Agreed!Bruteye wrote: Honestly, I think it would be foolish to go away from the option at this point. It was by far our best play all season last year and everyone knew we were going to run it once every couple of downs. Especially since the personnel we have coming back (specifically Hackett, Lint and Blevins) had so much experience and success with that play. Once the seniors graduate we may not quite have the personnel to run it and then possibly go in a different direction. Also, we have run the option out of the I (along with numerous other formations) the past couple of years. -
27wackodogWhat! that option was 2/3 of the whole playbook for the past thirty years! I'm sure if we've hired the right coach he'll know what to do with the talent we have. Gavin grew up a bit this past season as a passer, I thought he threw fairly well as the year went on, but his option pitch would always scare the heck out of me, never knew where that sucker was going half the time!

1486wdi'm not suggesting we should go away from the option - many teams are not used to preparing for it and that in itself is an advantage. I was just commenting on what he said he had done previously.
-
onedawgpainWe have the talent to run the veer effectively also.
-
1486wdin some ways I like the veer type offense better(like navy, air force). But when you have fast smaller backs, the speed option may be a little more suited for us.
-
BruteyeWe ran several similar plays that navy ran (I didn't see many Air Force games this year so I am not sure about them). Of course the triple option was run by them, but the play that kept gaining big yards against osu last year was just a basic middle option where you are reading the DT and either giving to the fullback or keeping it. Either way it is going inside the Offensive Tackle. I do not believe this play can be run against all D fronts. It is usually more effective against 4 down linemen I think. I am not sure if that is what you were referring to as the veer. I think the veer is usually out of the pistol or a gun formation where the qb is reading the end and either giving to the back or pulling it and running away from the direction the back went. Dalton has run a similar play to this in the past as well (Hackett has run it the past two years and I believe that they ran it when Andrew Miller was qb as well).
-
1486wdyou are right bruteye - the veer is run out of the pistol or shotgun. Hackett can and has run this effectively. He is one of the better qb's with the ball in his hands that I have seen in quite awhile. Pretty hard to know where it is a lot of the time.
