome Turner to Orrville. I think that a Mr. Barnes was very happy he came here. I love it that people are wanting to come here and play. Our facilities are top notch and our coaches are too. I think we all know the fans are the best in the USA.

I don't even want to get into the debate of best player ever. That list of names up for debate would be long and very debatable. It is almost here I can't wait. Good luck Riders.
  • CCRolly
rrfan, wasn't that whole argument used by the Massillon fans when Zwick transferred out?

According to the article, Turner and his family looked for houses in Wooster as if they wanted to stay there. He was even playing for Wooster's basketball team in a shootout only two weeks before appearing in Orrville's football camp. It's not as if he just up and left Wooster 'cuz he wanted to play for the almighty Riders. *rolls eyes*

Dang, man. What's wrong with saying that? ....ahem...on our own thread! *rolls eyes back at ya*
