Dalton's new Head Coach..Shawn Billker

  Dalton's Intermediate school principal, Doug Phillips, was head coach at Salem when Dalton's current Superintendent (Scott Beatty) was the Salem HS Principal, so they have worked together before. Phillips coached at a small school (Springfield Local) before Salem and had them in the playoffs a lot.
  
  I don't know if the district has any restrictions regarding administrators coaching, but keep an eye on that.

  Besides coaching at Northwest, Easterling was the head wrestling coach at Manchester for the past few years. I think he has coached football at Manchester before too.

  mompov - yea, those are all assistants. Yesterday's Independent listed the 8 finalists. FYI - It listed the four I mentioned above, plus dalton d coordinator Doty. The other three were Mansfield madison asst (and Dalton grad) Brian Baum, D Coordinator at Van Buren HS Andrew Amlin and Mike Trigg who is a coach at a school in Texas and spent some time as the head coach of an Arena league Team - don't know anything about that guy. Supposedly they are doing more interviews this week to try and get the list to 3 or 4 names to put before the selection committe. They want to have it wrapped up by early feb.

  have heard rumors about Phillips but like was said above, I think he is on the selection committee so he must be sticking to administrating for now. Panthers - do you have any opinions for Easterling as a coach?

  I liked him and thought he was a good coach. He worked very hard to build Manchester's wrestling program back to what it use to be in the 1990s.

  You can't have too many people who support wrestling at Dalton. The program needs some love from the administration. I think that would be a good thing.
  So Indorf didn't even apply? I saw the Inde article but were all 8 names listed?

  Having talked to some friends who played for Coach Easterling when he was a football assistant at Manchester, said he knew a lot about the game and was great to play for, I would guess a lot like what it was to wrestle for him. I wish him the best and hope he gets the chance to take over Dalton, I think you guys will won't regret it.

  intersting comment in Dorksen's column this morning in the DR where dalton's supt. mentions that there are some interested parties that did not actually apply due to their current employment and that they may interview those as well in addition to the known 8 finalists.

  Hopefully Indorf is one of those "interested parties".

  I know Indorf is interested...and 100% sure he's applied, but maybe they didn't list his name for other reasons (existing employer, etc.)
  
  I'd love to see JR Easterling given a serious shot. He's young, 30 or so I believe, but has had good experience at several programs (Northwest & Manchester). I think at one time last year he was coaching the freshman, assisting on JV and then receivers coach on Friday nights, he was busy.

  I believe that Indorf did apply, but did not get an interview and won't since he would fall under the "Some applicants you would have liked to have interviewed, but there is no available teaching position in their field. It is important to hire someone that is in the building on a day to day basis." as stated in the Daily Record/
  
  He teaches Science and it is a shame that they wont consider him.

  If Beatty (Superintendent) wants him they'll figure out a way.

  We need to hire a proven Head Coach, not an assistant unless you're talking Indorf. Let some other program take the assistants and train them for Head Coach.

  I am just curious, why does everyone think Indorf is the best choice for the job? I know him and he is a great guy, but that doesn't necessarily make him a great coach. If is it because he is at the college level then I can tell you all one thing, one of the finalist listed above (Brian Baum) was offered that job first and declined it then referred Buddah for the position. I am not disagreeing that he is a good coach and could be a fine head coach, but some of you act like he has the credentials of Pete Carroll.

  Pete Carrol, you make me laugh. Who gives a squat about 'ol Pete? Bring his name up on a HS thread. He will fall on his face again in the NFL.

  I just think Buddha's resume is great. National Championship rings, HS coaching experience, college coaching experience, and he's a Bulldog. Who could ask for more? Besides, he'd be an asset to Dalton's weight room program.

  Again One Dawg, you fail to answer why Indorff is the best man for the job. I said previously that I know Indorff. I was in high school at the same time as him. He played on some of the same teams as I. My brother was in his class and I watched every game they played. You make the claim that he is the only non-head coach that should be considered. Why? I am not looking for an argument. I am sure he would make a good coach, but to say he is hands down better than the finalists doesn't really make sense to me. To my knowledge, he hasn't even been a D or O coordinator in any of his positions (please correct me if I am wrong).
  
  One of my main concerns (aside from wins) is I want stability in the program. I believe Dalton's success over the years is due in part to the fact that there have been, I believe, only 4 head coaches going back to the start of Billie J.'s tenure. At this point, I have 3 sons, 2 nephews, and 2 cousins that will all likely go through this program in the next 15 or so years. I do not care who the coach is as long as his intentions are not to use Dalton as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. I am sure it is more likely that we could find that type of coach in someone from here, but it doesn't have to be that way.

  As much as I agree with you, I think we're all being unrealistic if we think any coach is going to stay long term at Dalton. As long as we're a small school we're going to be a stepping stone. Do you really think any of these guys would consider Dalton as the school where they'll retire from? Do you think Ram thought he'd put in 29 years at Dalton. Hell no. He tried to get the Wadsworth job in the late 80's. Our best hope for a long term guy is to get someone with ties to Dalton. Indorf, Baum, or whomever. I really don't care who it is as long as they show up hating Smithville.

  Dalton faces the same issues as any small school - they are viewed as a starting point. Why would a successful current head coach look to move? The only reasons would be to go to a bigger school or to their alma mater. You are not going to have lateral moves very often with a coach that has a proven track record. Dalton is a very desirable small school job, but the best chance of having someone stick around long term is hiring a Dalton grad. It is also possible that hiring an assistant from somewhere will like it and stay, but you never know. Just look around at small schools around the state - if the coach is not a graduate of that school and have some kind of ties to the district,chances are they will not stay there for thirty years - either looking for a higher profile job or going back to wherever they are from. At the same time, you have to hire who you feel is the best candidate at the time - you can't worry about whether they may or may not stay in the future as its all a guess. One benefit of making sure the new coach is a teacher in the district is that it could help with retention as it gets the coach more involved with the culture of the school.

  On a side note I was checking out some of the wcal schedules and saw that Hillsdale is playing Delphos St. John's in week 2.
