Dalton's new Head Coach..Shawn Billker

2DaHouseI for one think Horst and Miller would make very good linebackers. Question is are we deep enough on the line to replace them?
-
1486wdyea - horst is another option I forgot to mention at LB. Miller is a tough kid, but he was also probably our best pass-rusher last year so I can't really see him moving. I think they actually have more potential depth at LB than the d-line. Also whatever happened to that Wenger kid (soph I think?). I don't think he played last year and his brother Jeremy was an all ohioan a few years ago.

Horst at DE maybe? Miller hopefully will stay on the line, we need his experience and grit there. -
teamThe Wenger kid quit, and I don't blame him. 5'5 and 115 lbs. Not at all built like his brother. And a person that could be a two starter on the O and D line next year is Caleb Vacha. He really impressed the coaches and his teammates going 100% every play in practice last year and gave the Varsity a good look. And, he would probably be the second biggest guy on the line next year, with Tyler Burns being the only one bigger, unless Larry Miller can crack the starting 5. As for filling holes in the defense, we can't forget Hackett. He was a stud on the defensive side of the ball in Jr. High at D End. Not saying that is where he should play next year, but it is looking like we need all hands on deck on that side of the ball.

BruteyeLogan Forrer is another potential sarter on the line. He is big as a house and has another year under his belt. Last year he was still figuring things out due to him not playing as a soph. Hopefully he begins to understand his size advantage and learn to use it properly.
As for Chad Wenger, I saw him about a week ago and he is not 5'5" anymore. He had a big growth spurt this year and now stands almost as tall as his brother. I really think he could play if he decides to go out next year. -
1486wdi like vacha as well and he has a real good chance of playing as a soph. Forrer and Miller are other guys for sure that will be in the discussion. I saw Wenger at a bball game the other day which is what made me think of him - he is not that small at all (jeremy was not that big either). If he has any skills approaching his brother, that would help a lot. they will need him.
I was thinking about hackett as well - I seem him more as a OLB or safety. That being said, ram was always pretty cautious about playing qb's on defense unless it was absolutely necessary. When thinking back, the only qb's I remember playing D for dalton are Mark Jameson in the early 2000's and jason Miller in the early 90's (I was pretty young then, haha). Jameson's team was very deep, but he was just too good to keep off the field. There was probably a couple more instances but I can't recall them. That being said, it is not that rare for Qb's to go both ways in D5-6. For example, Brause did for Wynford this year. My guess is Hackett will not play over there, but I fully expect him to be in the two deep on that side of the ball. -
RedRider1nothing official...but hearing that Carr was the frontrunner as of this past weekend.

mompovThere are a some freshman who have potential. Jack Burke, Adam Metzger, Husted, are the first that come to mind. Addison Hoover is a big guy who played center who may help, too. Numbers wise there were about 20 8th graders on the team, but I know some are planning to play as freshman.
-
BruteyeI wouldn't be surprised if some of them do play as freshman. With only 12 players (going by last year's numbers) between them and the senior class, somebody is going to have to step up and play. It would be nice to see a full jv schedule this year as well. I hope that most of them decide to continue to play.
-
teamAndrew Miller played Qb and Cb a couple years ago, '05 and '06 if i recall corectly and Brad Withrich did some as well. But, i do not see us without Gavin on the defensive side of the ball this year. We are just not that deep. And i see him as a OLB or Db, which he played some last year. Forrer is one who could contribute on the line, on both sides, and needs to step up.

bleed_orange_and_blackThe decision has been made. Let's all congratulate Shawn Billker as Dalton's new football coach.

1486wdgreat to hear they made their choice - Hoover fans, what is Billker's background, etc?

More importantly. What kind of coach will he be? I know he coached the O & D lines at Hoover. Did the kids like him? What kind of offense and defense does Hoover run?1486wd wrote: great to hear they made their choice - Hoover fans, what is Billker's background, etc? -

Well I found out that the Dogs will keep the all black helmets. Can't till the season rolls around again! Go Dogs!bleed_orange_and_black wrote: The decision has been made. Let's all congratulate Shawn Billker as Dalton's new football coach.

THE4RINGZHere is a change I hope the new coach implements...have a chicken bbq or some other food type fund raiser prior to the annual Dlaton/Triway scrimmage in August. I am tired of having to get my pre-game meal at Wendy's that night.
Just a suggestion. -

DARN! I was hoping they would change it up a bit, maybe even go back to the orange helmets! -

I was hoping they'd change to something like Hoover has.dhs22p wrote:

dhs22pI was told by him that he wanted to keep the tradition of the black helmets. I was wanting to help design a possible logo but I'm cool with the all black helmets.
-
BruteyeAnyone know when he will be officially introduced to the team? Also, will Doty remain as the D coordinator?
-
1486wdI have always loved the all black helmets anyway. There's a cool old school look to it. When I was in jrhigh, we had three colors of helmets - white, orange and black. Some of the orange had stripes and some had bulldogs on the side - what a hodge-podge.
Bruteye - I haven't heard about any assistants but I would be very surprised if Doty continued to coach after not getting the job. -
BruteyeI know that the other assistants from last year were not planning on returning regardless of who got the job. This might make things a bit difficult for him to fill his staff. I do not think many other current Dalton teachers are seeking to coach and there are only so many people who are able to fit coaching around non-teaching jobs. I am not sure how many other coaches he knows that would be able to make it here for practices if they have to travel from other schools. I know Gregg Clark and Coach Harmon did it, but I believe their schools ended earlier in the day which made it easier to make it here on time.
-
1486wdbruteye, there is also a pretty good chance some of them may change their mind if asked by the new coach - most of those guys love football and my guess is that they want to be involved.
-
BruteyeI know almost for sure that Stutz will not. He is trying to finish his undergrad and needs to take some classes that semester which will make it difficult to coach. As for Peterman, I do not know. I would love to see him help because from what I have observed he is the ideal assistant coach. He knows and understands the game and does what he needs to do to help out the other coaches. Also, I think he is the main reason why the option has worked so well at Dalton for so long. I do not know if the new coach plans on running it, but we definitely have the personnel to do it. I do not know what Coach Harmon or Matt Shoup plan on doing.
-
1486wdi am also wondering about the offense - it is highly unlikely that he will utilize an option type attack, but no matter what they run, they will need to have at least some designed runs for hackett - he is too good of an athlete not to.
-
1486wdafter reading the articles this morning - it looks like we got a real quality guy here ready to go. Best of luck to him.
